Welcome to the first-ever TMAG Children’s Festival! For six days we are turning TMAG over to you, our younger visitors, with a range of special events, displays, programs and activities for and by children. Running with the themes of the popular Pattern Play exhibition, the TMAG Children’s Festival is all about patterns. All festival activities and events are free. Cover artwork by Julia Benyon, age 11. Julia is the winner of the TMAG Pattern Design Competition judged by the TMAG Children’s Reference Panel from many wonderful entries.

There are lots of activities for all ages happening throughout the festival that you can just show up to and enjoy.

All activities are drop-in sessions unless otherwise indicated. Suggestasaurus Tessellated Pavement Take the festival to the streets! Help fill the footpath with chalk patterns one paver at a time. Location: Dunn Place Footpath Tuesday – Sunday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Kids’ Voices Ever wondered what other kids think about TMAG? Listen to the Kids’ Voices audio guides to find out. Locations: Look for the telephones in the Central Gallery, ningina tunapri, Earth and Life, The Thylacine, Power of Change Tuesday – Sunday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Terrific Tessellations

Play a game of ‘Memory’ to discover the critically endangered spotted handfish and the other plants and animals that call the Derwent Estuary home.

Create amazing and complex patterns from a simple square. You will be amazed at what you can create!

Patterns from the Sea Book Spotters Pull-up a cushion and try your eye with an eclectic collection of ‘search and find’ picture books from the Hobart LINC. Will you spot the lot? Location: Chill-out Zone (Medals and Money) Tuesday 11:00 am – 2:00 pm

Get up close to the amazing patterned world beneath the waves. Create your own sea artwork to take home. Location: Earth and Life Friday 11:00 am – 2:00 pm

Hands-on Culture Pattern Paradigm

Join artist Selena de Carvalho to create an artwork that doubles as a mask you can wear!

Discover fascinating objects from Tasmanian Aboriginal Culture and learn about the history of a 40,000 year old people.

Teen Talks

Discover the collection with the people who see it most, TMAG’s wonderful Visitor Services Officers.

Take a special look at highlights of the TMAG collection through the eyes of young adults.

These tours are an outcome of an educational program run as part of the 2016 TMAG Children’s Festival. Location: Tour begins at the meeting point in the Central Gallery Tuesday – Sunday 11:00 am and 2:00 pm (approx. 20 minutes)

Story Time Settle back, listen to stories and let your mind wander in an imaginative pattern-filled world!

Tuesday and Wednesday – Find patterns and details in ceramics and learn about mosaics with Donna Ritchie. Location: Modern Age Thursday – Discover opposites and oddities from an upside-down world with Rebecca Robinson. Location: Bond Store Ground Friday – Design a beetle display with Laura E Kennedy. Location: Patterns in Nature Saturday and Sunday – Get a quick glimpse into what it would be like to have your portrait painted with Effie Pryer. Location: Dispossessions and Possessions

Energetic Afternoons Get your body moving with these high-energy participatory sessions. Appropriate footwear required, some activities may be weather dependent. Location: Courtyard Tuesday – Saturday 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm Tuesday – Jump Rope for Heart with Waimea Heights Primary School Wednesday – Hula Hoop Dancing Thursday – Drum Up Big Friday – Zumba! Saturday – Karate

Masquerade Disco Put on a mask and bring your family for a night of fun at the museum. Dance at the Masquerade Disco, hop on a bike in the pedal-powered Kinetic Cinema, experience the beautiful lights of Cellular Tessellation, and much more!

Friday

Festival Finale The final day of the festival will be a hive of activity, with lots to do across the museum including face painting, live music performances, and Social Circus in the Courtyard.

Food vans onsite for purchased meals. BYO picnics also welcome.

Open late until 8:30 pm, activities from 5:30 pm

Things to book for These free workshops have limited space, so make sure to book before you arrive. To book, go to www.tmag.tas.gov.au/ bookings/families Children must be accompanied by an adult for all booked workshops.

Circus Skills Try your hand at the wonderful world of circus. Try circus tricks including juggling and hula hooping… you might even build a human pyramid! Wednesday

pulawini patterns Join an artist from the Tasmanian Aboriginal community for an introduction to ochre. Learn how to paint with this special pigment.

Early Explorers TMAG is a great place for young children to explore and make discoveries. Join a TMAG educator in this fun, informal session including time spent trekking through the galleries. Wednesday – Saturday 10:00 am – 10:45 am Ages 3-5 (older/younger siblings welcome)

Pattern Printing with Penny Join local textile designer Penny Malone to print patterns onto fabric. Using stencils, colour and shape you will create a beetle tote bag to take home. Saturday 10:30 am – 12:00 pm (ages 5-7) 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm (ages 8-12)

TMAG Pattern Design Competition Exhibition Take a peek at some of the wonderful designs entered into the TMAG Pattern Design Competition, including the original winning work by Julia Benyon featured on the cover and throughout this program.

LEGO Display The Tasmanian Brick Enthusiasts will appear at TMAG with their displays of classic LEGO. Marvel in the miniature world of this classic construction toy. Location: Bond Store Basement Tuesday – Sunday 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
