Welcome to the 2017 TMAG Children’s Festival! This year the festival will explore all things ANIMAL. For five days TMAG turns itself over to you, our younger visitors, with a range of special events, displays, programs and activities for and by children. Make animal puppets with Trash Puppets, our Festival Artists in Residence, come party at the Kids’ Disco, meet people who work with animals every day, and much more.

Festival Opening Event

Cover artwork by Marley Pedersen, age 11. Marley is the winner of the TMAG Children’s Festival Animal Artwork Competition judged by the TMAG Children’s Reference Panel from many wonderful entries.

Things to show up to and do A great range of fun activities for all ages that you can drop-in to and enjoy.

Animal Stampede

Take the festival to the streets! Help fill the footpath with chalk animals. Location: Dunn Pla ce Footpath Wednesday – Sund ay 10:00 am – 4:0 0 pm

Print Ecology Art Station Explore the relationships humans and animals have with different types of plants. Using printing, drawing and collage, contribute to a collaborative artwork with artist Sara Wright.

Energetic Afternoons Get your body moving with these high-energy participatory sessions. Appropriate footwear required, some activities are weather dependent. Location: Courtyard Wednesday – Saturday 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

Wildlife Workers Chill-out Zone

Meet some amazing people who work with animals, and find out what their jobs involve.

Need a break from all of the Festival buzz? Visit the Chill-out Zone to read a book, play with shadow puppets, enjoy a board game, or just sit and relax.

Beetle Box

Discover some remarkable creatures that live under the sea. Create a miniature underwater scene using found objects to take home with you.

What’s so special about beetles, and why are there so many different sorts? Take a closer look, listen to a poem, and make a little beetle house to take back home.

Festival Finale

Millions of years ago the ancestors of whales walked the earth. Discover the evolutionary journey of whales.

The final day of the Festival is a hive of activity, with lots to do across the whole museum including face painting, live music, animal demonstrations, puppet performances and more. See daily schedule for full details.

Puppet Performance Workshop

Meet Katie Boon and Jhess Knight from Trash Puppets (VIC), our Festival Artists in Residence. They empower people of all ages to be creative using recycled and reusable materials. Drop in to the Puppet Studio and take inspiration from recycled materials to create your own trash puppet, write or draw your puppet’s story for The Trashy Tales of an Elusive Tail storybook, track the Tasmanian Devil puppet through the exhibits, and enjoy a performance by young workshop participants.

Winnie-the-Pooh and friends Get an insight into the creation of one of the world’s most loved children’s characters. A selection of original drawings by British artist Ernest Howard Shepard (1879-1976), including preliminary illustrations for the children’s classics Winnie-the-Pooh and Wind in the Willows. MONA 24 Carrot Garden Pop-up A veggie patch has sprouted at TMAG thanks to MONA’s 24 Carrot Garden Project. Visit to learn about this program and the role of beneficial insects in organic gardening.
