DESCRIPTION: The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) seeks applicants for a Gale Family Foundation Fellow to establish and maintain productive relationships with members of the 7 Ojibwe tribes and local Indian

communities, deepening the Society’s engagement within each of those communities. The incumbent serves as a representative of the Minnesota Historical Society to regional and national organizations, promoting respect and understanding for Native American people and their cultures, and may also act as a formal liaison to leaders, schools and institutions within Indian communities. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1) facilitate MNHS relationships with, and activities across, Minnesota’s Indian Communities. Work directly with the tribal governments, related and contributing organizations and businesses to establish mutually beneficial partnerships and enhance understanding and respect between MNHS and the Indian communities; 2) work closely with local and regional native and non-native communities to promote respect and understanding for Ojibwe people. Work directly with individuals and groups in the Indian communities to enhance understanding and respect between MNHS and those individuals and groups; and 3) work closely with the MNHS Indian Affairs Council and Minnesota Indian Affairs Council to help represent the interests, activities and future directions of the MNHS. Work closely with Native American organizations to help represent the interests, activities and future directions of the MNHS. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Obtained a Master’s or Doctoral degree within the previous three years of appointment.  Knowledge of the various Tribal affiliations and entities with Minnesota and surrounding areas.  Two to three years of community engagement or outreach to American Indian communities.  Knowledge of Ojibwe and Dakota languages.  Understanding and appreciation for the values of the Ojibwe and Dakota people in terms of their traditions, relationships, arts and crafts, and their background and history.  Ability to work diplomatically with a large number of individuals, organizations, and tribal functionaries across Minnesota’s Indian communities.  Demonstrated ability to conduct historical or humanities research and to supervise the research work of others.  Strong oral communications skills, including lecturing and teaching.  Strong written communication skills.  Strong organizational skills. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Knowledge of state departments and other local, county and federal agencies of relevance to American Indian communities.  Existing relationships or work history with principal American Indian Tribes located within Minnesota.  Ability to coach and mentor diverse youth and nurture positive interaction among students.

 

General knowledge of Minnesota history and the history of the principal racial, ethnic and cultural groups within the state. Familiarity with the various divisions, departments and programs of the Minnesota Historical Society.
