Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Tommy Flynn graduated from the Art Institute of Boston in 1976 and moved to Manhattan later that year to begin a career as an advertising photographer, specializing in still life. Inspired early on by the work of Edward Weston and Irving Penn, he now counts American Express, Coca-Cola, Mercedes Benz, Nike, Time Life and Warner Brothers among his commercial clients. Running along a parallel path to this business world of photography, has been Tommy’s continuing efforts to create his fine art images. The most recent project, “Sliced Open”, spotlights a series of sophisticated, sublime, and often otherworldly close-ups of various fruits and vegetables. From the delicate starburst pattern at the center of a watermelon radish, to the clean lines and contrasts of a mushroom, the strange gelatinous glow of a passion fruit, or the deep galaxy-like spiral of a red cabbage, this series discovers the mysterious and beautiful, even within a commonplace piece of fruit or a vegetable. “Every slice unveils a vivid image rich in color and texture, capturing my passion for discovering the natural essence to be found in each unique subject”.
