Welcome to Bears Junior Carnival 2017 A message from our president It is with great pride that I welcome everyone to our 2017 Toowoomba Bears Junior Rugby Carnival. Again we are fortunate to host our carnival in the beautiful grounds of the historic, yet ever vibrant, Downlands College and we remain extremely grateful. The Toowoomba Bears Rugby Club’s history is shared with the foundation of the sport of rugby in Queensland with the Darling Downs boasting some of Australia’s greatest Rugby players. Our club throughout its history consolidated The Mater Dei Catholic Primary School Junior Rugby and Senior Rugby from Toowoomba Past Grammar and today boasts members from a vast array of schools and back grounds, all proudly playing for their hometown club – The Bears. This inclusive Bears culture we wish to extend to all clubs today. To all boys and girls who step foot on the hallowed pitches of Downlands College today and dream of one day setting foot on the turf of international rugby, I strongly encourage you to believe that anything is possible. I would like to thank our referees, our ground staff and all the unsung heroes that make these events possible for our children. On behalf of the Bears Family we wish everyone a safe and enjoyable day, and that all matches are played and supported in the true spirit of our beloved game. Yours in the love of rugby, Tim Burgess • Field marshals provided by the bears

The Spirit of the Game He has a heart as big as Phar Lap with a double dose of “Try”, There’s vision and there’s insight in his bright and fiery eye, He is the strong words softly spoken, that ignites the very soul, A product of his parents, a nation’s son, Australian gold. He prefers reflective silence now, when there’s nothing more to say And with the Spirit of an ANZAC, he then leads them to the fray, When the odds are stacked against them, with the opposition’s size He first, seeks out the biggest fear, and stares it in the eye She’s a diamond under pressure, with the reflex of a Bear, The perspective of the wedge-tail, fully focused and aware. A blue heeler in the scrummage, a kelpie round the back, Kokoda in the defence line, Beersheba in attack. And amidst the heated battle, from a muddy bloody haze, With the spirit of Ned Kelly, he comes out both guns ablaze. The classic Australian pedigree, with an outcross, mongrel streak, A touch of timor pony, three-parts thoroughbred at least. With pendulum against them, another unjust penalty, With a cheeky grin, he’ll adjust his chin and thank the referee. Her confidence is contagious, and their pride begins to swell, For you’re never done and dusted, ‘til they sound that final bell. With a bullock teams endurance, across the black soil plains, They forge the line for one last time, like persistent July rain. They’re all in this together, true mates, true blue, true grit, And amidst the cheers, blood, sweat and tears, there is no such word as quit. For sure, some tried, to throw in the towel, but he reached in and threw it out, He’s the last one off the paddock and the first to buy the shout. A gentleman in the ranks, for a lady, sure to stand, chivalry and Integrity are the backbone of the man. At the going down of the sun, and at the dawning of the day, The colours of their jersey are always on display. Life is just a game they say, but it can test your strength to bear, It can be tough and hard and can leave you scarred, and it isn’t always fair.
• Tackling commences in u8’s, no tackling in u6’s or u7’s.
And the way that you have played the game, is your only true legacy,
• Full catering available, including canteen, chip vans and fresh coffee for breakfast, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea. EFTPOS is available for cash out only - not purchases.
For when that final whistle sounds, your colours are all the same,
• Please do not park on the college side in Kate street. Plenty of parking is available on both sides and around the college.
So shake your opposing numbers hand, and thank the referee. Make sure your time on the pitch was played, in the Spirit of the Game. Written by Bow Creek.
From under 6’s to under 12’s - we would love to have you on board! The Junior Bears Spirit is all about fun, fitness, family and friendship. Boys and girls are encouraged to play and confidence is built alongside skill. /ToowoombaBearsJuniorRugby | www.toowoombabears.com.au |
