From the Principal Dear fellow alumni and the entire La Salle family, Greetings from La Salle! In an article entitled Responding to the Call of the Spirit, David L. Hotek wrote “The story of De La Salle provides us a place where we come to meet ourselves and each other and thus it becomes a place of empowerment. This empowerment comes from the Spirit of God Himself, calling us to life in its fullness and to the service of others. In short, the story of De La Salle, brought to life within us by the Holy Spirit, provides us with a means of responding to our Christian vocation, of accepting the responsibility of our shared ministry in the Church.” Our faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit, and we are called to respond to it. Our faculty and staff continually answer this call. They value the responsibility entrusted to their care of working in partnership with parents to teach our Lancers both the rigors of a phenomenal academic program and the gospel values and teachings of our faith. And our students respond. “We are … called to serve!” is a motto being lived by our Lancers and the whole La Salle community. This call to give service is not simply a catchphrase of words; rather, it is a directional force and a steady reminder of our belief as Lasallians to put our Catholic faith into action. This happens constantly through our daily interactions and whenever our Lasallian community reaches out through special causes and collections in response of Christ’s message to serve the needs of others. Our Lancers truly learn that a gift they share is one which keeps on giving. To you, the alumni of La Salle and the numerous benefactors, parents and friends of our school who provide ongoing testimonial acceptance of your willingness to share in the responsibility of making a positive difference in the lives of our students, I thank you for your gifts of time, efforts, words of support, and financial generosity. Please continue to assist as much as you can, to look for ways of further answering the call to share in our ministry for our Lancers, and to spread the gift of our story with others, especially prospective future Lancers and their families who will seek to experience both the legacy of our La Salle traditions and the enormous opportunities which await them. May God bless you and your families, and may Jesus live in our hearts forever! Forever, know that I care . . .

Thomas Luebbe ’73 Principal of La Salle “A Catholic high school in the Lasallian tradition . . . . . . a home of Strong Hearts, Strong Minds, and Strong Leaders!”

A Catholic Education at La Salle

A faith-filled message from Michael Deyhle, Salutatorian By Sharon Folzenlogen We have all had the privilege to listen to young speakers at other high school graduation ceremonies express their gratitude to family, friends, members of the board of education and the community for their successful high school careers. In that public forum, they are not allowed to share the personal impact of their faith or their God. At the La Salle High School Baccalaureate Mass, just the opposite is true. On May 26, 2008, Michael Deyhle’s salutatorian address to his fellow graduates acknowledged the influence of family and friends during his high school education. But his third point, and one well made, was the impact of a Catholic education on each graduate.

The Catholic education at La Salle High School has allowed us to create an extensive relationship with God while receiving unrivaled education and future preparation. La Salle High School’s teachers and faculty have challenged each individual in mind, body, and spirit to become the best version of himself. Through these challenges and through the unparalleled resources made available to us, La Salle fostered the growth of the morals and innate skills that make us unique, thus giving us the tools to create a better world than that into which we were born. La Salle High School has allowed us to create lasting friendships with teachers and staff who have become mentors throughout our tenure in high school. A Catholic education has also allowed us to give back to those who have promoted our success. Students are enabled to give back to the community through Christian service hours and to their parents through scholarship money and job skills...”

“We are fully aware that every day is a gift from God…” (An excerpt from Michael Deyhle’s salutatorian address.)

Michael’s Kairos Retreat had the most impact on him in the four years at La Salle. “This retreat was important to me because of the unity it built between fellow classmates and myself,” Michael reflects, “in addition to the newfound appreciation I discovered for my family and friends.” Michael will attend the University of Dayton majoring in biology. He hopes to one day enter the field of medicine so that “I can help people improve their health and well being while doing something I love.” Michael earned eight scholarships and grants including the President’s Merit Scholarship and an athletic scholarship to the University of Dayton.

“So now let us conclude our time at La Salle as it began - in prayer,” said Timothy Moeller at the end of his valedictorian address. 4 Lancer Newsletter

Making the Best Choice

The Moellers achieve exceptional results with studious preparation! By Sharon Folzenlogen Educating six sons with a Catholic education is the awesome responsibility of Paul and Mary Ellen Moeller. The Moeller formula for success is to educate themselves about their sons’ education. They carefully study their choices and make informed decisions. “La Salle’s personal touch and sincere desire to welcome our sons to the school at the Open House,” explained Mary Ellen, “is unmatched.” Before Daniel committed to La Salle, Paul talked to a young neighbor about his experience as a Lancer. The Moeller boys also took advantage of the Shadowing Day at La Salle. After taking the admission tests at La Salle, Daniel ’06 and Tim ’08 were offered academic scholarships and Ben ’11 earned the De La Salle Scholarship. Mary Ellen appreciates the fact that La Salle notifies parents of the results personally. They enjoy the Admissions with Distinction Banquet held for the incoming freshmen scholarship recipients each year. Mary Ellen says that La Salle’s Honors Program is the best. With 25 students in a class, the teachers get to know the students, and the students motivate each other. She knows her sons are well-prepared by excellent teachers who know their students well. Letters of recommendations reflect this relationship. By participating in the PSEOP program with Xavier University, their sons earn college credits, saving future tuition dollars, and exposing them to the college classroom experience. She applauds the extensive range of Advanced Placement classes offered at La Salle. Tim says that La Salle’s math and science courses especially AP Calculus and AP Physics influenced his choice of engineering as his college major. At Notre Dame, Tim looks forward to being part of the Engineering Honors Program and the opportunity to participate in research as an undergraduate. Daniel, valedictorian of the Class of 2006, is now a junior at Notre Dame majoring in Honors Mathematics and looking forward to attending graduate school. “My Lasallian education has certainly prepared me for the academic challenges at Notre Dame.” Daniel attributes his service hours at La Salle as preparation for his continued participation in service activities at Notre Dame. His career goals now are either in the business field or teaching at the college level. The Moeller family understands the formula for success is in the preparation. This excerpt from Tim’s valedictorian speech to his classmates at the Baccalaureate Mass, May 26, 2008, wisely expresses that same concept to his fellow graduates. “But today is not about the past; it is about the future. Hereafter, our paths will diverge; yet each of us is prepared for the unique direction his life will take. The knowledge we have gained,

2008 Valedictorian Timothy Moeller, Principal Tom Luebbe and Daniel Moeller, Class of 2006 the faith and morals we have developed, and the friends we have made, are of tremendous value. Although many difficulties will await us along life’s journey, as long as we remember these things and make good decisions, we will be successful.” Tim earned 10 scholarships and grants including the Notre Dame University Scholarship and the Greater Cincinnati Notre Dame Club Scholarship. Tim is a National Merit Scholar. Daniel earned 22 scholarships and grants including the University of Notre Dame Scholarship and the Alumni Club Scholarship for the University of Notre Dame. Daniel was a National Merit Finalist. Paul Moeller is an accountant at Silco Fire Protection, a University of Cincinnati graduate and a St. Xavier High School alumnus. Mary Ellen Moeller earned her undergraduate degree in engineering from the University of Dayton and holds a master’s degree in computer engineering from the University of Cincinnati. Helping Hands The Holy Spirit has filled our hearts with the joy of giving to others. Bob ’66 and Nancy Willke

The Helping Hands Health and Wellness Clinic was started in August 2006 when Nancy Willke and Joyce, a social worker and campus manager of their church, felt a calling to do outreach with the changing neighborhood around the church. Nancy is a registered nurse and understands the needs of the community who do not have health insurance. “Our faith in Jesus taught us to be His hands and feet to help those in need.” Nine months after this revelation, the Helping Hands Health and Wellness Center opened its doors to those in need of medical assistance. Pastoral, social, dental health, and vision services, as well as diabetic, hypertension, and special needs education are all available at the clinic. Because it is a faith-based clinic, prayer is offered with each patient. There is a large, devoted staff of volunteers who are always willing to help the patients. Dr. Riza Conroy, a family physician, donates her time two Friday evenings each month. The administrator secures funds to run the clinic which operates solely on donations, coordinates the activities of the clinic, and is a very important part of the team that keeps the clinic on an even keel.

“I feel that the Christian atmosphere that permeated my experience at La Salle is something ingrained in me that will last a lifetime,” Bob Willke explains.  “When I see firsthand the people that our clinic serves, that Christian upbringing comes to the forefront.” Nancy is the nursing coordinator, but her favorite part of the clinic is to instruct and pray with the patients. Bob volunteers his skills as treasurer of the Helping Hands clinic. “It is very gratifying to see faces of people who are being helped by the clinic who normally would go without any type of health care.”

Nancy and Bob Willke begin their 2008 summer adventure traveling Route 66 in their Mustang convertible. Bob Willke, La Salle class of 1966, continued his post-secondary education at The University of Dayton. He spent most of his career in the food industry at The Kroger and Colgate Palmolive companies, and he is now at AFLAC selling supplemental insurance. Nancy Willke is a 1967 graduate of the Walther Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago. She worked as a registered nurse until 1975 then stayed home to raise their two children, Kara and Todd. She returned to the work force in 1990 as a surgical nurse and still works in that capacity at an outpatient surgery center in Columbus. Nancy and Bob have been married for almost 35 great years, all in Columbus. Their daughter, Kara, is married and has two young sons. They live in Westerville, Ohio. Todd resides in Cincinnati and is engaged to be married this September.

Ray and Debbie Doth Class of 1965

Ray Doth enjoys working with people, and he says, “The people at La Salle are great to work with.” As a student and an alumnus, La Salle motivated him to do well and succeed. “La Salle High School was a great place to learn and it prepared me for a successful career at Intrieve.” Ray currently serves on the Advancement Board and Sports Stag Committee and has been a member of the Stadium, Marketing and Field Renovation committees. He was inducted into the Hall of Achievement in 2003 and has shared his professional expertise as a presenter at Career Day. “My hope is that if the students witness the joy I receive from my involvement at La Salle, they may be inspired to do the same in their adult lives.” “Both Debbie and I are flattered and at the same time dumbfounded by this honor. She has always supported all the activities that I have been involved with at La Salle for over the past 40 years,” says Ray. “We give what we can in time and energy along with professional and financial support.” Now in retirement he is enjoying the time he spends with Debbie and his daughters and their families at home and on vacation. Ray ’65 and Debbie Doth, their three daughters Donna, Michelle and Nichole, their spouses, and nine grandchildren. Ray retired after 30 years at Intrieve, Inc.

Art and Rita Hudepohl Art started Hudepohl Construction in 1959 with his brother. He became the sole owner in 1980 until his retirement this year. The company is now run by his two sons, Chris and Steve. He was a leader in the construction of Lancer Stadium in 1990. He remembers working alongside a core group of fellow parents who said, “This can be done.” For over a year, he worked evenings and weekends along with his sons to help build Lancer Stadium. “It required a lot of time, but I had a lot of fun.” In 2006, Art was again instrumental in the renovation of Lancer Stadium with the new turf project. While his sons were students at La Salle, Art served on the Board of Trustees from 1984 to 1990. Both he and Rita worked for many years at the La Salle bingo to generate much needed dollars for the co-curricular programs. The expertise and skills that Art Hudepohl has given to La Salle over the years is immeasurable. All of his work has been done quietly and humbly. He remarks, “This is an honor to be inducted into the De La Salle Society that I don’t feel like I deserve.” He feels that the satisfaction from seeing his handiwork take shape and knowing that it makes a difference in the lives of La Salle students is reward enough. Art and Rita Hudepohl, sons Chris ’86 and Steve ’89, daughters Karen Dangel ’87 and Annie Wingert ’93(McAuley), their spouses, and 11 grandchildren.

Dr. Robert & Felicia Burger Class of 1977

Drew and JoEllen Nieman Class of 1965

A visionary sees what’s ahead and does something about it. It starts businesses. It grows families. Drew and JoEllen founded Drew Nieman Plumbing in 1974 while starting their family. La Salle’s vision for the future has always relied on talented, skilled professionals like Drew Nieman. That is the contribution that he brought to the building of Lancer Stadium in 1990, the field turf renovation in 2006, and so many other building projects that Nieman Plumbing has supported in the larger community.

La Salle High School has been an important part of the Burger family for the past 35 years. Bob’s parents, Bob and Marilyn, have nurtured their sons and daughters, their spouses and all the grandchildren with their presence, prayers and support. As his role models did for him, Bob continues the Burger legacy here at La Salle. He says, “I give back to La Salle because La Salle gave so much to me during such an important time in my life.” As a student and athlete, he earned a National Merit Scholarship to attend the University of Notre Dame where he was a member of the 1977 Irish football team that won the National Championship. They also went on to play in the 1980 Sugar Bowl. Bob now specializes in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine and is president of Beacon Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. He and Felicia have volunteered their energy and expertise in countless ways at La Salle. Bob has been the team physician since 1991, a member of the Principal’s Advisory Board since 1999, chairman of the La Salle High School Science and Development Foundation, the Academic Advisory Board, and the Spirituality and Lasallian Mission subcommittee of that board. Felicia, holds a master’s degree in nursing from Purdue University of Indianapolis, and is a nurse practitioner. She is a constant volunteer in the Spirit Shop and serves on the Camelot Auction Committee. Bob was named to the 2006 Academic All-Star Hall of Fame, and sits on the Board of Directors for Right to Life and the Board of the Cincinnati Chapter of the National Football Foundation. Bob explains, “I choose to have a close relationship with the La Salle community because their mission to serve and to value the uniqueness of each individual is so genuine and deep-rooted. This is an honor to be inducted into the De La Salle Society.” Dr. Robert ’77 and Felicia Burger, sons Bobby ’06, Christopher ’08, John ’11, and Joe ’12

In 1990, Drew received the Signum Fidei Award at La Salle and in 1993 he was awarded the John Bosse Alumni Service Award. In 2005, the Nieman family and Nieman Plumbing was chosen as a finalist in the Innovation Category by the Goering Center for Family Business. In acknowledging his induction into the De La Salle Society, Drew says, “It is nice to be appreciated, but I never did it for the rewards. A Catholic education is very important to our family and that is the reason JoEllen and I support La Salle.” Today, Nieman Plumbing is looking ahead. Drew and JoEllen, along with A.J. and Brian, are redirecting the company’s focus on the specialty service work they can provide for their suppliers. Drew and JoEllen are now enjoying the fruits of their labor with their families here and at their homes in Naples, Florida, and on Lake Cumberland. Advancement Perspective

Annual Fund Impacting a Lasallian Education Dear alumni, parents and friends, It is with sincere appreciation that we acknowledge in this issue of the Lancer, the generous support of our alumni, parents and friends who invested in La Salle High School during 2007. The 2007 Annual Fund surpassed our initial goal of $350,000.00 raising $417,512.00 for the Scholarship and Financial Aid Programs. Your assistance has helped us to meet the many financial demands necessary to operate our fine institution. Parents make considerable sacrifices in order to send their sons to La Salle and, through your kindness and generosity, many families are able to afford this excellent opportunity for their children. You are important to us, so we have made every effort in this Investors Report to insure proper listing of names. Despite this, errors may occur. If your name has been omitted or improperly listed, please accept our apology and note the error to me. We have initiated our 2008 Annual Fund with a goal of $450,000.00. If your name does not appear in this issue, please consider supporting us in 2008. Your gift will make a difference

in helping students who are seeking a Catholic education. I invite each of you to stop by and visit with our students and faculty. If you have not been to La Salle’s campus in a few years, you will be pleasantly surprised at some of the outstanding changes we have made to our physical plant and curriculum. I want you to know how much we appreciate your generosity and the positive impact it has had on the Lasallian education. I ask that you continue your support as advocates for La Salle. Thank you for your investment in La Salle High School.

LANCER

First Lancer to Win Both Shot Put and Discus State Titles You have to feel great about the season... Coach Frank Russo The La Salle Track Team accomplished all its goals this season and then some. The Lancers won the GCL, District, and Regional championships and competed for the State title. Chandler Burden became the first athlete in the city of Cincinnati to win both the shot and discus in the state finals. DeVier Posey became the first athlete in the city of Cincinnati to win the 100, 200 and 400 meter dash in the Regional Championship and then qualified to the finals in the state championship in all three events.

La Salle became the first high school in the city to qualify two athletes to the finals in the 100 meter dash. It’s been 14 years since the Lancer track team has been crowned Regional Champions and has been on the State Podium. “We had a remarkable run at the state title,” says Coach Frank Russo. “Our guys competed from beginning to end. Most people didn’t give us a chance going into the meet, but our guys had one goal in mind and they never compromised or let up. You have to feel great about the season, and the championship run we made.”

Avery is a graduate of national wrestling powerhouse, St. Paris Graham High School. Graham has won eight straight state titles and was recently crowned the 2008 National High School Champions. As a competitor, Avery was a two-time State Placer, a State Champion and an All-American at Graham. He is a graduate of Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania where he was a twotime NCAA Division I National Qualifier. After graduation, Avery coached at Graham for five years and, during his tenure, the team won the Division II State Championship each year. For the The First Annual Father Chuck Golf Memorial will take place Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown, Ohio. This year’s event will be a four-person scramble with a shotgun start scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Proceeds from the outing will be given back to the students in the schools he served in the form of tuition assistance. The high schools include La Salle, McAuley, Alter, Fenwick, and St. Xavier.

past two years, he has been the head coach at Springboro High School. This summer, Avery hosted Open Mat nights in the De La Salle Center. He is already implementing a new upgraded schedule, recruiting new staff and increasing participation to fill all-weight classes. He hopes to finish in the top 10 in each tournament and send wrestlers to district and state competitions. He will encourage the wrestlers to maintain high GPA’s especially during the season. As these goals are met, Mr. Zerkle hopes Lancer wrestlers will become GCL, district and even state champions. As a student and coach at Graham High School, he enjoyed national recognition. He wants that for La Salle, too.

Baseball Team Wins Sectional Championship The 2008 Lancer Baseball Team won another sectional championship this year by defeating Elder in an exciting game at Western Hills. Aaron Walter won the game on the mound. The offense was led by the bat of sophomore Jake Meister. “Jake hit a three-run homer that gave us a nice little cushion,” says Coach O’Conner. “We were able to add to our lead when Terrell Jones drove in Reid Rizzo with a double in the last inning.” This year’s success started and ended with the strong performance of the pitching staff. The team had an excellent 2.17 team ERA. Leading the way was All-League and AllCity pitcher Aaron Walter. Aaron, who is now

in La Salle’s record book for IP, ERA, and wins, was the team’s Most Valuable Pitcher for the second straight year. He ended the regular season with a .91 ERA. “He was tremendous all year long. He beat both Moeller and Elder twice. The team really rallied around Walts when he threw.” The team recorded another 20-win season, the second in four years. They all worked hard under the strong leadership of the seniors. With seven starters returning to the team in 2009, Coach O’Connor plans to advance to the district finals and beyond next year.

The Class of 2008 will be well-represented at the following colleges by 15 outstanding athletes in their respective sport. INAUGURAL

Golf Outing Raises $42,500

MONDAY, JUNE 16, 2008

MIAMI VIEW GOLF CLUB MIAMITOWN, OHIO

The inaugural Bob Krueger Invitational was held Monday, June 16, 2008 at Miami View Golf Club. Bob is most appreciative of all the preparation and leadership that the planning committee did under the direction of Tom Binzer ’75 and Matt Dierkers ’91. The committee of over 25 family members, friends, and La Salle alumni worked together in harmony to establish this first annual golf outing. Bob Krueger believes that God has a plan for all of us. From his early leadership role as senior class president at Purcell High School in 1950, through decades as a coach and dean of discipline at La Salle, to a lifetime of parenting and being a grandparent, Bob says, “All I ever wanted to do in my life was to bring people together with a common goal.” Nearly 180 golfers participated in the event. A highlight of the event was the assistance of over 60 La Salle students on the course during the day. “The day will be remembered for the great weather, wonderful people and fun atmosphere,” explains Matt Dierkers. “The comprehensive approach by the committee to address the needs of the golfers was very successful.” In total, the Bob Krueger Invitational Golf Outing raised $42,500 to benefit the Bob Krueger Endowment Fund. This fund provides scholarships to deserving students and families that have invested in Catholic education during grade school and have a financial need to attend La Salle.

“I am so excited and enthusiastic about this event,” Bob exclaims. “I feel like a little kid again, filled with awe and appreciation. Thank you.”

Plan now to attend next year’s golf outing.
