COUNTDOWN to camp Camp Season is just around the corner! First time at camp? Find out what to pack and how to best prepare your kids for this fun and exciting adventure!

1. Review the list of activities and events to help your child understand anything he or she is unsure about. Show enthusiasm for all the fun things they’ll be doing and all of the new friends they will make.

2. Review the camp rules so that your child fully understands their responsibilities while they attend camp.

3. Set the tone for a positive camp experience by sharing your own memories of Summer camp and focusing on all the wonderful new experiences your child is about to have.

4. Try some of the activities ahead of time. If your child has never gone rock climbing, take him out yourself so he can experience it before camp, building his confidence. Some camps offer pre-season activities or a weekend stint for future campers so register your child.

5. Look up camp songs together and teach her some lyrics so she will be ready for campfire sing-a-longs. 6. Pack a special surprise in your child’s luggage: this could be a small gift, a family photo, a new book to read, or a letter you’ve written to them.

7. Check the camp’s packing list. Most camps will provide a packing list of suggested items for that particular camp. Make sure to include comfortable clothing that your child won’t mind getting dirty and sturdy footwear. Don’t forget any medication with dosage instructions.

8. Label belongings! Prevent lost or mixed-up belongings by labeling all clothes and equipment with personalized stick-on labels. Keep a packing list of all items to make sure you haven’t left anything behind at the camp.

9. Leave expensive items at home. It’s best not to bring any expensive video game consoles that can get lost, stolen or broken. Avoid packing any money or jewellery. And don't forget to send your child off with lots of excitement!

Taming Summer Camp Anxiety Is your child anxious about the attending camp this Summer? Camp should be a fun and thrilling experience for all kids. Before signing up for camp, talk to your child about it!

1. Let your child ‘own’ the camp the experience. Involve them in choosing a Summer camp, introduce them to the camp environment (arrange a visit), and familiarize them with the camp activities.

2. Help your child get excited about camp! Take them shopping for new gear and clothes, and have them focus on the fun aspects.

3. Stay calm and positive and avoid focusing on what makes your child anxious. Instead of asking: “Are you nervous about meeting new friends?” ask: “How are you feeling about meeting new camping mates?”

4. Practice shorter separations. If your child is apprehensive about being away, it makes sense to work your way up to longer separations. Go through “rehearsals” such as a shorter-term sleepover at Grandma’s or a friend’s house.

5. Don’t belittle their concerns or offer convincing reassurances. Avoid saying, “There’s nothing to worry about!” or, “Everyone loves camp!” This may actually discourage your child.

6. Don’t “hang around at the bus stop” on departure day. Keep goodbyes short, as delaying just causes more mixed feelings.

7. Make sure communication is easy and accessible. Pack envelopes and stamps, outline a schedule for phone calls, emails, and skyping (if allowed).

8. Prepare for each letter or conversation so your child will come away focused on how they are adjusting, rather than on how much they want to come home.

9. Try not to communicate your own anxiety. Your child can pick up on your feelings even if you don’t verbalize them.

10. Let your child take a piece of “home” with them. Send familiar objects with them, such as a favourite stuffed animal, toy, book, and a small picture of the family. Remember that the cost of a good camp covers more than the activities. It includes a team of professionals and counselors committed to fostering social learning in your child. They are there to ensure their well-being, safety, and happiness.
