Marshall Township Parks & Recreation Creating Community through People, Parks & Programs

As winter continues to bring us freezing temperatures and lots of snow, spring planning is well on it’s way in the Parks and Recreation Department here at Marshall Township. Last year was a very productive year. There were new lights, fans and picnic tables installed in the Elias Fry Barn, as well as a newly paved driveway. The Warrendale Park basketball court had new backboard and nets installed. Construction continued on the Brush Creek Trail. Pickle Ball lines were painted on one tennis court in Warrendale. Thank you to Mike Getsan for his donation of services. If you haven’t heard of the sport, you will soon. It is the new tennis! 2014 is sure to be another busy and productive year. We will continue to work on the final phases of the Brush Creek Trail as well as investigate and plan for new trail connections as development of approved plans continue. The department will be working with Musco Lighting to install lights on Floyd Davison Field, at Warrendale Park and Knob Field, at Knob Hill Park. The lighting projects will provide additional playing times for the ball teams. In the Fall of 2013 Marshall Township received a very generous donation from Lexus of North Hills. The Steigerwald barn which was located on Rowan Road right off of 19 was donated to the Township. The barn was disassembled by a talented Amish crew and is currently in storage. This spring we will be researching all the potential sites in which it could be resurrected on. This facility will provide a great venue for graduations, weddings, corporate outings and family reunions. We will be offering new and exciting programs this year. We are hopeful that you will find them interesting for yourself or your family. As always, new ideas for programs and park activities are always welcome. I can be reached at [email protected]. Don’t forget to submit your Snow Creation by February 28 th !!

See you in the park! Heather Cuyler Jerry

Public park and recreation agencies create healthy communities and play a fundamental role in enhancing the physical environments in which we live. Through facilities, outdoor settings, and services provided, they support good health for people of all abilities, ages, socio‐economic backgrounds, and ethnicities. They foster change through collaborative programs and policies that reach a vast population to: 

Help reduce obesity and incidence of chronic disease by providing opportunities to increase rigorous physical activity in a variety of forms;

Provide a connection to nature which studies demonstrate relieves stress levels, tightens interpersonal relationships, and improves mental health;

Aid in reducing hunger in America and increasing access to nutritious food options; and foster overall wellness and healthful habits, such as becoming tobacco‐free and engaging in enrichment opportunities that add balance to life.

Eagle Scout Project In August 2013, Connor Caruso, with volunteers from Troop 171 and his family, created a vernal pool near the Sean DeArment Nature Trail in Knob Hill Park. A total of 125 hours were put into this Eagle Scout Project. Vernal Pools are seasonally filled bodies of water that create a important habitat for animals. A vernal pool provides an oasis for amphibians as well as mammals to thrive. This vernal pool will benefit the animals and ecosystem of Knob Hill Park. Within a few days, frogs were moving into the newly created home!! Please take a minute to visit the site located on the trail. Special thanks to Marshall Township, The Home Depot, of Cranberry Township and the Sign Company in Ross Township. If you are ready to begin your Eagle Scout project and would like to create it in Marshall Township, please contact Heather Cuyler Jerry at 724-935-3090 x 114 or [email protected]
