Making Medieval Manuscripts Christopher de Hamel

Many beautiful illuminated manuscripts survive from the Middle Ages and can be seen in libraries and museums throughout Europe. But who were the skilled craftsmen who made these exquisite books? What precisely is parchment? How were medieval manuscripts designed and executed? What were the inks and pigments, and how were they applied? This book looks at the work of scribes, illuminators and book binders. Based principally on examples in the Bodleian Library, this lavishly illustrated account tells the story of manuscript production from the early Middle Ages through to the high Renaissance. Each stage of production is described in detail, from the preparation of the parchment, pens, paints and inks to the writing of the scripts and the final decoration and illumination of the manuscript. This book also explains the role of the stationer or bookshop, often to be found near cathedral and market squares, in the commissioning of manuscripts, and it cites examples of specific scribes and illuminators who can be identified through their work as professional lay artisans. Christopher de Hamel’s engaging text is accompanied by a glossary of key technical terms relating to manuscripts and illumination, providing an invaluable introduction for anyone interested in studying medieval manuscripts today. 73 colour illustrations. Christopher de Hamel, formerly of Sotheby’s, is a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He is the author of Bibles and his most recent book is Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts. Praise for De Hamels Meetings With Remarkable Manuscripts: “Spectacular ... If I could walk you to your nearest bookshop, take £30 from your wallet, and place this wonderful book in your hands, I would” — Peter Thonemann, Sunday Times “Christopher de Hamel’s exploration of medieval manuscripts - a dozen peaks from St Augustine to Chaucer and beyond, gorgeously and copiously illustrated - is itself an extraordinary book, a work of scholarship and history salted with the author’s excitement as he conducts us among the great libraries of Western civilization. It is full of delights” — Tom Stoppard Pbk | 176pp | 9781851244683 | 2017.11 Bodleian Library | A$34.99 | NZ$39.99 | 215x200mm | UKt

DECEMBER FEATURE TITLES Statin Nation: The Ill-Founded War on Cholesterol, What Really Causes Heart Disease, and the Truth About the Most Overprescribed Drugs in the World JUSTIN SMITH

• Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, and for decades conventional health authorities have pushed that the culprits are fat and cholesterol clogging up coronary arteries. • However, cholesterol guidelines have been heavily criticized, and increasingly, doctors and researchers have been questioning the role cholesterol plays in heart disease. • Cholesterol-lowering Statin drugs are now the most prescribed medication in the world but largescale studies have proven that statins are not generating the benefits that were predicted. • This book offers a complete reevaluation of the real causes of heart disease as well as an inquiry into why the pharmaceutical industry continues to overprescribe statins and market them aggressively to consumers. • Justin Smith forges an innovative path away from the outdated cholesterol myth with a viable alternative model to address the real causes of heart disease. What Makes a Terrorist: Economics and the Roots of Terrorism 10th Anniversary Edition ALAN KRUEGER

• Alan Krueger has been described as “an expert on one thing after another,” because his studies have been so widely varied – from the economics of education to the benefits of increasing minimum wages. • Here Krueger tackles terrorism and its sources as he once studied hate crimes in general, using empirical evidence. • In the first edition he showed that the first generation of terrorists inspired by Osama bin Laden and his cohort aren’t uneducated and poverty stricken; most are educated and actively engaged with their societies. • What’s new in the second edition? The portrait of terror has changed somewhat. • With the rise of ISIS, the ongoing civil war in Syria, and the growth of terror in Europe, this second generation of terror is different from the previous generation: these new terrorists aren’t recruited from the affluent classes but from the poor. Delirious: Art at the Limits of

Maria and Me

Reason, 1950-1980

MARIA GALLARDO AND MIGUEL

KELLY BAUM, LUCY BRADNOCK

GALLARDO

AND TINA RYAN

Giving a father’s insight into life with his daughter Maria, aged 12, who has autism, this comic tells the story of their week holiday in the Canary Islands, Spain. Delightful illustrations and dialogue between father and daughter show the day-to-day challenges that people with autism and their carers face, and how Miguel and Maria overcome them.

Addressing the maniacal, eccentric, and disorienting in artworks made between 1950 and 1980, Delirious situates a fascination with the absurd and irrational within the context of the violence and brutality witnessed during World War II as well as the rapid expansion of industrial capitalism in the 1950s. Skepticism of science and technology—along with fear of its capability to promote mass destruction—developed into a distrust of rationalism, which in the arts had the paradoxical result of extracting irrational effects from rational means. Disturbing and challenging, these works upended traditional notions of aesthetic harmony. This thought-provoking book features work by approximately 70 artists from Europe, Latin America, and the United States. 150 color illustrations.

Funny and endearing, this comic helps to show how Maria sees and experiences the world in her own way and that she’s unique, just like everyone else. “Do not be deceived by the apparent simplicity of Gallardo’s drawings. Stripped of unneeded decorations these drawings will capture you with their purity. This purity is what this book is about. Pure love between a father and daughter. Love towards family and friends. Love towards life.” — Hanoch Piven, Illustrator & Educator

CHILDREN’S NONFICTION What Does Consent Really

I See You

Mean?

MICHAEL GENHART

PETE WALLIS AND THALIA WALLIS

I See You is a wordless picture book that depicts a homeless woman who is not seen by everyone around her — except for a little boy.

“Consent is not the absence of ‘NO’, it is an enthusiastic YES!!” While seemingly straightforward, Tia and Bryony hadn’t considered this subject too seriously until it comes up in conversation with their friends and they realise just how important it is. Following the sexual assault of a classmate, a group of teenage girls find themselves discussing the term consent, what it actually means for them in their current relationships, and how they act and make decisions with peer influence. Joined by their male friends who offer another perspective, this rich graphic novel uncovers the need for more informed conversations with young people around consent and healthy relationships. Accompanying the graphics are sexual health resources for students and teachers, which make this a perfect tool for broaching the subject with teens. Age Range: 13-18 year olds. Full colour throughout.

Over the course of a year, the boy is witness to all that she endures. Ultimately, in a gesture of compassion, the boy acknowledges her in an exchange in which he sees her and she experiences being seen. This book opens the door for kids and parents to begin a conversation about homelessness. Becoming an Ally to the Gender-Expansive Child: A Guide for Parents and Carers ANNA BIANCHI

When Anna Bianchi’s grandchild asked, “Nanny, you do know I’m a girl don’t you?”, Anna recognised this as a pivotal moment in their relationship. She also understood that to fully support her grandchild, who had been declared a boy at birth, she needed to examine her own attitudes, beliefs and assumptions about gender. With reassuring honesty, depth and openness, she draws on her own experience, as well as interviews with gender expansive children and their families, to map out the path to becoming an ally. She explains why a child dressing, playing and communicating in gender fluid ways may feel provocative, how culture reinforces this and how parents and caregivers are frequently left feeling confused and isolated. She provides a step-by-step guide through this experience and explains how to undo and rebuild a personal understanding of gender.

How to Understand Your Gender: A Practical Guide for Exploring Who You Are ALEX IANTAFFI AND MEG-JOHN

WILLIAM ZIEMBA, SEBASTIEN

BARKER

LLEO AND MIKHAIL ZHITLUKHIN

Have you ever questioned your own gender identity? Do you know somebody who is transgender or who identifies as non-binary? Do you ever feel confused when people talk about gender diversity?

This book presents studies of stock market crashes, big and small, that occur from bubbles bursting or other reasons. The book presents four models that have been successful in predicting large stock market declines of ten percent plus that average about minus twenty-five percent. The authors also present research on the positive effects of FOMC (The Federal Open Market Committee within the Federal Reserve System) meetings and small cap dominance with Democratic Presidents. Small declines in the five to fifteen percent range are also studied - both the expected and the unexpected. Methods to deal with these situations are also presented.

This down-to-earth guide is for anybody who wants to know more about gender, from its biology, history and sociology, to how it plays a role in our relationships and interactions with family, friends, partners and strangers. It looks at practical ways people can express their own gender, and will help you to understand people whose gender might be different from your own. With activities and points for reflection throughout, this book will help people of all genders engage with gender diversity and explore the ideas in the book in relation to their own lived experiences.

HEALTH Children’s Medicines: What Every

Another Person’s Poison: A

Parent, Grandparent, and

History of Food Allergy

Teacher Needs to Know

NEW IN PAPERBACK

EDWARD BELL

MATTHEW SMITH

Most parents have worried about the side effects and possible longterm consequences of administering a particular medication to their child. The medication may be available overthe-counter, like cough syrup, or it may be prescribed by a doctor, like an antibiotic. Parents want to know: Is the medication safe? Is it effective? Will it help my child?

To some, food allergies seem like fabricated cries for attention. To others, they pose a dangerous health threat. Food allergies are bound up with so many personal and ideological concerns that it is difficult to determine what is medical and what is myth.

A pediatric pharmacist for nearly thirty years, Edward A. Bell has spent his career listening carefully to parents’ concerns. In Children’s Medicines, Bell draws on the latest scientific information, coupled with his experience in hospital and clinic settings, as a university professor, and as a parent, to answer questions about whether, when, and what medications to give to infants, children, and teenagers. Bell touches on practical issues of medication administration and explores areas of particular concern for parents. “This guide is concise and very easy to read and understand... It is written in a descriptive yet straightforward way... It would be a wonderful addition to any family’s reference library.”— Annals of Pharmacotherapy

Another Person’s Poison parses the political, economic, cultural, and genuine health factors of a phenomenon that dominates our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves. For most of the twentieth century, food allergies were considered a fad or junk science. While many physicians and clinicians argued that certain foods could cause a range of chronic problems, from asthma and eczema to migraines and hyperactivity, others believed that allergies were psychosomatic. This book traces the trajectory of this debate and its effect on publichealth policy and the production, manufacture, and consumption of food. HISTORY London Fog: The Biography NEW IN PAPERBACK CHRISTINE CORTON

In popular imagination, London is a city of fog. The classic London fogs, the thick yellow “pea-soupers,” were born in the industrial age of the early nineteenth century. The first globally notorious instance of air pollution, they remained a constant feature of cold, windless winter days until clean air legislation in the 1960s brought about their demise. Christine L. Corton tells the story of these epic London fogs, their dangers and beauty, and their lasting effects on our culture and imagination. Corton combines historical and literary sensitivity with an eye for visual drama - generously illustrated here - to reveal London fog as one of the great urban spectacles of the industrial age. 28 color illustrations and 63 halftones. “Christine L. Corton, clad in an overcoat, with a linklighter before her, takes us into the gloomier, long 19th century, where she revels in its Gothic grasp. Beautifully illustrated, London Fog delves fascinatingly into that swirling miasma.” — Philip Hoare, New Statesman

STEPHEN MITCHELL

World SCOTT TONG

When journalist Scott Tong moved to Shanghai, his assignment was to start up the first full-time China bureau for “Marketplace,” the daily business and economics program on public radio stations across the United States. But for Tong the move became much more—it offered the opportunity to reconnect with members of his extended family who had remained in China after his parents fled the communists six decades prior. By uncovering the stories of his family’s history, Tong discovered a new way to understand the defining moments of modern China and its long, interrupted quest to go global. A Village with My Name offers a unique perspective on the transitions in China through the eyes of regular people who have witnessed such epochal events as the toppling of the Qing monarchy, Japan’s occupation during World War II, exile of political prisoners to forced labor camps, mass death and famine during the Great Leap Forward, market reforms under Deng Xiaoping, and the dawn of the One Child Policy.

The Deals of Warren Buffett: Volume I, The first $100m GLEN ARNOLD

Starting from scratch, it took the world’s greatest investor, Warren Buffett, nearly five decades to make his first $100m. This book explains the reasoning behind each investing milestone on that journey, tracks the deals he made and shows how they added to his wealth. Without much of an idea about investing in shares at the beginning, Buffett had to develop his investment philosophy, and learn through success and failure how to select companies worth backing. It was not all plain sailing, with many mistakes along the way; and there were long periods of frustration with the market. The fact that Buffett made errors is quite reassuring for other investors. The key is to learn from them, and to accept with evenness of temper the many bumps in the road.

Beowulf tells the story of a Scandinavian hero who defeats three evil creatures—a huge, cannibalistic ogre named Grendel, Grendel’s monstrous mother, and a dragon—and then dies, mortally wounded during his last encounter. If the definition of a superhero is “someone who uses his special powers to fight evil,” then Beowulf is our first English superhero story, and arguably our best. It is also a deeply pious poem, so bold in its reverence for a virtuous pagan past that it teeters on the edge of heresy. Stephen Mitchell’s marvelously clear and vivid rendering re-creates the robust masculine music of the original. It both hews closely to the meaning of the Old English and captures its wild energy and vitality, not just as a deep “work of literature” but also as a rousing entertainment that can still stir our feelings and rivet our attention today, after more than a thousand years. “Stephen Mitchell’s new translation of Beowulf is elegantly wrought, highly accurate, and fully annotated. It is a compact and remarkably readable version.” — Eric Weiskott, Boston College

Our Awakening Universe

This book is a collection of personal memories about the people who participated in the USSR atomic project — Landau, Alikhanov, Pomeranchuk, Alikhanian, Migdal Jr., Gribov, Zeldovich, Sakharov, Kurchatov, Vannikov, Eldian. As the author is the only living person who was involved in the project, these personal recollections are interesting and unique for a broad audience who has been unfamiliar with the details so far.

JOHN HAUGHT

Over the past two centuries scientific advances have made it clear that the universe is a story still unfolding. In this thought-provoking book, John F. Haught considers the deeper implications of this discovery. He contends that many others who have written books on life and the universe—including Stephen Hawking, Stephen Jay Gould, and Richard Dawkins—have overlooked a crucial aspect of cosmic history: the drama of life’s awakening to interiority and religious awareness. Science may illuminate the outside story of the universe, but a full telling of the cosmic story cannot ignore the inside development that interiority represents. Haught addresses two primary questions: what does the arrival of religion tell us about the universe, and what does our understanding of the cosmos as an unfinished drama tell us about religion? The history of religion may be ambiguous and sometimes even barbarous, he asserts, but its role in the story of cosmic emergence and awakening must be taken into account.

With the work of journalists under fire around the world, this year’s anthology of National Magazine Awards finalists and winners is a timely reminder of the power of journalism. These pieces from writers driven to explore America’s fault lines include Shane Bauer’s harrowing “My Four Months as a Private Prison Guard” (Mother Jones), a visceral portrait of the abuses of the carceral system, and Sarah Stillman’s account of the havoc wreaked on young people’s lives when they are put on sex-offender registries (The New Yorker). Other selections take up the shocks of the election, including Matt Taibbi’s irreverent dispatches from the campaign trail (Rolling Stone) and George Saunders’s transfixing account of Trump’s rallies (The New Yorker). Jeffrey Goldberg talks through Obama’s foreign-policy legacy with the president (The Atlantic), Andrew Sullivan fears for the future of democracy (New York), and Gabriel Sherman relates how the women of Fox News brought to light Roger Ailes’s predations (New York).

DENNIS KLOCEK

The subject of color is a very important aspect of life and healing, especially healing what we could call the split in the world created by ordinary dualistic human perception. Rudolf Steiner speaks about this split in various different ways with a kind of “hidden” language, making it sometimes difficult to understand the fundamental idea. In this book, Dennis Klocek presents a kind of meditation on many different aspects of color and how we can work with the alchemical principles of Jachin and Boaz—the two pillars of Solomon’s Temple, representing the red and blue in the blood—to understand the Rosicrucian path in terms of color and healing. Using many examples from natural- and spiritual-scientific research into color and the rise of various color theories through history, Klocek zeros in on the real essence of colors and how they relate to us as human beings in our physical body and soul. 48 color illustrations.

Will Dunne first brought the workshop experience down to the desk level with The Dramatic Writer’s Companion, offering practical exercises to help playwrights and screenwriters work through the problems that arise in developing their scripts. Now writers looking to further enhance their storytelling process can turn to Character, Scene, and Story. Featuring forty-two new workshop-tested exercises, this sequel to The Dramatic Writer’s Companion allows writers to dig deeper into their scripts by fleshing out images, exploring characters from an emotional perspective, tapping the power of color and sense memory to trigger ideas, and trying other visceral techniques. The guide also includes a troubleshooting section to help tackle problem scenes. Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing.

In this thought-provoking book, Tobias Leenaert leaves well-trodden animal advocacy paths and takes a fresh look at the strategies, objectives, and communication of the vegan and animal rights movement. He argues that, given our present situation, with entire societies dependent on using animals, we need a very pragmatic approach. How to Create a Vegan World contains many valuable ideas and insights for both budding advocates for animals and seasoned activists, organizational leaders, and even entrepreneurs. “Big-hearted and level-headed Tobias Leenaert shows us how we need both idealism and pragmatism in the animal rights movement, and that we can make greater, more strategic strides in through collaboration, inclusiveness and meeting people where they’re at. Listen to Tobias.”— Jo-Anne McArthur, photojournalist, author, We Animals and Captive
