Sunflower Retriever Club History James Rohleder, Dave Gonzoles and Lonny Taylor decided to form a central Kansas retriever club while attending a field trial. During 1995 the first meeting of the Sunflower Retriever Club in Russell, Kansas, others attending were Ray Brown, Art Lufts, Steve Robbens, Bill Parman, Mike Gaughan, Dr. Mark Hook and Elaine Rohleder. Upon drafting the by-laws and articles of incorporation, the first officers were James Rohleder, President; Lonny Taylor, Vice President; and Elaine Rohleder, Secretary/Treasurer. Sunflower’s first event was a field trial in 1996 at Wilson Lake. Later that year an AKC hunt test was held at Victoria, Kansas. Mostly field trials followed for the next few years. Today, Sunflower with 38 members, typically has one hunt test and one field trial. In 1999, Tom and Marcia Traylor joined Sunflower Retriever Club. From 2002 forward, numerous trials and hunt tests were held on their Hazelton, Kansas, property. Over the years, Tom and Marcia have graciously opened the home and basement, and the old school across the street, to Sunflower’s staff and entrants for accommodations and a home cooked breakfast for those present. Their hospitality extended into hunting season. They were instrumental in the clubs success through being active in meetings, leadership, club training seasons, judging, and welcoming “new comers” to the “dog game”. Tragically, in February 2011, we lost Marcia to an automobile accident. Sunflower Retriever Club dedicates its hosting of the 2013 MNRC event to Marcia Traylor.

Master National History of Flint Oak Lost in the mists of unrecorded history lie hundreds of years of habitation by Native Americans, primarily the Osage tribe, on the lands now covered by Flint Oak. Indian hunting parties in search of Buffalo originally formed the “Wolf Trail,” which runs through Flint Oak. Indian Creek may have been so named because the junction of Indian Creek and the Little Indian was a major Osage campsite. The original white settlers and the Osage tribe seem to have gotten along very well together. In fact, on the crest of a grassy knoll above the campsite, lie three Indian graves. Upon the purchasing of this land, we were shown these graves and appraised of a promise exacted by an Indian chief from his white friends back in those early days to maintain these graves safe and untouched. That promise is still honored to this day. The laid up rock corrals along Center Road bear the mute testimony to the hard life early settlers led. The land was too fragile for these homesteaders to make a living easily. Consequently, there were those who sought to get rich illegitimately such as two horse thieves who found an ideal hiding place for stolen stock in the natural rock formations that lie near the site of our Major European. Angry homesteaders finally caught them. While transporting the two thieves one of them asked to stop and relieve himself and he took the opportunity to run away and escape. This so upset the captors that they hung the other thief on the spot. (The large oak tree that has been pointed out in Zone 12 is believed to have sprouted from the original hanging tree.) During the construction of a private residence, stacked rocks marking the horse thief ‘s grave were found on the hillside above the low water bridge. Then there was the team from Gordon and Schultz, who molded counterfeit silver dollars and retouched two-dollar bills to look like twenties. Schultz got caught and, it is said, Gordon dumped all of the equipment at the fork of the Indian and Little Indian creeks. It was never found! A civil engineer first drew our attention to maps showing that pioneers used “Wolf Trail” and that the natural ford across Indian Creek (where the low water bridge is now) was once traveled by covered wagons. It is known that W. C. Coleman, founder of the Coleman Company, traveled this trail from Cherryvale to Wichita in a covered wagon as a boy.

Master National Flint Oak, Present Day In late 1978, Ray and Winona Walton agreed to purchase the first property that was to become Flint Oak. It was 699 acres and included the front complex that is now called headquarters. 1979 also saw the purchase of additional surrounding land, the construction of new buildings, and bulldozing of timber to create openings and edges for nesting areas on the preserve. In 1980, the Old Barn, full of dusty hay and victim of years of neglect, was (in Ray’s eyes) the perfect Members Lodge. Hugh Greer, a Wichita artist, was commissioned to do a rendering of how the old barn could look. Then working from a Polaroid picture of the rendering, a local contractor, Jim Harper, turned the vision into reality! By the fall of 1982, the wildlife habitat had been developed, the Lodge was restored, Center and Lodge lakes were completed and the water tower and purification system was installed. Finally, memberships to the hunting preserve were offered. From the first members (who were personal friends of either Ray or his longtime hunting companion and Flint Oak’s original Ranch Manager Pete Laughlin), the membership slowly grew through word of mouth. In January of 2007, Flint Oak was bought from the Waltons by Bob Geist and Tom Devlin. Their goal is to enhance the Flint Oak magic by adding improvements as needed, and keeping the needs of the customers foremost. Flint Oak has never advertised for members and has limited the membership based on what our game birds and wildlife habitat can handle and still maintain “old-fashioned natural hunting” conditions. We have been fortunate to attract a solid base of members who are true sportsmen, appreciating Flint Oak as a snapshot of the type of bird hunting that is fast disappearing in the U.S.A. These great members are the real foundation of Flint Oak, and because of them, it continues to prosper. Now owned and leased lands provide over 5,000 acres where guests can capture Magic Moments of old-fashioned field hunting, European-style pheasant shoots, deer and turkey hunting, and a variety of other outdoor experiences that will remain with them the rest of their lives. In the fall/spring of 2001, Indian Lake was started. The grand opening of our newly stocked 100-acre bass lake, Indian Lake was in April 2007. It promises to provide many exciting fishing opportunities. Flint Oak has closely managed this lake since the beginning, stocking it with bass, wiper and bluecats. We stocked the bass at a rate five times greater than the normal stocking rate, this insures a greater number of large fish to enable you to test your angling abilities.
