3 A DOG IS A WOLF? Here at Trophy, as you know, we run a customer service hotline for questions on our product range, nutrition and all manner of queries from our customers. Indeed, some of our more established customers just ring for a chat, which is such a joyful phone call. With the humanisation of pets / pet parenting we are seeing a new subject come up from time to time - questions relating to raw foods, raw feeding, human foods and prepared ‘raw’ foods for dogs. The basis of which stems, perhaps, from ‘all dogs are WOLFS’ and therefore they must only eat meat. The Wolf (Canis lupus lupus) and the domestic dog we know today (Canis lupus familiaris) are a separate sub species. The domestic dog of today may well have evolved from the Wolf, but we have been selectively breeding them over millennia. The result of which is a very different beast from the Wolf and the domestic dog is now classed as a carnivorous omnivore. Archaeological records show the remains of the dog buried beside humans some 36,000 years ago. When this genetic divergence of the dog and the Wolf took place remains unknown, but dogs are now, one of the most diverse species on the planet and their nutritional needs vary greatly due to factors such as their breed, gender, age, weight and health. Indeed, there is now much evidence to show that the modern domestic dog thrives on a nutritionally balanced diet which includes other ingredients, not just protein, and that this change was actually a crucial step in the early domestication of dogs**. Improved pet food nutrition and healthcare has led to dogs and cats living longer, according to new research*. Many factors have contributed to pets living longer and healthier lives (such as the prevalence of pets living indoors) but nutritional advances in complete pet foods and modern veterinary care are amongst the main reasons. In addition, a recent study by PLos Genetics (published in Nature education) where scientists used high-throughput sequencing showed findings that suggested dogs share a common ancestor with wolves, rather than having been domesticated from them. Complete pet foods are safe, easy to feed and are packed with nutrition with many key benefits. Your beautiful pet dog, in our view, is not a wolf. TROPHY NATURAL HERBAL BLENDS FOR DOGS

Trophy Digestive Aid contains a blend of natural herbs renowned for their nutritional support of the digestive system which may be beneficial to dogs that have ‘delicate tummies’ and suffer from digestive upsets, stomach or bowel problems. Many of the queries we get on the Trophy customer service hotline relate to the dogs diet and are very often digestion and bowel related. We advise switching to one of our Trophy premium dog foods and adding this wonderful herbal blend to the dogs food. Trophy Digestive Aid contains chamomile which acts as a calming and digestive tonic, scullcap, again helps to calm and relax; and mint which helps support the nervous system and is great in maintaining a healthy digestive system. Also contains aniseed which helps improve appetite, promotes digestion and relives flatulence. We finish with comfrey leaf with its support of a healthy digestive system. This herbal blend can also be mixed with Trophy Immune Support for dogs that also have allergies or sensitivities. Composition: Mint, Chamomile, Comfrey Leaf, Aniseed, and Scullcap. From £9.50 for 200g. Ask your local Trophy Nutritional Adviser to add a tub to your next order.

WINTER TWEETS FOR OUR WILD BIRDS The gardens of the British Isles are home to a host of wild birds and many of us enjoy bird watching and feeding a variety of these birds. The autumn and winter months can be tough on wild birds as food supplies become depleted and water sources become frozen. We can give them an extra helping hand to survive the harsher weather, by providing a selection of food and a water supply in our back gardens. Here at Trophy we have a wild bird seed made especially for the autumn and winter months:

TROPHY PREMIUM WILD BIRD SEED AUTUMN WINTER MIX

A premium mix wild bird food, suitable for feeding tables or feeders. Offering a broad range of premium seeds, with a high fat and energy content. At this time of year, put out food and water on a regular basis. In severe weather, feed twice daily if you

can: in the morning and in the early afternoon.

5kg from £6.90 / 20kg from £17.65. This food and all our other wild bird seeds are available from your local Trophy Nutritional Adviser; please order when they next call.

CHRISTMAS EVENTS Birds require high energy (high fat) foods during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat reserves and survive the frosty nights. Providing access to water at this time of year, is just as important as feeding our birds. A lack of available (not frozen) water is one main reason birds do not make it through the winter. Good hygiene is also vital - do replace any left-over food every few weeks and disinfect your feeders and tables, with a suitable product.

Our festive event diary for all the Christmas shows, gift fairs and seasonal events our local Trophy Nutritional advisers are attending this coming season, can be found on our website. These events are a great way to catch up with your Trophy Nutritional Adviser, pick up some Christmas treats and toys for your pets, or try one of our Trophy Starter Packs. There are events up and down the country – check out our website for ones near you – trophypetfoods.co.uk/events
