What is TRUST! Magazine
a note from the executive editor Organizational trust is a key driver of longterm success, but often leaders mistakenly assume that to earn trust, a company need only be profitable.
http://trustacrossamerica.com/magazine.shtml
This anniversary issue of TRUST! Magazine salutes both those whose work helps build organizational trust, as well as organizations that lead with trust.
What do we mean by trust?
A special geographic directory is included in the back of this issue.
TRUST! Is a digital magazine published 4 times each year and dedicated to helping leaders and organizations build long-term trust.
Trust is built through: VISION: An understanding that building trust into an organization’s DNA will lead to long-term profitability. CULTURE: Instilling the values, principles and beliefs essential to building a foundation of trust.
We hope you continue to learn about the importance of organizational trust and share this free resource with others. Barbara Brooks Kimmel, Executive Editor, TRUST! Magazine

Let’s Redouble Our Trust Building Work Pollsters tell us we don’t trust our politicians, CEOs, banks, Wall Street, and mega-‐‑firms from Big Oil to Big Pharma. Sometimes, we don’t trust our business partners, or our “life-‐‑ partners.” Lack of trust is a huge problem. Why? Because leadership, business, and life are all about relationships. And the best relationships are built on trust. When trust is lacking, relationships founder.
My leadership work with organizations dives deeply into shared values, inspirational purpose, ethics, sustainability, and culture. All those facets of leadership are important. But the issue that seems to resonate most with people is trust.
People “get” trust. They know what trust means because they experience it, positively or negatively, every day with their family, colleagues, or in the marketplace. Too often, people struggle with organizational values that are jokes on the company website, or defining a noble purpose for their organization. They don’t know how to deal with ethical dilemmas, or how to form a healthy culture. We need to shift some of our focus from esoteric concepts like ethics and culture to trust. That’s why I value my association with Trust Across America – Trust Around the World. I have met outstanding people like Stephen M. R. Covey, Charlie Green, Barbara Kimmel, Jim Kouzes, Bob Whipple (The Trust Ambassador), and more. Trust matters. Let’s redouble our trust-‐‑building work together.

NEW FROM TRUST ACROSS AMERICATRUST AROUND THE WORLD WHAT IS A TRUSTLET™? Organizational trust is not a “soft skill.” Some of the strategic advantages of a high-trust culture are:
to
•
Fewer crises and the ability to recover more rapidly
•
A large trust “bank account”
•
Faster decision making
•
Higher employee engagement
•
Greater innovation (high trust fuels high innovation, not the other way around)
•
Increased long-term profitability
And because trust is usually ignored or taken for granted, its decline continues across all major institutions. Some of the warning signs of low trust include:
on Completing Year One of Trust Magazine.
24 | Trust Across America | Fall 2015
A Trustlet™ is a small case study in organizational trust described in one page, and containing no more than four short supporting articles to be read in advance of a discussion, and no more than six potential discussion topics. Facilitator instructions are included. Each Trustlet will draws from a “real life,” newsworthy, organizational trust challenge and is written by members of the Alliance of Trustworthy Business Experts or our Top Thought Leaders.
WHO IS THE INTENDED AUDIENCE? Following are some of the suggested audiences for Trustlets: •
Executive Education
•
Undergraduate & Graduate Business Classes
•
Work Teams in Any Organization
•
Disengaged boards with minimal diversity
•
Short-term profit maximization at all costs
•
Boards & C-Suites
•
Decreasing CEO tenure and increasing compensation packages tied to quarterly earnings
•
Workshops & Facilitated Discussions
•
Siloized decision making
WHY TRUSTLETS?
•
Increasing regulation and larger legal and compliance departments
•
High employee turnover
•
Using CSR or sustainability “programs” as corporate window dressing
The participant will gain a deeper understanding of the role of trust in organizational strategy. Trustlets compel participants to apply their theoretical ideas and practical trust experiences to real-world cases.
•
Taking trust for granted or passing it off to the marketing department.
