TURKEY FOOD SECURITY & AGRICULTURE SECTOR Quarter 1 2017

Inter-Agency Coordination Turkey

NARRATIVE

General Overview: At the beginning of 2017, the Food Security Working Group was expanded to include the Agriculture sector. To support discussions within the newly-reconstituted forum, FAO was brought on board as the group’s co-coordinator. Agriculture-related programming carries significant and, arguably, underutilized potential to promote food security and livelihoods among Syrian refugees and host communities in Turkey. During their first meeting as the FSAWG, partners focused on sharing information on challenges and good practices identified through pilot agriculture activities, including micro-gardening projects and small-scale farming initiatives. Going forward, with a view to further promoting rural livelihoods, plans are in place to comprehensively assess labor market opportunities in the agriculture sector. Efforts over the coming quarter will focus on improving situational awareness and, on this basis, refining the group’s strategic objectives and work plan, as well as stepping-up reporting and exploring potential synergies between the FSAWG and the Protection and Livelihoods sectors.

Achievements: Approximately 148,000 Syrian men, women, boys, and girls received food assistance between January and the end of March;* Good practices and lessons learned in micro-gardening projects and small-scale farming initiatives documented to inform future programming; Planning for a comprehensive assessment of labour market opportunities in the agriculture sector is now underway.
