Between 1 January and 31 October 2016, 24,902 children arrived to Italy by sea: 91% of children arrived unaccompanied (22,772). UASC account for some 14% of all sea arrivals in the above period, an increase of around 110% compared to the same period of 2015.

There has been a progressive increase in UASC arriving by sea since the beginning of the year, with a sharp increase in June, when 3,515 UASC arrived (out of 22,371 total sea arrivals). Of 27,384 total sea arrivals in October, 3,771 (14%) were UASC.

UASC arriving between January and October 2016 are most commonly from Eritrea, Gambia and Nigeria. The number of Eritrean UASC arriving this year is slightly higher than the number recorded in the first ten months of 2015 (2,995). However, they now account for 18% of all Eritrean sea arrivals, up from last year’s 8%. The numbers of both Gambian and Nigerian UASC rose significantly compared to the same period of last year (plus 225% and plus 203%, respectively). At the end of October, 2,863 Gambian, 2,732 Nigerian and 2,455 Egyptian UASC were rescued and have disembarked in Italy since the beginning of the year.

59% of all Egyptians who arrived by sea between January and October 2016 are UASC, which is significantly higher than the proportion of UASC from all other nationalities. UASC from The Gambia account for 27% of all Gambians, up from last year’s 13%. Among Nigerian sea arrivals, UASC account for 8%.

Most UASC arriving by sea are boys and are 16 and 17 years old. However, exact figures on gender are currently unavailable.
