Between 1 January and 31 August 2017, 13,227 unaccompanied and separated children arrived in Italy by sea, representing 13% of all sea arrivals in this period. This proportion is comparable to the first eight months UASC of 2016, when 15% of those arriving by sea were UASC. However, consistent with a recent drop in sea arrivals, UASC numbers have also decreased compared to January-August 2016, when 16,863 UASC arrived. of sea arrivals

UASC arriving by sea in the first eight months of 2017 most commonly originated from Guinea (1,736), Côte d'Ivoire (1,381), The Gambia (1,337), Bangladesh (1,297), and Nigeria (1,116). During this period, significant numbers of UASC arrivals also originated from Eritrea (964), Mali (796), the Syrian Arab Republic (476), Somalia (683), and Senegal (690).

Eritrean UASC were the most numerous UASC group arriving by sea in 2016, with over 2,600 registered at landing points in the first eight months of the year. However, during the same period in 2017, only 964 Eritrean UASC have disembarked, accounting for 17% of Eritrean sea arrivals so far this year. In the first eight months of 2017, 29% of Somali arrivals were UASC, followed by 29% of Iraqi arrivals, 24% of Gambians, 24%
