UIC BASKETBALL NOTES BLOCK PARTY Tai Odiase has established himself as one of the Horizon League’s leading shot blockers. Odiase, who ranks second in the conference, and 25th nationally, with 2.5 blocks per game, sent back a career-high eight shots against Green Bay on Jan. 14. It marked only the fifth time in program history that a player collected as many rejections in one night, and the first since Scott VanderMeer equaled that amount on Feb. 5, 2009, vs. Cleveland State. The UIC single-game record for blocks is nine with both VanderMeer (1/27/07) and Sherrell Ford (2/28/94) accomplishing the feat. Odiase has blocked at least five shots three times this season, including twice in the last three games.

MILESTONE WATCH UIC, which began NCAA Division I play in 1981, needs only one win to reach No. 500 at this level. The first win of the Division I era came on Dec. 4, 1981, 74-66, at Wisconsin. The first team was fielded for the 1947-48 season, and the first triumph was over Aurora on Jan. 9, 1948, 49-43. To date the program owns 808 all-time victories.

UIC BASKETBALL NOTES THESE KIDS CAN PLAY UIC’s roster features eight underclassmen, including six freshmen, one sophomore and one redshirt sophomore. That group, which comprises 61.5 percent of the roster has combined to play 2,262 minutes through 17 games, or 66.5 percent of the entire team’s total. Underclassmen have scored 738 of 1,113 points (66.3 percent) for the Flames, while grabbing 400 of 677 rebounds (59 percent). Freshman Dikembe Dixson leads UIC in all three categories in his first collegiate season.

LINEUP SHUFFLE UIC head coach Steve McClain has used 12 different starting lineup combinations in 17 games. He has repeated one lineup four times, and another twice. In total, 11 different Flames have received a starting nod this year after Michael Kolawole made his first collegiate start at Oakland on Jan. 10. Only Tai Odiase and Dikembe Dixson have opened all 16 games, while Lance Whitaker has started 13 games overall, including the last 10 in a row.

HORIZON LEAGUE’S FINEST FRESHMAN UIC newcomer Dikembe Dixson has not only been one of the most prolific freshmen in the Horizon League, but one of its top players overall. The Freeport, Ill., native ranks sixth overall in scoring with 15.4 ppg, eighth in rebounding with

6.4 rpg and 13th in shot blocking with 0.6 bpg. The forward is currently the one of three players from any class, and the lone freshman, to rank among the conference’s top 13 in all three of those categories. NKU’s Jalen Billups is ninth in scoring, 13th in rebounding and third in blocked shots and Oakland’s Jalen Hayes is 11th in scoring, second in rebounding and 12th in blocked shots.

HERE COMES KOLAWOLE UIC freshman Michael Kolawole has emerged as a key contributor since the onset of Horizon League play. The Rowlett, Texas, native has been the team’s best shooter from the field (18-of-33; 54.5%) and beyond the arc (4-of-9; 44.4%) in six conference games, while ranking second with 8.3 points per game. Kolawole shot 40 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range with 2.3 ppg in non-conference play. He is averaging 17.0 minutes per game over the last six contests, up from 7.9 mpg prior to Jan. 2.

MOTOR CITY MADMAN With all due respect to Ted Nugent, UIC freshman Dikembe Dixson was a bit of a Motor City Madman during his team’s games at Detroit and Oakland on Jan. 8 and 10, respectively. For a conference-best fourth time in nine weeks, Dixson was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week on Monday, Jan. 11.

UIC BASKETBALL NOTES MORE ON DIXSON’S DOMINANT WEEKEND The Freeport, Ill., native averaged 25.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 2.0 spg against the Titans and Golden Grizzlies. He matched a career high, for the second time in four games, with 28 points at Oakland, and he scored 38 of his 50 points (76 percent) in the second halves of those contests. Dixson is the first Flame to win the HL Freshman of the Week award four times, and he is the first player in program history to win at least four weekly recognitions of any kind since Mark Miller won the conference’s Player of the Week award four times during the 1997-98 campaign.

FINISHING STRONG Statistically speaking, UIC has been a more productive team in the second half of games this season. The Flames have scored an average of 7.6 more points per game in the final period, while shooting better percentages from the floor, the free-throw line and beyond the arc. Individually, sophomore Tai Odiase has had a significant impact down the stretch as he averages 5.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in the second half this season compared to 2.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in the first. Freshman Dikembe Dixson has also provided late contributions with an average of 8.8 points in the final 20 minutes. He has also made 15 of his 23 3-pointers on the season in the second half this year.

NAJEAL FITS NICELY

Junior transfer Najeal Young returned to court at Valparaiso on Jan. 2 after missing nearly 2.5 games with an injury he sustained at Loyola on Dec. 19. The Milwaukee, Wis., native has started three games since and he is averaging 6.2 points and 4.5 rebounds against conference foes. He broke 30 POINTS OR MORE (AT UIC) out offensively against Detroit on Jan. 8 with a No. Player 2014-15 Career career-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. On Jan. 10 at Oakland, Young corralled a career-high eight rebounds to lead all players in DOUBLE-DIGIT REBOUNDING GAMES (AT UIC) that contest.

SIR LANCE-DOES-A-LOT Redshirt sophomore Lance Whitaker has shown marked improvement in his second full season at UIC. After suffering a torn ACL only three games into his collegiate career in 2013, the Bartlett, Ill., native has been one of the most improved players under Steve McClain. Whitaker has appeared in all 17 games with 13 starts (10 consecutive); he’s upped his scoring average from 2.9 ppg a year ago to 4.8 ppg this season, while nearly doubling his work on the boards from 2.0 rpg to 3.9 rpg. Whitaker already has a career-high 56 assists on the year as he leads the Flames with 3.3 apg. On Jan. 14 vs. Green Bay, he distributed a career-best nine helpers.

WINDEX MEN On the offensive end, the Flames average 13.8 rebounds per game, ranking 26th in the country in that category. Those boards have helped UIC average 12.2 second-chance points per game. Tai Odiase ranks second in the conference with 2.6 offensive caroms per contest, while Jake Wiegand is just outside the top 10 in the Horizon League with 1.8 per game. Defensively, UIC ranks fourth in the Horizon League and 54th in the NCAA with 39.8 rebounds per game. Freshman Dikembe Dixson paces the squad and ranks eighth in the conference (tops among freshmen) with 6.4 boards per game.

MINUTE MEN Freshman Dikembe Dixson leads UIC, and ranks fourth in the Horizon League, in playing time this season with 577 minutes, or 33.9 minutes per game. He played all 40 minutes for the first time in his career at Oakland on Jan. 10, and he is second in conference play with 38.2 minutes per Horizon League game. Dixson has played 31 minutes or more 14 times, including in each of the last 12 games. Ten Flames, including four true freshmen, are averaging at least 10.2 minutes per game this season.

UIC at Northern Kentucky | Jan. 22, 2016 UIC BASKETBALL NOTES SHARING THE ROCK

ROTATION ROULETTE

UIC has registered double-digit assists in 12 of its 16 games, reaching 15plus helpers seven times. The Flames notched 20-plus assists in a single game for the third time this season when they hit the mark vs. Green Bay on Jan. 14. Lance Whitaker had a career-high nine assists against the Phoenix, which is the best single-game total for any UIC distributor this season. He’s led the squad in assists nine times in 16 games.

In 16 of 17 games this season, UIC head coach Steve McClain has used no fewer than five players off his bench. The lone exception came on Dec. 16 against Illinois State when only three reserves were pressed into action. Michael Kolawole, Gabe Snider and Jake Wiegand all played against the Redbirds that night. Kolawole notched career highs in points (11) and rebounds (6) against Milwaukee on Saturday. Though he’s started four times, Najeal Young has come on in a reserve role in nine games, averaging 4.7 ppg and 3.8 rpg in those tilts.

CAREER-HIGH TAI Sophomore Tai Odiase established statistical career highs in each of UIC’s first three games this season. In the opener against San Francisco (Nov. 13), the Glenwood, Ill., native rejected a career-high five shots. In UIC’s second game at Western Illinois (Nov. 17), Odiase sank a careerhigh eight free throws against the Leathernecks. Finally, he poured in a career-best 23 points with 10 field goals in the victory over Roosevelt on Nov. 24.

LOCAL FLAVOR Seven of the 13 players on UIC’s roster are native to the state of Illinois, and seven of those Flames hail from the Chicagoland area. Seniors Gabe Snider (Whitney Young H.S.) is from Chicago, as is junior Josh Joiner (Willowbrook H.S.) and freshman Dominique Matthews (St. Rita H.S.). Sophomores Lance Whitaker (Bartlett H.S.) and Tai Odiase (HomewoodFlossmoor H.S.), plus freshman Julian Torres (Bolingbrook H.S.) call suburban Chicagoland home. Finally, freshman Dikembe Dixson is originally from Freeport, Ill., a town about 110 miles northwest of the Windy City.

THE WORD ON MCCLAIN...

“Coach McClain is a great coach. He taught me how to work hard and appreciate the game. He taught us how to win, and of course, the importance of doing it all at ‘game speed.’ UIC hired a great coach and an even better person. I wish him, his family and the University the best.”
