UK Inhaler Group Job Description: Chair Background: The UK Inhaler Group is an active and influential coalition of organisations with a key interest in Respiratory Health. The Group was formed in 2014 and is funded through grants from a number of pharmaceutical companies. The Chair is appointed for a period of three years by the Group. The position is now vacant as the current Chair has completed their term of office. The post is unpaid, however reasonable travel expenses and subsistence will be reimbursed.

Role: The Chair will provide leadership to UKIG and its members and is supported by the secretariat and Steering Group. The Chair will support the Group in its aim to promote the correct use of inhaled respiratory therapies across

UK health systems and at policy level, in order to improve the outcomes of those living with respiratory conditions.

Main duties: The Chair will lead the group towards reaching its aim by:  Acting as an ambassador for UK Inhaler Group and its work and to promote the appropriate use of inhaled medications;  Building and maintaining strong relationships with existing members and supporters, as well as reaching out to attract new members;  Being aware of the key issues concerning inhaled medications and keeping abreast of all current news;  Working with our steering group to ensure that all issues relevant to the group are disseminated efficiently and acted upon in a timely manner;  Engaging with pharmaceutical companies, industry partners and sponsors and being responsible for all fundraising activities for UKIG;  Speaking on behalf of the group at conferences and to the media;  Acting as a representative for UKIG in other groups e.g. Advisory Boards, International Coalitions;  Chairing meetings of UKIG and to lead the preparation of papers/agendas;  Providing support and advice to the Project Manager, Advocacy Lead and Secretariat.

Person Specification: 

A passion for the mission and objectives of UKIG;



The Chair should have a clinical background and a good understanding of clinical issues that relate to inhaled medications;



A solid understanding of the UK respiratory community and stakeholders:



Experience of working with the pharmaceutical industry



Experience of Chairing multi-professional/organisational groups;



Experience and ability to engage effectively in advocacy activities;



Interest in educating the general public/raising awareness about inhaled medications



Passionate about engaging with and listening to respiratory patients



Interest in patient/health professional education;



Ability to devote requisite time to the work of UKIG – approximately 12-15 hrs month:



Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including working with the media.

Membership and Appointment

Members will be nominated from their organisations and will have designated authority to represent them. They will be responsible for gaining their wider views when appropriate. CEOs/Chairs of all organisations will be copied into all activities and minutes of the group. Co-opted members will be other individuals who may not be officially representing a group, but have expertise that would be useful to the group

Chair

The Chair will be nominated from the group and will remain in post for up to three years

Frequency of Meetings

Meetings will be held every three months (or more frequent when necessary). Meetings will generally be held by conference call. Sub-group activity will run outside of the main meetings

Record of Meetings

All meetings will be documented and actions from these meetings will be circulated to each member organisation representative and relevant Chair/CEO

Reporting Mechanism

Each member will ensure that there is a mechanism to feedback to their representative organisation

Purpose 



To be an advisory group on issues related to inhaled respiratory therapies (excluding technical issues); To advocate for raised public and patient awareness on inhaled therapies; To promote systems across the NHS that will ensure standardisation of inhaler instruction. This will include sharing examples of best practice; To promote simple, consistent, standardised education and training of health care professionals and others such as school teachers, social workers; To promote simple, consistent, standardised education and training for patients and their carers; To be both reactive and proactive to the needs of the respiratory community.

         
