Undergraduate Study Abroad Grants Program Summer and Fall 2017 The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture International Programs offers a competitive grants program for undergraduates planning to study abroad in Summer 2017 and Fall 2017. This program serves as an opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in UT-approved study abroad programs in any location outside the US. These programs can include Maymester (mini-term) courses, summer experiences abroad, full semester programs, and any other UT-approved study abroad program. These programs should occur between May and December 2017. Eligibility Any University of Tennessee, Knoxville undergraduate student is eligible to apply for an award. The only exception is that students who have received funding in previous years under this program are not eligible for an award. Applications to study abroad in any country (or countries) outside of the United States are welcomed. All eligible applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. However, award preference will be given to applicants who fall into one or multiple of the following categories: • Participating in a CASNR study abroad program • Enrolled in the Minor in International Agriculture and Natural Resources • Enrolled in a College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) major • Honors students • GPA > 2.8 • Proposing to travel abroad for the first time

Due dates and funding decisions Electronically submit (in one PDF file) your application to Dr. Tom Gill, Director of International Programs, [email protected], First review of applications will take place on February 8, 2017. Submission by the first review date is highly recommended. If funding remains, a second and final review of applications will occur on February 24, 2017. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of CASNR faculty and decisions will be announced no later than February 28, 2017 with funding transferred to successful students in March.

Funding levels The maximum amount of an award is $500.

Application Package Application packages should include the following items, in order, and be emailed (no hard copies please) as one PDF file to: [email protected]. 1. Name of student 2. Student ID number 3. Destination of travel 4. Purpose of travel (semester abroad, mini-term class, internship, etc.). If traveling for a class, please provide the course number and title. 5. Dates of travel 6. Description of how the study abroad experience will enrich your studies (limit 250 words). Include statements such as: o how studying abroad fits with your personal, academic and/or career goals o how studying abroad will expand your horizons o why you would be an excellent ambassador on this experience for UTIA and the state of Tennessee. 7. Curriculum Vita (résumé) (one page)

Review criteria Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated based on the following criteria: I. Choice of a program and location that complements the student’s personal, academic and/or career goals. II. Potential for participation in the program to expand the student’s horizons on a professional, cultural, personal and/or academic level. III. Potential of student to be an excellent ambassador for UTIA and the state of Tennessee.

Following your experience All awardees will be expected to write a short report (500-800 words), with two or more photos of themselves on their study abroad, detailing: • what they learned from their study abroad experience • how their study abroad experience furthered their personal, academic and/or career goals. These reports will be due by September 1, 2017. • These reports, or sections of the reports, may appear in the CASNR Chronicle in the following year. • Recipients may be asked to serve as a UTIA Office of International Programs Ambassador.
