2013 LEGACY LUNCHEON HONORING

Mary Alice & Henry Cisneros

October 2013 LUNCHEON CO-CHAIRS

Dear Friend:

Patsy and Jack Martin

We are proud to co-chair this year’s Texas Legacy Luncheon to honor a couple we admire very much—Mary Alice and Henry Cisneros. The luncheon is on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Priscilla and John-Michael Cortez BOARD OF DIRECTORS Jim Hine, Chair Dazzie McKelvy, Secretary Linda Aaker Myra Caridad Garcia John Castle, Jr. David Chappell John Hildreth William P. Hobby Ron Lewis Elena Marks Steve Murdock, Ph.D. Cynthia Osborne, Ph.D. R. Patrick Rodriguez Atul Varadhachary, M.D., Ph.D. Blaine Wesner Bill White EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Ann Beeson

We appreciate your past support of the Center for Public Policy Priorities and hope you will join us in sponsoring the luncheon again this year. Mary Alice and Henry Cisneros have dedicated their lives to building community and shaping Texas and its future, which is why the Center for Public Policy Priorities wisely chose them as this year’s Texas Legacies. Mary Alice was elected to the San Antonio City Council in 2007 and successfully served two terms. She has been honored as the Outstanding Democratic Woman of the Year and inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame. In 1988, she was appointed to the Democratic National Committee. During her tenure as a committee member, Mary Alice served as Secretary for the Democratic Municipal Officials for the National League of Cities. Mary Alice currently serves as president of American Sunrise, a non-profit community organization focused on education and re-building communities, which she and Henry founded in 2001. Henry served three terms as a San Antonio City Councilmember, and then in 1981, he became the first Hispanic-American mayor of a major U.S. city. During his tenure as Mayor, he helped rebuild the city’s economic base and spurred the creation of jobs through massive infrastructure and downtown improvements. In 1986, Henry was selected as the “Outstanding Mayor” in the nation by City and State Magazine. In 1992, President Clinton appointed Henry Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Secretary Cisneros is credited with initiating the revitalization of many of the nation’s public housing developments and with formulating policies which contributed to achieving the nation’s highest ever homeownership rate.

Henry currently serves as chairman of the CityView companies, which work with urban homebuilders to create homes priced within the range of average families. Mary Alice and Henry’s dedication to building stronger Texas communities is reflected in the mission of the Center for Public Policy Priorities, a nonpartisan, nonprofit policy institute that works to enhance economic opportunity and address the basic needs of Texas families, including the need for health care and adequate nutrition. As a sponsor of this luncheon, you will honor Mary Alice and Henry’s legacy by supporting the important work of CPPP. CPPP is home to OpportunityTexas, which works to move Texas families from living paycheckto-paycheck toward greater economic opportunity through education, savings, and asset building. CPPP is also home to the Texas KIDS COUNT Project, part of a national network that tracks outcomes for children and makes recommendations to improve child well-being. For the past decade, former State District Judge F. Scott McCown has capably led this work at CPPP. As many of you know, Scott will be leaving CPPP later this summer to rejoin the faculty of the UT Law School as a Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Children’s Rights Clinic. Your support for this event will also help us recognize his outstanding service to CPPP. Please return the enclosed form to CPPP or contact Deirdre Anderson, Development Director, at [email protected] or at 512-823-2865. If you wish to be listed as a sponsor in the event program, we must have your response by November 1, 2013. Please join us in honoring Mary Alice and Henry! Sincerely yours,
