DEFINITIONS AND SOURCES Definitions
Type of data: A (B) indicates that estimates of the migrant stock were based on the foreign-born population. A (C) indicates that estimates of the migrant stock were based on the population of foreign citizens. An (R) indicates the countries or areas where refugees were added to the estimate of international migrants. An (I) indicates the countries or areas lacking data on the number of international migrants whose estimates were imputed.
International migrant stock by age: The mid-year (1 July) estimate of the number of people living in a country or area other than that in which they were born. If the number of foreign-born was not available, the estimate refers to the number of people living in a country other than that of their citizenship. The data are shown for seven age groups: 0-9; 10-19; 15-24; 20-39; 40-64; 60 or over; and 65 or over and refer to countries or areas with 100,000 or more inhabitants in 2010. Data for countries or areas with fewer than
100,000 inhabitants in 2010 are included in the estimates of migrant stock by age of the major areas and geographical regions but are not shown separately. Female migrants as a percentage of the international migrant stock by age: The number of females as a percentage of the total international migrant stock. The data are shown for three age groups: 0-19; 20-64; and 65 or over.
International migrant stock as percentage of the total population by age: The number of international migrants as a percentage of the total population of the country where they live. The data are shown for three age groups: 0-19; 20-64; and 65 or over.
Median age: The age that divides the population in two parts of equal size, that is, there are as many persons with ages above the median as there are with ages below the median.
Percentage distribution of international migrants by age: The number of international migrants by age as a percentage of the total international migrant stock. The data are shown for three age groups: 0-19; 20-64; and 65 or over.

INTERNATIONAL MIGRANTS BY AGE AND SEX MEDIAN AGE OF MIGRANTS
international migrants in the more developed regions are almost 2.3 years older than the total population. In the less developed regions, international migrants are, on average, 7.7 years older than the total population.
Migrants are, on average, older than the total population. Estimates of the number of international migrants by age and sex, available for the first time for every country in the world, indicate that, globally, international migrants are significantly older than the total population. Whereas half of all international migrants are 38.8 years or older, half of the total population is composed of persons 28.4 years or older.
YOUNG MIGRANTS The number of young migrants is relatively small. Globally, there are 33.3 million international migrants under the age of 20, accounting for 15.6 per cent of all international migrants. In comparison, persons under 20 account for 35.8 per cent of the world population. This striking difference results, at least in part, from the fact that the children of international migrants born in the country of destination are generally not considered international migrants.
Migrants in developing countries tend to be younger than those in developed countries. International migrants in the more developed regions have a median age of 42.1 years, whereas the median age of international migrants in the less developed regions is just 33.9 years. International migrants in the least developed countries tend to be younger still, with a median age of 29.5 years.
Most young migrants live in developing countries. Of the 33.3 million international migrants under age 20, 20 million, or 60.0 per cent, live in the less developed regions, while 13.3 million, or 40.0 per cent, live in the more developed regions.
The age difference between migrants and non-migrants is greater in developing countries than in developed countries. On average,
Asia, the most populous world region, also hosts the largest number of migrants under age 20. Asia hosts 13.1 million international migrants under the age of 20, which represent 39.3 per cent of all young international migrants. Europe hosts the second largest number of international migrants under age 20: 7.5 million, representing 22.7 per cent of all migrants under age 20, followed by Africa (5.5 million). MIGRANTS OF WORKING AGE The proportion of migrants of working age is relatively high compared to the total population. Globally, there are 155.9 million international migrants aged 20 to 64, representing 72.9 per cent of all international migrants. In comparison, persons aged 20 to 64 account for 56.7 per cent of the world population. Migrants of working age predominantly live in developed countries. Of the 155.9 million international migrants aged 20 to 64, 97.6 million,
or 62.6 per cent, live in the more developed regions, while 58.3 million, or 37.4 per cent, live in the less developed regions. Globally, females are underrepresented among migrants of working age. Women account for 47.9 per cent of international migrants aged 20 to 64, whereas among all international migrants, the percentage female is 49.0 per cent.
proportion of international migrants among its working age population is Northern America (18.6 per cent), followed by Europe (11.5 per cent). International migrants constitute only a small percentage of the working age population in Africa (2.8 per cent), Asia (1.7 per cent) and Latin America and the Caribbean (1.5 per cent). OLDER MIGRANTS
Among migrants of working age, women outnumber men in developed countries. In the more developed regions, women account for 50.8 per cent of the international migrants aged 20 to 64, whereas in the less developed regions they account for just 43.0 per cent of the international migrants in that age group.
The proportion of older persons is significantly higher among migrants than among the total population. Globally, some 24.7 million international migrants are aged 65 or over, which represents 11.6 per cent of all international migrants. In comparison, persons aged 65 or over account for only 7.6 per cent of the world’s population.
Oceania is the region with the highest percentage of migrants among the working age population. In Oceania, international migrants constitute 20.8 per cent of the total population aged 20 to 64. The region with the second highest
The majority of older migrants live in developed countries. Among the 24.7 million international migrants aged 65 or over, 16.8 million, or 67.8 per cent, live in the more developed regions and 8 million, or 32.2 per cent, live in the less developed
regions. Just half a million older international migrants reside in the 48 least developed countries. Women outnumber men among older migrants both in developed and developing countries. Globally, 56.0 per cent of all international migrants aged 65 or over are female. The proportion of older migrants who are women is higher in the more developed regions (57.3 per cent) than in the less developed regions (53.3 per cent). Europe hosts almost 4 out of every 10 older migrants in the world. Europe hosts the largest number of international migrants aged 65 or over (9.7 million), followed by Asia (6.3 million) and Northern America (5.9 million). In relation to the total number of international migrants, Oceania hosts the largest percentage of older international migrants (17.7 per cent), followed by Europe (13.9 per cent) and Latin America and the Caribbean (12.6 per cent).
