POLICY RESEARCHER AND COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER SOUTHERN AFRICA LABOUR AND DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH UNIT (SALDRU)

SALDRU is the implementing agency for the National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) on behalf of the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME). This project tracks and interviews 30,000 individuals on an ongoing basis and conducts in-person interviews with them at two yearly intervals. The fieldwork is outsourced, but NIDS maintains a staff of around 30. For this exciting project, we require a Policy Researcher and Communications Manager in a contract post (UCT T2 conditions of employment) initially to 31st August 2018 with a possible further 2 year extension. This outreach role is to promote the use of NIDS with policymakers and policy researchers while producing an example working paper. Requirements include: 

A Master’s degree, including training in: microeconomics or development economics plus econometrics or statistics.

Minimum Experience:    

A minimum of two years of experience in economics or social science research. A minimum of one year’s experience in fieldwork surveys. Demonstrated ability to communicate academic research to policymakers. Skilled in STATA or similar statistical package.

Added Advantages: 

Experience working in a higher education institution.

Responsibilities include:     

Joint development of a policy engagement plan with the project Executive team Materials development and presentation of NIDS to policymakers and researchers Publication development in the promotion of NIDS Training coordination and management as defined in in the policy engagement plan Academic authorship of at least one working paper using NIDS data
