Gopher Athletics offers 25 NCAA sponsored Division I sports and participates in the Big Ten and WCHA conferences. The Department's mission reads: To serve as a window to the University in an environment of integrity and equity that enables student-athletes to achieve excellence in their academic and athletic pursuits. Interns will be invited to participate in an on-going athletic department intern development program.

Athletic Communications (three openings) Supervisor:

Paul Rovnak, Associate Director of Athletic Communications

Anticipated Start Date: June 2013 Stipend: $1000/month Term: 12 months Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in related field as a student-assistant or intern. Demonstrated writing and editing skills. Strong attention to detail and an ability to meet deadlines. Knowledge of statistical software programs (Statcrew), website content management systems, layout/design software (QuarkXPress, InDesign, PhotoShop) and social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube). Internship Description: You will be supervised by the Director of Athletic Communications. You will have an initial period of observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will occur on a daily basis. You are expected to ask for assistance when needed. The Athletic Communications staff, led by the director of Athletic Communications, will mentor this internship. All 25 Gopher sports and all aspects of the Athletic Communications Office.

Media operations at home events.

Production of online media guides and printed game programs.

Recording in-game statistics and compiling season statistics.

8.

Weekly reports to the Big Ten Conference.

Internship: Event Management (one opening) Supervisor: Andrew Parrish, Director of Event Management Anticipated Start Date: 7/15/2013 Stipend: $1000/month Term: 10 months Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree Preferred Qualifications: Experience in athletics setting Internship Description: You will be supervised by the Director of Event Management. You will have an initial period of observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will occur on a daily basis. You are expected to ask for assistance when needed. The Director and Assistant Director of Event Management will mentor this internship. A general description of the internship opportunity is as follows: Receive “hands on” learning experiences with: 1.

University of Minnesota athletic events as well as other major events hosted in athletic venues with an emphasis on crowd management, game operations, participant movements, rule and policy creation, staffing, payroll, timelines, and coordination with various athletic department units.

Budget process and management; staff training materials; sport-specific manuals and operations guides.

3.

Relationships with various campus entities involved in the successful presentation of an event. These include but are not limited to parking, police, facilities, land care, alumni association, president’s office.

Facilities—Mariucci and Ridder Arenas Supervisor: Craig Flor – Mariucci and Ridder Arena Manager Anticipated Start Date: July 16, 2013 Stipend: $1000/month Term: 11 months Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree Preferred Qualifications: B.S. or B.A. in Sport Management or related field Internship Description: You will be supervised by the Mariucci and Ridder Arena Manager. You will have an initial period of observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will occur on a daily basis. You are expected to ask for assistance when needed. All aspects of Facility Operations a. Routine facility walk-throughs b. Input and planning for facility improvements/repairs/maintenance c. Building control systems for HVAC, PA, AV and scoreboards d. Observe building operations including custodial daily routine and post-event clean-up e. Key control and security system f. Working with vendors g. Project-related support for major facility improvements

Facility preparation and supervision with a variety of user groups in both ice arenas including Gopher Athletics, Kinesiology classes, Recreational Sports programs, Minnesota State High School League, USA Hockey and other groups and activities.

Athletic Development Intern – Major Gifts Supervisor:

Anticipated Start Date: June 1, 2013 Stipend: $1000/month Term: 12 months Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree Knowledge of college athletics, development, or business. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree Experience with a college athletics department. Internship Description: Learn about the oversight of the capital projects priorities for Gopher Athletics as well as fundraising for studentathlete’s endowments. Learn about strategy sessions, campaign planning and collateral material creation for designated capital project priorities and endowments. Learn to write and edit donor profiles, as well as to plan and schedule donor strategy meetings and personal visits. Observe and learn from the Director of the Annual Fund and the Director of Donor Communications in the formulation and development of the Golden Gopher Fund annual giving program and the development of a strategic Golden Gopher Fund communication plan. Major Gift solicitation for the department of Athletics in particular with Major Gifts Capital project planning and implementation for the department of Athletics. Donor customer service, cultivation and stewardship. Learning the process for estate gifts (testamentary bequests, beneficiary designations, etc), life income gifts (charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trust, etc) and special outright gifts (life insurance, charitable lead trust, real estate, etc). Strategic development of the Major Gift program, including Planned Giving, Capital Campaigns, Endowments. Information Technology - Audio Visual Event Supervisor:

Relevant experience in a customer driven environment. Knowledge of: Setting up and supporting audio-visual equipment. Internship Description: You will be supervised by the Audio/Video Specialist. You will have an initial period of observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will occur on a daily basis. Anticipated Start Date: July 16, 2013 Stipend: $1000/month Term: 11 months Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of or experience in sports marketing, event marketing, and/or in-game promotions, specifically with a University or professional sports team Internship Description: You will be supervised by the Assistant Director of Marketing. You will have an initial period of observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are expected to ask for assistance when needed. The Assistant Director of Marketing and Director of Marketing will mentor this internship. Strategic marketing and promotional planning for sports programs.

Collaborating with affiliated groups including booster clubs, alumni, student groups and other University contacts to help generate awareness and attendance for assigned sports.

Creating great fan experiences though promotions, music, Band, Goldy, and other performance groups that reinforce University of Minnesota “collegiate” brand.

Marketing activities on football game days and other special events.

New Media Supervisor:

Anticipated Start Date: June 1, 2013 Stipend: $1000/month Term: 12 months Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree Knowledge of video production (shooting, editing) Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in broadcasting Knowledge of or experience in motion graphics design/production Internship Description: You will be supervised by the New Media Manager. You will have an initial period of observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will occur on a daily basis. You are expected to ask for assistance when needed. The New Media Manager and Digital Multimedia Producers will mentor this internship. A general description of the internship opportunity is as follows:

Receive “hands on” learning experiences with: 1.

Conceptualization, shooting, editing, production and distribution of video and graphics projects for Gopher Athletics.

2.

Collaborating with other units within department, including athletic communications, marketing/promotions and development, in the production of content that meets department goals and objectives.

3.

Utilizing creative spirit to engage Gopher fans online and in-arena via video and motion graphics projects.

4.

Receiving experience in a state-of-the-art video control room, displaying content to fans at over 100 Gopher home sporting events.

Women’s Basketball Administrative Supervisor:
