AUBcreate Scholarships – Leading UK creative specialist University in global hunt for post-grad creative talent Arts University Bournemouth is launching a global competition aimed at finding the world’s most promising talent in the fields of Architecture, Animation, Film, and Photography. As well as the kudos associated with being named one of the World’s top up-and-coming creative talents, competition winners will be awarded full tuition fee scholarships in applicable AUB Master’s courses, starting in October 2016. The scholarships are open to AUB’s MA Animation Production, MA Film Production (all pathways except Directing), the RIBA accredited MA Architecture (year one only) and MA Commercial Photography. AUB’s Head of International Development, Hilary Colvey said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the next generation of creative talent from around the world to take a significant step towards making that dream career a reality. What is it like being a straight A student..? Do you ever manage to get out of the library? I am not a bookworm by any means! My recipe for success is simple: concentrate and listen carefully during the lectures and seminars and study regularly outside the class and do not leave studying to the last minute. This approach has allowed me to pass the entrance exam to the Dhaka University, where out of 30,000 applicants I was in the top 800 and graduated with the second highest position in my department. Ever since I can remember, I have always enjoyed studying and learning about new things but I could never have imagined that this passion would allow me to get a fully funded scholarship at a UK University.

So tell us how did you manage to secure a fully funded scholarship? I have managed to get the scholarship thanks to a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work! As soon as I had enrolled on my Masters’ degree I started researching the requirements for the scholarship, taking the preparation very seriously as I knew that securing a fully funded scholarship would be challenging and I wanted to give myself the best chance possible. Firstly, I checked the application deadlines and requirements as these will differ depending on the University. My next step was to enrol on IELTS classes to improve my English language skills- a good IELTS score is a must. At the same time I also started to research my study options. I spent quite a lot of time preparing my statement of purpose so that the jury panel could get to know me better and understand who I am and why I am the person who should be getting the scholarship! At the end of April I got an unconditional offer from the University of Chester but it took me some time before this news really sunk in.


How did you adapt to a new lifestyle? Prior to my arrival in the UK, I have never been overseas so I was torn between feelings of excitement and anxiety…. When I reached the immigration desk at Manchester Airport the officer asked me where I was going to study and when I said the University of Chester, he smiled and said that Chester is a really nice place and I will very much enjoy being there. He was right!! I don’t think I could have wished for a better place to learn British culture and history. The University was there to support me at every step of my admission process and made the transition for me as smooth as possible. I was picked up from the airport by the International Welfare team and they took to my accommodation. Being a Muslim it was very important to me to stay in a ladies only accommodation, and I am very thankful that my preference was taken into consideration by the University, my room is located in a house shared by 6 female students. Although, not everything was like in a fairy tale. The first few weeks were challenging, I was away from my family for the first time so I was a little bit home sick. I also had to make important decisions independently for the first time in my life. In Bangladesh, I had a relatively sheltered life, where I could count on my parent’s support and guidance in every matter, but in the UK I needed to make many decisions by myself which I feel has helped me to mature as a person and empowered me as a woman. One thing I had to improve on was my punctuality as British people are quite particular about time keeping. I did not enjoy the winter as I am a sun loving creature, but I must not grumble as I hear the winters would be much harsher if I had studied in Scotland. I was excited though to see snow for the first time in my life. Making new friends and meeting people from all over the world is something that I also enjoy very much as in my country you rarely have a chance to mingle with foreigners and learn first-hand about their cultures.

How did you find teaching and study methods in the UK? All my travel expenses, visa fees, University tuition fees and the living costs are covered by the scholarship as such I am very lucky that I can focus entirely on my studies. In Bangladesh I had to attend classes 6 days a week , and here I attend far few classes but they are very intense and there is a lot of self-study involved so I am spending a lot of time in the library, I also had to exercise more self-discipline as professors expect the students to do the work, but they do not pressure you to studying, if you get low marks you will have only yourself to blame. A student can count on a lot of support mechanisms which are in place – we have weekly drop in sessions where we can discuss any issues or problems with our tutors, the Faculty has also organised special classes where one can learn how to do referencing, how to structure the assignment etc. Each and every piece of coursework can be discussed with the tutor before submitting, so that you can correct any mistakes and make additional improvements to your work. When I was studying in Bangladesh most of my classes were evaluated by exams so I am very familiar with this kind of assessment, but on my course students are required to submit assignments. Surprisingly I find writing them harder than taking exams, they do require more independent research and I needed to develop and master new study skills. My department has been very accommodating and they have allowed me to start my lab work three months ahead of the schedule so that I can have more time to conduct my experiments and get used to new way of studying.

• A purpose-built Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre, which allows for improved quality in patient care and patient safety. • A mock operating theatre, including scrub sinks and theatre lights, and a mock hospital ward so we can study a complete patient pathway. • Specific laboratory areas for Psychology; Physiotherapy; Biological Sciences; Sport and Exercise Sciences.

Our commitment to employability sets us aside from other universities. Recent results show an impressive 95%* of our Graduates gained employment or continued to further study following their time with us. Our well established Employment and Placement Unit (EPU) enables students to find vocationally relevant work experience, industrial placements, volunteer roles, part-time work and graduate employment. We have strong partnerships with employers in multiple sectors including NHS Trusts, scientific industries, charities and health and social care sectors, and we run numerous employer recruitment events on campus and course-related sessions.
