Welcome to the 7th Holmfirth Film Festival "I recall as a young boy being entranced by films like War of the Worlds. I could have stayed in the local cinema and watched films all day. Film changed my life and it can yours.” Sir Patrick Stewart Sir Patrick has enjoyed 55 successful years acting in film and on the stage and is patron of the Holmfirth Film Festival.

Welcome to the 7th Film Festival. Seven days of great films, a chance to meet others and sample some of the cultural triumphs of the last year. Despite increased streaming and changes in the distribution of film, there is still an important role for festivals in highlighting the wonderful films that are produced nationally and around the world but which are often marginalised when it comes to reaching the wider public. We hope you will discover some real gems this year and take advantage of the special offers to sample a range of films and maybe see that film that really affects the way that you see the world, or simply provides great entertainment. We rely totally on the efforts of volunteers and the help of local businesses to put on a festival which requires a great deal of planning and sustained effort. We are also grateful for the vital financial assistance of the BFI, Kirklees and Holme Valley Parish Council. Mike Wade (UK 2016, 35mins U) Local film-maker Mike Wade’s fascinating documentary on the most tragic event in Holmfirth’s history: the bursting of the Bilberry reservoir in 1852 in which 82 people lost their lives. Superb original drawings by Jenny Hinchliffe focus upon the individual human suffering caused by the reservoir owner’s greed and culpable negligence.

Red Ledge's Animals of Holmfirth Film Competition Want to make a short film? We are looking for exciting minifilms on the subject of animals in Holmfirth – in the broadest sense, filmed in any genre/style from documentary from drama, to animation to comedy. Cameras are available for the 20 young people/teams who sign up aged 10 to 16 years old with a crash course in film-making from Dr Simpo. But you can submit your own film made on your own camera as long as it is no longer than 3mins. Details on the festival website. Prizes and the Special Tiger Award donated by Red Ledge for the best films which will be screened on Thursday, 26 May, at the Picturedrome.

Central to Cage’s philosophy, chance will play a large part in the evening in deciding the choice of films and the musical outcomes. The event celebrates the launch of Barry Russell’s new book ‘Everything we do is music.’: Cross-curricular experiments in sound based on the music of John Cage.

Based on newly discovered films of the 1930s pageants in New Mill, the night will premier Tim Copsey’s film, Pageant Tales (UK 2016, 25mins), and live music from Barry Russell.
