Our Client A leading Indian telecom cell tower infrastructure company who construct new cell towers on a regular basis to support their telecom operators.

Why they needed us They wanted to adopt lloT (Industrial Internet of Things) in order to provide their customers with the best experience. In tangible terms that means, better security, less down time, reduced manpower etc.

Existing System The legacy Network Operations Centre (NOC) our client had in place was not able to handle the following challenges. Security • It had difficulty in effectively detecting and preventing theft or tampering Scalability • It was not able to handle the growing amount and types of data. Interoperability • Its various hardware were communicating with different protocols and hence were not integrated. Also, adding new hardware was difficult. Performance and Efficiency • It was not able to effectively monitor energy consumption, wastage, failure and malfunction in real-time • It was not able to seamlessly and efficiently transition between the various power sources like power from the grid, diesel generator and battery power. Safety • It was not able to effectively detect and put out fire break outs which could either be accidental or inten tional.

What we did We came up with a modular solution to handle the above challenges. Modularity helped our client to choose and tailor solutions to cater to their needs. Also, it helps us to add new modules or improve and update existing modules separately without requiring a complete overhaul in order to keep up with the growing needs of our client. We achieved interoperability in each module by using a gateway, capable of integrating with various hardware by offering support for multiple protocols and scalability of each module was achieved by using a cloud infra­ structure, which would handle the storage and processing of various sensor data. The details of the different modules in our solution are as follows. Security Module • This module consisted of security cameras and IR sensors backed by advanced Al software which help detect and document unauthorized access. Such a detection is immediately followed by a customizable security protocol, which consists of a security lock down, triggering of the security alarm and a notification to the appropriate authorities for further action. • This module also included piezoelectric vibration sensors which were installed on high valued assets such as diesel generators, to detect tampering or theft. Such a detection is followed by the above mentioned security protocol. Performance and Efficiency Module This module consisted of hardware capable of smart and seamless switching between different energy sources such as the grid, diesel generator and batteries (charged through solar and the grid). It also consisted of energy meters and sensors to help us generate a comprehensive report on the health of the various power sources. Different optimisations were done on various components of this module and they are as follows. Battery • Thermal sensors were used to detect battery temperature and the ambient temperature was controlled to obtain optimum charge/discharge performance and to ensure longevity of the battery. utlllty grid

Diesel Generator • Fuel level sensors and past usage statistics were used to detect abnormal changes in fuel levels. Such changes could mean theft, though it is unlikely given our extensive security measures. Hence it is more likely, it means that there was a sudden introduction of some inefficiency in the system, which could be because of some malfunction and the same is notified to the appropriate authority for corrective action. • Flow meters were installed at the outlet valve to help detect leakage or other anomalies such as an obstruction in the flow path of the fuel. Such detection was notified to appropriate authorities for corrective action. Fire Safety Module • This module consisted of smoke detectors, combination detectors and video feed processing to quickly and reliably detect fire. In case of a fire, fire suppression systems are engaged which use a multipurpose dry chemical. This is effective against class A, B and C fires.
