WELCOME TO THE VANDUSEN 40TH ANNUAL PLANT SALE 40 Years of Connecting Plants and People Believe it or not, this is the 40th Annual Plant Sale of VanDusen Botanical Garden. This year we are celebrating the volunteers who have produced this Sale for the last 40 years and all of our customers who have made the sale possible by buying our plants. In the original notes of the Plant Sale in 1978, the first Plant Sale Committee decided that the purposes of the Sale were: • Entice members of the community to VanDusen; • Raise money to support the Garden and its programs; • Provide a service by featuring the “special plants” for the keen gardener. Guess what! 40 years later and very little has changed. By offering a free day to the Garden so our customers can easily come and buy plants, we are still able to accomplish all of the above. Thank you to our Park Board partner for ensuring this privilege continues. As we celebrate our 40th Birthday, we want to encourage everyone to enjoy the “tried and true” plants that we sold 40 years ago together with the “new and exciting” plants that are on the cutting edge of horticulture in 2018. Many thanks to over 400 hardworking volunteers who dedicate thousands of hours and all of their gardening wisdom to make this sale such a success. Many have been involved with the sale almost from the very beginning. We are proud to continue our tradition of making a substantial financial contribution to VanDusen Botanical Garden. Thank you for supporting us! Margie Knox, Plant Sale Chair 2018

The Government of British Columbia enacted a law in 1996 to protect three iconic coastal rainforest plants - a tree, a shrub and a perennial: the Western flowering dogwood, Cornus nuttallii, Pacific rhododendron, Rhododendron macrophyllum, and western trillium, Trillium ovatum. The law prohibited actions that would reduce their populations such as removing the plants or picking their flowers, which prevents them from producing seed. The law was rescinded in 2002, however the plants and their habitats are still vulnerable to disturbance.
