Anger Management Group Project What is the Anger Management Group? The anger management group is a 10-week psycho-educational course which aims to help family members who have problems regulating their anger become more calm and controlled. The course teaches participants how to manage their mood through 10 structured weekly two hour sessions. The sessions combine group learning and a range of practical relaxation techniques to help promote a change in angry reactions and disruptive behavioural patterns. The group is joint facilitated by Dr Gary Shepherd and Dr Jane Cronin-Davis who specialise in anger management within both clinical and forensic settings.

Who can join the group? You are eligible to attend the anger management group if you are a family member; either a parent, a child (over 18 years old) or a relative who lives with a family under the same roof. If you are an estranged parent with the prospect of reunion (and controlling your anger is a stipulation of being reunited with your family) then you are also eligible to join the course. You must also be a willing participant in the group and have a genuine wish to change your behaviours through engagement in the process. The course is useful for family members who display a range of angry behaviours including: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Shouting Being confrontational Losing one’s temper Verbal abuse Hitting inanimate objects (doors/walls etc.) Going red in the face with anger Blacking out Damaging objects Being passive/aggressive Sulking/not talking to others Being extremely moody Having angry thoughts Being generally calm but having periods of extreme anger now and again

The course is not suitable for family members who display physical or sexual violence towards other people.

What will I learn in the group? Working in a group can be a very powerful way to help change your habits and behaviours as well as being an effective way to receive support and encouragement whilst on your anger management journey. The group is designed to teach you about yourself, where your anger originates, how your body reacts to anger and how you can change your angry reactions using specific anger management techniques.

How do I access the group? Clients can refer themselves to the group or be referred by their GP or other professionals. A member of the team will contact you to in the first instance and invite you into the University Clinic for an assessment. At the assessment, you will have the opportunity to find out more about the group and both you and the team will discuss if the group could benefit you.

Researching Anger Management The anger management group is also a research project run by Dr Gary Shepherd and Dr Jane Cronin-Davis. The project aims to study how family members who have anger-related issues change their behaviour through participation in anger management programmes. After the anger management course finishes the research team will submit the findings of the project for publication in an academic journal. It is important to understand that when you enrol on this anger management course you will also become a research participant. In this project, being a research participant will involve completing a weekly questionnaire that charts your mood (the questionnaire is filled in before the session begins) and also involves talking about how your mood has been in the last week (this will only take you a few minutes and is tape recorded each week). You will also be asked to complete a questionnaire in week three and in week 10 (this questionnaire charts your ability to selfregulate your mood). As a research participant, you have a number of protections to your anonymity. York St John University has a strictly regulated code of ethics which all researchers adhere to and ensures that: • • •
