2017 Ralph E. Hollmon Laptop Award DESCRIPTION OF AWARD The Ralph E. Hollmon Laptop Award acknowledges high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to use their talents to serve Milwaukee and the broader community. Financial need is not a criterion for this award.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must: 1. Be a graduating high school senior who resides and attends a high school in Milwaukee County 2. Have a cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 3.0 3. Show proof of acceptance to an accredited college or university for Fall 2017 enrollment The following applicants are NOT eligible to apply:  Students who are recipients of the 2017 Milwaukee Times Newspaper Black Excellence Louvenia Johnson Scholarship.  Students whose parents/guardians are members of the Awards Selection Committee, employees of the Milwaukee Urban League or members of the Milwaukee Urban League Guild and/or Milwaukee Urban League Young Professionals.

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS A completed and signed award application form, essay, record of extracurricular activities, resume, two letters of recommendation and official transcripts mailed to our office in a sealed envelope.

SELECTION PROCESS The Awards Selection Committee will determine award winners based on the following factors: GPA, academic progress, essay, letters of recommendation, work history (if any), school activities, leadership and community involvement. Decisions of the Awards Selection Committee are final. Winners will be notified via U.S Mail. Awards will be presented at the Milwaukee Urban League’s inaugural Transition-to-College Conference and Awards Luncheon.

Application Instructions NOTE: When an application is received, it will be given either a “complete” or “incomplete” status. It is your responsibility to call and check on your status. Any incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the Award Selection Committee. 1. Complete all sections of the application form, including applicant’s signature and parent(s) or guardian(s) signature. 2. Prepare and type a 250-word essay addressing the following: “Imagine that you are the director of admissions at a highly selective college. In addition to an excellent academic record, what one factor will help you determine whether to admit an applicant? Please explain why. The essay:  must be an original piece of writing demonstrating your critical thinking ability and showcasing your writing at its best. It should also provide insight into the type of student you currently are and are poised to become.  must be double spaced, in Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font with your name and contact information in the top right corner. 3. An official copy of your transcripts in a sealed envelope must be mailed to the address below. Electronic copies of transcripts or transcripts that are not official will not be accepted. No exceptions. (Cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher is required) 4. Two recommendation letters. One of which must come from a teacher, guidance counselor, school principal or other official school administrator. The second may come from an employer, supervisor, coach, mentor or advisor. (Family/friend references are not acceptable). 5. Complete form for Extracurricular Activity, Community Involvement and Leadership. On a separate sheet list awards and honors, computer skills, and special interests (if applicable). 6. Submit a resume (if applicable).
