Peter Stone, DDS Associate Professor of Clinical Dentistry, USC School of Dentistry. Dr. Stone has an appointment in the Section of Behavioral Dentistry, where he is the course director for the Geriatric Dentistry Rotation, the Geriatric Dentistry Selective, the Special Patients’ Selective and the Hypnosis Selective. Dr. Stone has taught the techniques and dental applications of hypnosis since 1981 for the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis. He was an “Approved Consultant in Clinical Hypnosis” for the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis until year 2000. Dr. Stone has practiced in Beverly Hills for more than thirty-four years.

Gary Wood, PhD Clinical Assistant Professor, Division of Diagnostic Sciences, USC School of Dentistry and Clinical Associate Professor, USC School of Social Work. Dr. Wood has published extensively in dental journals and authored several books. He is a recipient of The 2003 Clark L. Hull Award for Scientific Excellence in Writing on Experimental Hypnosis, presented by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Dr. Wood is also affiliated with the National Association of Social Workers, the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis and the Southern California Society for Clinical Hypnosis. Synopsis Dental applications of hypnosis include relaxation; relief of fears and anxieties; reduction of perception and severity of pain during and after procedures; control of bleeding and salivation (increasing and decreasing); maintenance of position for lengthy procedures (catalepsy); heightening patient motivation, control of gagging, adjustment to new prostheses; control of bruxism and other habits; and promotion of oral hygiene. This workshop course offers supervised practical experience aimed to assist modern dentists to comfortably use hypnosis in their dental practice. Introductory lectures will be followed by demonstrations and videos of the subjects discussed. Each participant will have the opportunity to practice newly learned skills under supervision.
