July 2015

We report from the year’s big industry event Utilities 2050: Building for the Future – how leaders and thinkers are mapping out the next steps for the pipelines industry P8

A blueprint for success Matthew Rowlatt , Chairman As the Pipeline Industries Guild enters its 59th year, I am honoured to be one of a long line of people to have the privilege to preside over such a wellstructured and successful organisation. I have been involved with the guild for quite a number of years and have always been impressed with the professionalism, enthusiasm, friendliness and support I have experienced. The diversity of the Guild allows us to continue learning from each other and helps maintain our member base. We also look to continue increasing our membership and your feedback becomes crucial to ensure we keep attracting new members which, in turn, increases the network available to us all. It is a delight to be taking over from John Ineson. The many initiatives under his leadership demonstrate the value membership brings and underline the dedication and professionalism we’ve experienced not only from John, but from our long line of past chairs. They’re a tough act to follow and I hope to ensure that success continues. This year we will be revamping our website to match the ever-changing world, ensuring we are up to date with social media opportunities. We’ll also review the awards and look at where we can open that up, to increase participation of our members. We have a good calendar of events and I would like to thank our many speakers, sponsors and organisers who manage, somehow, to find time within their busy day jobs to provide us our learning and networking opportunities. That just leaves me to say thank you to the members, the many panels and committees, the board and Flowline Ltd for supporting me in my year as chair of the Guild.

State-of-the-art facility aims to help improve inline inspection

Burdens, a Wolseley UK Limited company, has found a unique way to help fuel a customer’s passion for motor sport

Burdens, a leading supplier of products and services to the infrastructure, civils and utilities markets, has found an innovative way to help one of its long-term customers. Phil Reed of East Coast Construction (NE) Ltd is a long-term Burdens client who is also a racing enthusiast. He owns and manages East Coast Racing, a team that champions

Burdens: sponsors of East Coast Racing upcoming motorsport star ‘the General’ Lee Johnston. When Graham Price, branch manager at Burdens in Leeds, became aware of the adrenalinefuelled sideline, he helped to devise a creative approach to Phil’s rebate agreement.

A winning partnership He said, ‘Phil’s commitment to East Coast Racing is inspiring.

Statoil’s smart move

When we became aware of all that he does for the sport, in his own time, we were keen to show support, which is why we agreed part of his rebate agreement could go towards funding the team this season.’ Phil said, ‘It was fantastic that they were able to be flexible and allow me to use my rebate agreement and add the Burdens logo on to our kit this year.’

Smartplug offers 24/7 monitoring

TD Williamson’s SmartPlug isolation technology helps energy giant perform major platform-to-pipeline tie in Statoil Petroleum AS recently chose TD Williamson’s SmartPlug® isolation technology to safely isolate a North Sea inline isolation. The 89-day isolation was undertaken to facilitate the tie-in of Statoil’s new Valemon platform to its Huldra-Heimdal pipeline. The tie-in necessitated a fairly complicated isolation operation, for which Statoil turned to pipeline maintenance equipment supplier TDW. The SmartPlug isolation method provides a proven double block and monitor isolation that would prevent flooding during the operation.

Five-month gain ‘The DNV GL-certified SmartPlug isolation method allowed production from Huldra to continue for an additional five months,’ said Atle Halvorsen, TDW project manager.

GSM success story In addition to the production gains, the SmartPlug isolation technology was distinctive for its extensive use of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) monitoring. GSM delivered several tangible benefits to Statoil, including: n reliable, real-time, 24-7 monitoring from TDW’s Stavanger control center n reduction in manpower: on-site monitoring personnel and associated platform crew no longer required n reduced risk and cost associated with on-site personnel

THE Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) has opened its new Technology Development Centre in Houston, Texas, with the aim of improving inline inspection performance. The centre’s opening on July 15 was preceded by a ‘dress rehearsal’ in June that saw global pipeline solutions provider T.D. Williamson joining technology providers and PRCI members to perform multiple pull-tests. T.D. Williamson completed three tests, pulling a 16-inch cleaning pig once and a 16-inch inspection tool that combined deformation and magnetic flux leakage (DEF+MFL) capabilities twice.

Safety and integrity Chuck Harris, T.D. Williamson’s Manager for Strategic Commercialisation, says the centre will address key issues around safety and integrity, particularly in regard to inline inspection (ILI). ‘The TDC pull-test facility will initially be utilised to help industry understand the current state of ILI technology,’ he said. ‘Access to pipe containing complex defect geometries and configurations will help identify potential gaps in existing technologies, and may be used to help develop service provider technology advancements.’ PRCI president Cliff Johnson said the centre would be a key asset for the pipeline industry.

A second Guild event turned the spotlight on Gas Sector Opportunities in Emerging Europe Running concurrently with the utilities conference, Gas Sector Opportunities in Emerging Europe was a must-attend seminar for companies with an interest in energy and utilities in Central and Emerging Europe. To give some background, the modernisation of the energy sector in the nine markets of Emerging Europe is a major opportunity in the region for UK business. Countries are upgrading existing facilities, diversifying their overall mix and modernising grids at a time when their energy demands are increasingly significantly (an expected 30% growth in demand by 2030 compared to the OECD average of just 4% (BP Energy Outlook). The region is a

significant recipient of EU funding (€100m+). One-to-one meetings A visiting delegation from Central and Emerging Europe provided information on regional opportunities in energy and infrastructure, and outlined how the network of British embassies can support companies and assist in expanding UK business in the region. Speakers included Paul Taylor from UK Trade & Investment; David Archer of Petroceltic; and Kostadin Sirleshtov from CMS Cameron McKenna. After the seminar, UK companies had one-to-one meetings with regional delegates and commercial officers from Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania.

It’s going to be the last blast of the summer and, as you can imagine, I will be doing everything I can to pick up some tickets for the Rugby to go in a raffle (well here’s to hoping!) to raise money for our chosen charity which will be CAP – a charity that helps people deal with the most severe personal debt problems. You can find out more about them at www.capuk.org.  ‘I would also like to thank profusely the Energy Institute Technical Group, my employer, for supporting me in this endeavour. My pipelines work for the institute, carried out by committees of experts who I manage, concerns the safe transport of carbon dioxide gas, and a comprehensive study of failure rates on pipelines in the North Sea called PARLOC. Says Brent Windsor: ‘I intend to carry on where Bob Murray left off and continue his great work in maintaining support and encouragement for our thriving YP network. ‘My main aim this year is to maintain relationships with our existing members and recruit new members by reminding them of what the Guild stands for, and the benefits of Guild membership.’

How safe is your pipeline?

Speakers at a recent P.I.G. Onshore Panel seminar looked at some of the current security challenges the industry is facing, and offered useful solutions Did you know that malicious damage and illegal hot-tapping are becoming increasingly widespread in the UK and abroad? An excellent turnout at a P.I.G. event at Belgrave Square, London, suggested more and more people in the industry are becoming concerned about this issue. Fortunately, the one-day event on 19 May offered many excellent solutions, addressing head-on the

issues and challenges in protecting pipeline plants.

Raising security Onshore Panel chairman Matthew Sumerling introduced the day’s events, which kicked off with ‘Raising security awareness in an uncertain world’ by Roger Cartwright from DHSC Ltd. Other talks included ‘An operator’s perspective’ by Jonathan Anstee de Mas from ExxonMobil; ‘Hot

tapping: the story so far’ from Clare Phillipson at Fisher German; ‘Using simulation-based training to improve pipeline safety’ by John Anderton from DNV GL; and ‘The challenge of pipeline theft detection’ by Orod Karchani Gomez de Aranda from Atmos International.

Networking opportunities The event also included a coffee break and lunch, which

provided plenty of networking opportunities and a chance to look at sponsors’ exhibitions from Atmos International, DNV GL, Murphy, and PII Pipeline Solutions. ‘I found the event very informative,’ said Peter Claxton from Fisher German LLP. ‘I am involved with oil pipelines on a daily basis and it was interesting to hear from companies who are actively trying to increase pipeline security through advances in technology, as well as hearing how some of the systems work that are in use across the UK pipeline network. These events provide a valuable opportunity for various areas of the industry to get together to discuss these issues and, hopefully, learn from each other’s experiences.’

Branch&Panel News Scottish Branch

A fine year

Reflection on a successful 12 months and anticipation of upcoming events were on the agenda at the Scottish Branch AGM The Scottish Branch AGM on 24 April was hosted once again by DNV GL in their new offices on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The meeting opened with Rob Graham thanking the committee members for their support and hard work throughout the past

year. Rob continued by stating that he felt the committee had done the Branch proud in ensuring a successful year with numerous successful events, especially given the difficult climate. Special thanks were given to Ian Hepburn for his commitment to the Guild

as Branch secretary and Bill Sykes, past chair, for his support throughout the year.

Upcoming events Moving into 2015-2016, Rob Graham has agreed to stay on as the Scottish chair, Les Dickson took on the post of

deputy chair and Bill Sykes is the new secretary. The committee is looking forward to the Annual Golf Event to be held on 20 August at the Royal Burgess (see Diary, page 16) and the Technical Lunch taking place in Edinburgh on 9 October.

The 2015 Aberdeen Dinner on 17 April at the Chester Hotel was a great success with extremely positive feedback both during and after the event. After-dinner speaker Bruce Fummey entertained the audience with anecdotes and excuses as to why he turned up in ‘full kilt regalia’, but without the

kilt. (It should be noted he was wearing a pair of jeans instead!)

Charity fundraising The nominated charity was Sensation ALL, a local body that provides play and sensory activities for children and young people with multiple support needs. The evening followed a

tour of The Control Point Facility, a unique asset integrity system that combines technology and expertise to ensure pipelines are built right first time, every time Gillian Glennie and Chris Booth of Subsea 7 deserve a huge amount of credit for all of the effort that they put into making the event work so well.

Talking the talk

Guest speaker Rhead Group’s David Faulkner

Midlands Branch guest speaker David Faulkner offered invaluable advice on communication and team development in the workplace On 11 June, the Midlands Branch hosted a ‘soft skills technical event’ at Rhead Group, Coventry. Guest speaker David Faulkner discussed how to ‘Keep the Learning Burning’ by offering practical support to develop core soft skills. These included use of language; behaviour and relationships; and adding

tangible value to individuals in a positive, focused way

Engaging learning David specialises in communication, presentation, team development, and management and leader development, and is passionate about delivering engaging

learning that supports people and organisational development. His learning and development experience includes 12 years in the private, public and charitable sectors including retail, travel, housing, infrastructure project management, professional services and social service charities.

Great ideas: they come in cycles

What are ‘marginal gains’ anyway? Sir David John ‘Dave’ Brailsford, who was a performance director of British cycling and is currently general member of Team Sky, had this to say about the philosophy he championed. ‘The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike, and then improved it by 1%, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together.’

Optimal performance Durig his presentation, David used a number of great examples from cycling coach Sir David John Brailsford, principally his technique for applying marginal gains to team-based scenarios (see panel). ‘You can achieve optimal performance by the aggregation of marginal gains,’ said David. ‘It means finding a 1% margin for improvement in everything we do’. The event included a buffet and a technical Q & A, and also offered guests plenty of networking opportunities.

but a safe and fun time was had by all. Line honours went to Cheetham Hill Construction, with Finning in second place and Fisher German third. Organiser Peter Jellis of Radius Systems is looking forward to organising next year’s competition –the 13th time he’s been in charge.
