VACANCY AT WESSA Tourism Blue Flag Node Co-ordinator Fixed Term Contract Cape Town - based WESSA, one of South Africa’s leading Environmental NGO’s is implementing a high-profile project through a partnership with the South African National Department of Tourism (NDT) and the EPWP programme. The aim of the Tourism Blue Flag Project is to focus on improving services and adherence to the Blue Flag criteria at 50 selected beaches across the country. This is being achieved through employing 200 community members from low income households in all 3 of the participating coastal provinces. The Beach Stewards have received training in Environmental Education Training and Development Practices and are now actively carrying out activities on their beaches and communities in the final year of the programme. A vacancy now exists for a 10 month period in the Western Cape node which stretches from Cape Town to Mossel Bay. The WC Node Coordinator will oversee approximately 60 participants deployed on 20 Blue Flag beaches in the area. Extensive travelling throughout the node will be required. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS INCLUDE: • •

Implement the project according to contracts and agreements with NDT and internal planning requirements. Effective project administration which includes attendance tracking, setting work schedules and monitoring progress, and maintaining quality control and compliance of field operations. Implementation of HR requirements and processes. Mentoring, support and supervision of beach stewards. Profile project work in such a way that it raises both the project’s and WESSA’s profiles. Build new and strengthen existing stakeholder/partner/host organisation relationships. Actively plan, engage and participate in environmental education events and action campaigns. Assist the National Coastal Coordinator with Blue Flag inspections in the Western Cape.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION: • • • • • •

Tertiary qualification in a field related to WESSA’s core business i.e. Environmental Sciences or Environmental Education. A qualification in the eco-tourism or hospitality fields would be an added advantage. Previous project coordination experience with specific focus on EPWP programmes, coastal management, environmental education and mentoring, or tourism Ability to speak English and at least one other African language (written and spoken). Be prepared to travel extensively due to the training and mentoring aspect of the role. Valid driver’s license essential, competency driving assessment will be undertaken
