elcome back to Northwood Park this evening, and we are pleased to see all our supporters new and old, and also extend our welcome all connected with AFC Dunstable; we trust they enjoy their stay with us and have a safe journey home later.

Last season’s meeting here was the final game of a very disappointing season for the Woods, but it was a fixture that AFC Dunstable went into knowing that only a victory would maintain their hopes of a play-off place in their first season at this level. Louis Bircham – now in AFC Dunstable’s squad – fired the Woods ahead on 38 minutes, before Dunstable levelled the scores midway through the second period, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Results elsewhere meant that the visitors couldn’t have made the play-offs even had they won, but the shared spoils meant that it had been an incredible sixteen matches since the last Northwood victory – which represents the worst ever run in the club’s history. Our results have continued to be a mixed bag – I seem to be writing that almost every week – but that’s probably the product of having such a young squad of players, aligned to the constant stream of different wearers of the number one shirt; nine this season at the last count! The last three outings have exemplified the switchback nature of the Northwood season so far – an excellent performance to beat a good side in Hartley Wintney 3-1 in the last game here just before Christmas was followed by a less impressive showing at Hayes and Yeading on Boxing Day, where two well-taken goals from Mahlondo Martin couldn’t prevent the home side from winning 4-2. Hayes and Yeading are playing on their home ground for the first time in several years, but it was surprising to note that even now the stadium is nowhere near completion, and I suspect that could be years away. And on Saturday we took a point from a creditable 2-2 draw at Egham Town, with Wilson Chingoka and Mahlondo Martin getting on the mark. We are quickly back at Northwood Park, with Arlesey Town being the visitors this Saturday; kick-off is 3.00 p.m. as usual, and we hope to see you all again then!

ood evening and welcome to Chestnut Avenue for this Evo-Stik League fixture. We welcome our friends from AFC Dunstable and trust they enjoy their short stay here.

I don’t go to any other club where the Chairman mans the turnstiles, but it happens here quite often. As before, I will address all of our issues here, as I am determined to push this club forward, on and off the pitch.

Firstly, all of us at the club wish all of the ‘Woods’ family a belated but very Happy New Year. It’s a time when many will make resolutions, whilst others are going through more difficult times; some of whom have long associations with the club or are relatives of those who have given us tremendous service over the years.

“ I don’t go to any other club where the Chairman mans the turnstiles“

We think of those, not just today, of course, and hope the New Year will bring them good fortune and strength. That’s my sentimental part over with. I’m going to be brutally honest here with my assessment of our performances on the pitch; naive, too many individual errors and a lack of commitment in my opinion from certain individuals. All of this means one word; inconsistency. That sums up our season. I read lovely words from Hartley Wintney about our club, our facilities and our team and then three days later, predictably, we play below par again at Hayes & Yeading. Of course, everyone is doing their best, but there are reasons why we are where we are and these need addressing.

Yes, these notes may seem a little harsh, however, as always, everyone needs to know that matches don’t just happen; there’s a lot of hard work to make them happen. But in the meantime, the Club Secretary will continue to print team sheets, pump up footballs, set up the tannoy system and put out the corner flags, whilst the Chairman deals with all the other duties. New Year. Same situation here. If you’ve read this far, maybe you can help? Enjoy the game. Up the Woods!

MANAGER

SIMON LANE

G

ood afternoon everyone and welcome to Northwood Park for tonight’s rescheduled visit of AFC Dunstable.

Our visitors arrive with hopes of reaching the play-offs, if not the title, after a very strong year last season and an excellent start to this campaign. For our part, we go into the game out the back of a mixed holiday period with an excellent win, a loss lacking in energy, and a creditable draw that should have been a win. Consistency of selection has been an issue for me all season long. Some of this is the nature of the business and where we are….injuries, unavailability and turnover due to the building and understanding of the players in the squad. I am hoping for a stable period in the future. We have been very depleted and not having fortunes to

4

address that immediately is challenging for all concerned. However, as usual I have been working hard using my contacts I’ve developed in the past and calling in favours to strengthen us. So I hope to be able to get consistent selection from one game to the next for the first time this season very soon. Enjoy the game tonight and wrap up warm! Up the Woods!

WELCOME TO

AFC DUNSTABLE

A

FC Dunstable started life as Old Dunstablians Football Club in 1981. The name Old Dunstablians originated from an organisation formed in 1888 for old boys from Dunstable Grammar School. The club started in the Dunstable Alliance for a couple of seasons then moved onto the Luton District and South Bedfordshire League in 1983. Success was limited with the 1st team runners up twice in Division One and runners up in the William Pease Cup. They did land the Bedfordshire Junior Cup beating Leighton Athletic on penalties in 1989–90. The club were promoted to SSML Division One for 2009-10 season and finished a very creditable 5th in its first season. History was made in 2010-11, as the team was accepted to participate in the FA Vase. A fine run through to the 2nd Round Proper was achieved. Looking to improve on the league position the previous season, the team went all out for promotion and finished runners up in the league and gained promotion to the Premier Division at their 2nd attempt. The SSMFL Division One Cup was secured as well. Now with the team in the SSMFL Premier Division and entry into the FA Cup for 2011-12, finished a fine 3rd in the league. 2012-13 the team consolidated in the Premier Division and finished a respectable 8th. Their

run the FA Cup saw them get through three rounds eventually going out to Northwood after a replay. After the team being managed by the most successful pair in the club’s history Alex Butler and Dermot Butler, they decided to step down after 9 years at the helm half way through 2013-14. This left the team in disarray, which saw many stalwarts of the team leave. The club decided to appoint current manager Steve Heath and the club went on a re building exercise. 2014-15 saw the team secure third place in the SSMFL Premier Division as they challenged for the title all season. They also equalled their best run in the FA Vase getting to the 3rd Round proper. 2015-16 was the season that the team broke all club records. Before clinching the SSMFL Premier Division title, they progressed through 2 rounds of the FA Cup before finally going out to Ryman Premier leaders at the time Leiston 1-0 in the 1st Qualifying Round. The FA Vase was a great ride as the team made it to the 4th Round proper. They drew phoenix club Salisbury who had competed in the Conference Premier only two seasons previous but had been demoted to step 5. Going out 3-0, www.northwoodfc.com

Salisbury made it all the way to the semi-final. The league campaign was an unbelievable roller coaster ride. As the season got underway, it was becoming apparent that quite a few teams were vying for the title. As the season reached October, only five points separated the top six. By Christmas it looked like London Colney were starting to break away going five points clear. The chasing pack were bunching up behind as only six points was the difference between 2nd and 7th. When the team lost to a last-minute penalty to Biggleswade United on January 2nd, we went eight points behind London Colney and it looked like the title ambitions had faded. That would be the last time they tasted defeat in the league. Hoddesdon Town were now becoming a title contender and it was a three horse race. With seven games left, the team went top of the league and never looked back and won the title by 13 points. Last season saw AFC Dunstable compete in the Southern League Central Division for the first time. They only missed out on a play-off place at the last game of the season. The team though did pick up some silverware winning the prestigious Bedfordshire Senior Cup 2-0 against Dunstable Town at Kenilworth Road.

The Players JAMIE HEAD – GOALKEEPER

Jamie has returned to AFC Dunstable, after a couple of seasons with them as a youth player. Tall and agile keeper, he has plenty of Southern League experience.

BRETT LONGDEN – DEFENDER

Brought into the club in November from St Ives Town, Brett started his career with Luton Town. Loaned out to Maidenhead, he then moved to Arlesey Town. Last season he was at Chesham United and the previous term at St Neots Town.

JAMES BISHOP – DEFENDER/MIDFIELD

Played for the club’s Under 18 team a few seasons back, then broke into the 1st team. He had a season at Barton Rovers in 2015-16 but returned to the club last term. A combative player who is comfortable at right-back or in midfield.

BILL MORGAN – DEFENDER

Bill is an elegant centre half, who has been coveted by many clubs since joining AFC Dunstable midway through their SSMFL championship winning season. He never seems to get flustered and is always cool on the ball.

RYAN FRATER – DEFENDER

A highly experienced player, who has many clubs to his name. A great signing for the club this season, as he picked up a championship medal for Royston Town after the club won the Evo-Stik Southern League Central last season.

LEON CASHMAN – DEFENDER

Leon has been dogged by injury over the past few months and is currently recovering from an operation on his ankle. A tall inspiring centre half, he is vice-captain of the team, having joined in 2014.

TERRY GRIFFITHS – DEFENDER

A no-nonsense centre half who defends as if his life depends on it. Joined the club in 2015 after moving to the area from Essex.

DANNY MURPHY – DEFENDER

Former Northwood player Danny is in his second season with the club. An elegant left back with a sweet left foot, he has an abundance of experience at Southern League level, Danny has also turned out for Slough Town and Aylesbury.

NEWMAN CARNEY – DEFENDER

Joined AFC Dunstable on a month’s loan from Dunstable Town at the beginning of 2014 but decided to stay with the club. An ex professional with Luton Town when he was 18, he was one of the youngest players to score for the Hatters.

OLLIE COX – DEFENDER/MIDFIELD

Ollie is a young player who can either play as a wing-back or in midfield. Transferred from Kings Langley in the middle of October, he had a brief spell with the club last season and also spent time at Hemel Hempstead Town earlier in his career.

MOSES OLALEYE – MIDFIELD

An inspiration to all his players, the skipper leads by example. Originally with the club in 2010, he left for pastures new but returned in 2014. Moses has an array of winning medals with AFC Dunstable and other clubs. As

 6

Northwood v AFC Dunstable

captain, he has picked up the SSMFL Premier title, Bedfordshire Senior and Premier Cup trophies.

ROY BYRON – MIDFIELD

Roy is in his third season with the club, after arriving from Hillingdon Borough. A manager’s dream, as never late for anything.

CHRISTIAN TAVERNIER – MIDFIELD

Another player who has spent time at Luton Town, he was signed this season, after five years at Arlesey Town, where he was a regular goalscorer. A tall elegant player, the club have high hopes with Chris.

TOM SILFORD – MIDFIELD

Spent most of last season on loan at SSMFL club London Colney. Turned out to be a very good option for Tom, as they won the Premier Division. Another player who came through the youth system.

ADIEL MANNION – MIDFIELD/FORWARD

A skilful quick winger, we acquired Adiel from Berkhamsted at the beginning of last season. Settled in pretty quickly with his new team mates and will be looking to build on his first season at a higher level.

JERMAINE HALL – FORWARD

Last season was exceptional for Jermaine, as he ended up top scorer in the league with 30 goals and picked up the Golden Boot. Joined the club in 2015 and will be hoping to add more goals this season.

STEVE HEATH - MANAGER

Steve joined the club midway through the 2013-14 season, and he guided the team to a mid-table position in the SSMFL Premier Division and handed many youngsters 1st team debuts. 2014-15 season saw him re-strengthen the side which saw AFC Dunstable finish 3rd in the league. The following season the club went all out to clinch the Premier Division title and success was achieved. Last season saw Steve’s and the club’s first attempt at step 4. A very respectful 7th place was secured and the Bedfordshire Senior Cup was won. At the beginning of this season, a 2-0 win over Luton Town saw him lift the Bedfordshire Premier Cup.

STEVE JACKMAN - ASSISTANT MANAGER

Steve came into the club at the start of the 2014-15 season. After many seasons as a player with Bedford Town, illness meant he had to retire. A very infectious character, he combines his Assistant Manager job with spotting any talent coming through our youth system.

ENZO SILVESTRI - ASSISTANT MANAGER

Enzo came into the club mid-way through the 2014-15 season as a player. He soon took up a coaching role and is extremely popular with the players; Enzo now runs the Under 10 Saturday Whites team.

MATT LANGSTON - 1ST TEAM COACH

BJ CHRISTIE – FORWARD

Matt had a very impressive non-league playing career. He turned out for many Conference clubs, and was made famous for a day when he scored the only goal for Histon v Leeds United in the FA Cup which Histon won 1-0, which was televised live on ITV.

NATHAN FRATER – FORWARD

It would not be an understatement to say that Bianca must be one of the best Sports Therapist in the league. With qualifications of Sports Therapist BA (Hons), her knowledge for such a young person is quite extraordinary.

The clubs all-time record goal scorer with over 200 goals to his name. First turned out for the club at 15. Has had a couple of spells away from the club with Barton Rovers and Berkhamsted but always returns. Nathan signed for AFC Dunstable at the beginning of a season. A proven goal scorer at step 3 and step 4.

BIANCA HEWER - SPORTS THERAPIST

LOUIS BIRCHAM – FORWARD

Birchy joined the club in September, after a loan period from Kings Langley. A skilful and tricky player, spent many seasons at Leverstock Green. Last season he was at Northwood.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS .... 2017 ALAN EVANS Though we showed plenty of improvement from August onwards, the year of 2017 will go down as the worst for the Woods in the past decade with just two away wins all year (compared with 14 away wins in 2016) and the fourth Hayes & Yeading United goal on Boxing Day being the 100th goal conceded in the full year. We also scored the least goals in a year during the decade and our top scorer for 2017 failed to get into double figures for the first time since keeping these records. As you can see, one huge disappointment during 2017 was the fact that every cup game ended in defeat which also meant that we played just 47 in matches during the year, the least number of games in a year again since these records were kept. We have not won a cup game since a League Cup success over Slough Town in November 2016. As far as our league record is concerned, we won just one of the first twenty-two league matches of 2017 so the other seven victories have all come from the last twenty games to show that there has

8

been considerable improvement but not to the standards that we expect here at Northwood. Of those eight wins, surprisingly only one of them has been by the narrow margin of just one goal – our 2-1 success over Fleet Town at the end of October thanks to the late strike from Tayshan Hayden-Smith. The biggest victories of 2017 were:

Sequences The best winning sequence was the four games that the Woods won between the 21st October and the 4th November which also included one of those rare away wins while the worst losing run was the eight successive defeats that we suffered between 21st February and 1st April which also included three of those biggest defeats names above. We almost equalled that though in the five weeks in September and October when we lost seven on the bounce. Clean Sheets

The fourth goal in Woods’ biggest win of 2017 flies into the net

The Woods kept just six clean sheets in the 47 games played. Two of them came last season, both with Borja Loeches-Teixeira in goal while the four this season have seen Brendan Hazlett keep three of them while the other was with Harry Voss in goal. THAT WAS 2017 So, Jermaine Osei, who has only played 11 games for the Woods, takes top spot as the year’s top scorer having netted nine times. He also recorded the only Northwood hat-trick during the year when he bagged all three goals in our 3-0 success over Aylesbury United. The previous lowest total for goals in a calendar year came back in 2010 when Scott Orphanou scored 10 goals. Previous top scorers by year have been as follows: Year

EGHAM TOWN NORTHWOOD

2 2

SATURDAY 6TH JANUARY 2018 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH RUNNYMEADE STADIUM

Northwood overcame a patchy second half performance to salvage a draw on a sticky surface at the Runnymede Stadium, writes Robin Piper. Woods were immediately on the attack in the opening minute with Osei finding space to get a shot on target but ex Woods goalkeeper Aaron Bufton made a comfortable save. At the other end, Hall made a timely intervention with a well-executed tackle to deny Brendan Matthew as he looked to get on the end of Matt Wood’s through-ball. And the hosts threatened again as they had an appeal for handball against Comas turned down as the Northwood ‘keeper collected a long ball over the top on the edge of his box. Having survived a couple scares, Woods began to gain the upper-hand. Bufton was called into action again to deal with a Wilson Chingoka header, while Martin picked out Osei who sent a fierce volley wide of the target. And Northwood deservedly took the lead on 20 minutes as Harry Newman made progress down the left flank before threading a perfectly weighted pass through to Chingoka, who delivered an emphatic finish for his fourth goal of the season. Egham were quickly on the attack as they looked for a response to falling behind, Woods blasting over from a good position before former Northwood man Louis Stead headed wide from a Matthew cross. But Northwood continued to look dangerous on the break with Osei directing a header straight at Bufton following Martin’s hanging cross to the far post. The hosts were looking increasingly dangerous as they delivered a strong finish to the opening period with the lively Woods being denied by a last-ditch Lewis Ochoa tackle before the Sarnies’ striker was almost in on goal again but was crowded out by the Northwood defence. At the other end, McDonnell did well to find Martin in a dangerous position but Lewis Cole was on hand to divert the danger for Egham. Woods made a change at the break with Isaac Olurunfemi replacing McDonnell in the right wing-back position. And the visitors had some defending to do as they conceded a couple of early corners. But Northwood’s vulnerability to the set-piece was exposed as Stead flicked on Lewis Cole’s corner for Woods to head home to restore parity on 48 minutes. And Woods went close to adding another as he flashed a shot wide of the far post after good work from Stead. Northwood were struggling to get a grip on proceedings but a rare moment of cohesion involving Chingoka, Olurunfemi and Osei created an opening for Martin but he was crowded out by the Sarnies’ rearguard. And Egham upped the pressure with a series of attacks, Comas producing a point-blank save to deny Woods, while the latter dragged another shot narrowly wide of the target. In between, Stead rattled the Northwood crossbar with a fierce drive. The hosts continued to press and Callum Webb and Rhys Paul tried their luck with long range shots which failed to seriously trouble Comas in the Northwood goal. Woods made a change on 69 minutes with Newman making way for Romelle Alomenu. And Osei went close for Northwood as he shot narrowly wide after being set up by Martin. However, Northwood were made to rue that miss after sloppy defending allowed Woods to send over a cross for Matthew to bundle the ball home to give Egham the lead on 74 minutes. And Matthew went close again as he stung Comas’ fingers with a fierce shot. Woods made another change as they looked for a way back, Nebay Haile replacing Ochoa with the visitors switching to a flat back four. And Haile’s introduction paid dividends as he was involved in Woods’ equaliser with four minutes remaining, the substitute initiating the move before Osei played in Martin who shot beyond Bufton. And Northwood spurned a glorious chance to take all three points in stoppage time as Martin crossed for Osei, but with the goal at his mercy a cruel bobble meant the Woods striker failed to make any contact to ensure that that the honours remained even.

HAYES & YEADING 4 NORTHWOOD

2

TUESDAY 26TH DECEMBER 2017 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH BEACONSFIELD ROAD

he Woods were unable to follow up Saturday’s impressive victory as they failed to hold onto T an early lead against play-off hopefuls Hayes & Yeading in a Boxing Day clash in front of a surprisingly low crowd, writes Alan Evans. Once again Manager Simon Lane had to bring in a goalkeeper; the ninth of the season, for this tough derby match as Brendan Hazlett and Xavi Comas, who had made his debut a few days earlier, were both away for Christmas. In came youngster Matt Nolan on dual registration from Enfield Town. Brad Hewitt returned to the defence so David Taylor pushed back into midfield to replace Wilson Chingoka after he reported ill that morning. There was plenty of action straight from the start with Harry Newman getting in an early cross which was cut out at the near post by Hayes’ keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle while Matt Nolan was soon called upon to keep out more of a direct effort from out wide by Toby Little. But the Woods then took a prompt lead when Lewis Ochoa slipped a fine ball down the left channel which put former Hayes winger Mahlondo Martin in between two defenders down the middle and he finished in fine style to make it 1-0 to Northwood. It raised the confidence of the Northwood side and on 13 minutes another good ball released Newman again down the left and when his cross eluded two home defenders, it perhaps caught Martin by surprise at the far post as he wasn’t prepared for a shot at goal. Instead he played it across to Tayshan Hayden-Smith who set up Isaac Olorunfemi for a shot which took a deflection but was still comfortably saved by McKenzie-Lyle. Hayes & Yeading were still looking dangerous as well, with Little causing problems on the left. The home side then pulled themselves level after 20 minutes as a ball into the box led to a flurry of legs and when two Northwood defenders were unable to connect to clear Hayes’ top scorer Manny Duku was able to flick a shot into the roof of the net. Suddenly United were on top and ex-Woods striker Ismael Ehui was next to go close as he found space for a powerful strike that was straight at Nolan but the young keeper still did well to keep it out. On 35 minutes the home side benefited from a couple of deflections that went their way and Laste Dombaxe had a clear strike at goal but Nolan was across to push it wide once again. But on 44 minutes Ehui played a ball wide to Little, and he drove in a cross which Lewis Hobbs tried to cut out but only succeeded in diverting inside the near post to leave Nolan stranded and Hayes & Yeading in front. Northwood struggled to threaten after the break, and Nolan had to make another block to deny Duku after a good through-ball from Ola Olajubu. It took until the 64th minute for the Woods to make a dangerous move and it was Martin who provided it as he left Dombaxe trailing as he raced into the box. He cut the ball back to the edge of the area but Taylor was arriving just too late and the ball was cleared. Northwood hopes were finally snuffed out after 78 minutes when Frank Keita latched onto a through-ball and was then caught by Hobbs just inside the box with the Referee pointing straight to the spot. Duncan Culley tucked the spot-kick away to make it 3-1. It got worse for Northwood five minutes later as a poor clearance was returned quickly by Priestly Farquharson and when the bounce was misjudged by Hobbs, Duku was onto it in a flash to place a shot beyond Nolan and make sure of all three points. Nolan showed his shot-stopping prowess again early in stoppage-time as he pushed wide a strike from Keita and then the Woods countered and grabbed a consolation when Martin was put through wide on the right by Hobbs and he cut in to finish well for his second of the game. There was still a late opportunity for Duku to complete his hat-trick but he sliced his shot wide of the target and the game came to an end with a 4-2 scoreline.

THE FIRST MEETING

22nd September 2012 Northwood 1 AFC Dunstable 1

A replay was required to decide who would progress through to the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round after this heated and physical encounter finished 1-1 at a sunny Chestnut Avenue. The Woods were looking for an early goal and they got exactly that; a short corner resulted in an exchange of passes between Walker and James McCluskey and the midfielder showed decent composure tucking the ball away neatly from inside the penalty area after six minutes. Even though Northwood had gained the early advantage they were dealt a reminder that Dunstable would pose a threat further up the field and a dangerous inswinging free kick only just evaded the arriving attacker who had momentarily lost his balance. Then the passing football from Meakin’s side came to the fore as McCluskey found John Christian, and he played an inch perfect cross field pass for Adamson Ajayi, though the winger drove over the bar. However, AFC Dunstable threatened when Jason Blackett controlled a cross well, and hit his effort having been given time on the edge of the box, although it was easy enough for the home goalkeeper Reading. Up the other end, and there was some urgency from Northwood as they carved out one opening after another. Christian, McCluskey and Ajayi were linking effectively and the latter was the recipient of a gorgeous, inventive ball in and behind the Dunstable defence but fortunately it ricocheted off Ajayi after he had got the better of Sam Leggett, and on this occasion he couldn’t keep the attack alive. Following a corner, McCluskey went for his second goal of the game but his curling effort cleared the left upright; then Olly Hawkins – now at Portsmouth – did well to create a goalscoring opening and it looked destined to find the bottom corner once he hit his effort except it beat the ‘keeper and the post.

Then the momentum shifted in an instant. A ball in and behind saw captain Reece Yorke and Blackett become tangled and the striker went down about 25 yards from goal. The referee then made a contentious decision – displaying no hesitation - to show the defender a straight red card after deeming it a ‘clear’ goalscoring opportunity even though it was debatable as to whether Yorke was the last man. The hosts would have to play the remainder of the tie with ten men, a tall order to say the least after losing their influential centre half. The direct free kick forced Reading into a save as he had to parry the ball behind. As the saying goes, this affair was a tale of two halves. Northwood had seen the majority of the play in the first half and may have felt they should have gone in further in front, though AFC Dunstable were benefitting from playing against a team a man light, and they made that count. For long periods in the second forty five minutes, Northwood were under the cosh and that was demonstrated immediately as Scott Raper showed athleticism to race back and clear a header off the line from Blackett that had Reading wrong-footed, and would have levelled the scores. The pressure was coming from all angles and inevitably it forced an equalising goal. A clever through ball sliced open the Northwood defence, but full credit must go to front-man Bernard Christie, who steadied himself and then belted an unstoppable driven shot high in to the net that left the goalkeeper with no chance. 1-1 with fourteen minutes remaining. In the closing stages Spencer Bellotti was cynically tugged to the floor just as he was about to shoot, and the referee pointed to the spot. It was Woods’ chance to claim a place in the next round, but visiting keeper Sam Leggett dived to save Christian’s poor penalty, and it would be back to Creasey Park for a midweek replay. Northwood: James Reading, Adamson Ajayi, Ryan Phillips, Lee Grant, Reece Yorke, Scott Raper, John Christian, Craig White, Olly Hawkins (Spencer Bellotti), James McCluskey (Jack Hutchinson), Romaine Walker (Danny McDonnell) AFC Dunstable: Sam Leggett, Wayne Mills, Luke Little, Danny Ryan, James Baldry, Steve Hawes (Dale Turney), Jason Blackett, Gareth Harnaman, Bernard Christie, Graham Clark, Lee Burgoyne. www.northwoodfc.com

NORTHWOOD

HARTLEY WINTNEY 1

SATURDAY 23RD DECEMBER 2017 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH NORTHWOOD PARK

t was a tale of two penalties as Northwood avenged their season opening trouncing in Hampshire IManager with a win over Hartley Wintney in an entertaining affair at Chestnut Avenue, writes Robin Piper. Simon Lane had to reshuffle his troops once more as he was without the services of

influential skipper Brad Hewitt and goalkeeper Brendan Hazlett. There was a welcome return for Tom Gilbey who lined up alongside David Taylor and captain for the day, 17 year old Lewis Hobbs, in a three-man defence with debutant Xavi Comas between the sticks. The visitors were quickly into their stride with a series of attacks, Jake Baxter going close before Comas was called into action as he got down well to turn Josh Webb’s low shot around the upright after Northwood failed to clear a corner. Baxter was prominent once again as he sent over a teasing cross but Callum Eagle sent his header into the side-netting. Having survived the early pressure, Woods began to ask questions of their own, Newman with a surging run and cross which was gathered by goalkeeper Chris Harris before another sweeping move saw Newman set up Tayshan Hayden-Smith, who shot into the arms of Harris. Hartley threatened again through Baxter following another incisive break but his close-range shot was charged down by Romelle Alomenu. And Northwood immediately counter attacked to open the scoring on the 15 minute mark, Hayden-Smith latching onto Harris’ poor clearance to tee up Newman who delivered an emphatic finish. Things got even better for Northwood as they increased their lead on 24 minutes. Wilson Chingoka’s long-range shot was parried by Harris but had enough momentum for the ball to cross the line. However, the visitors deservedly reduced the arrears with a goal on 27 minutes as Callum Eagle finished with ease following a cross to the far post. The play was now flowing freely from end to end, Callum Eagle going close once more while at the other end, Hayden-Smith saw his rasping volley deflect past the upright following good work from Newman. And the latter was involved again as his goal-bound shot deflected for a corner. Northwood continued to press with a strong finish to an entertaining first period, Webb blocking Newman’s shot on the line after the latter combined well with Mahlondo Martin. Woods began the second half as they ended the first as they continued to threaten the Hartley rearguard, Martin latching onto Newman’s hanging cross but heading wide. However, the visitors were presented with a golden opportunity to draw level as they were awarded a penalty after Paul Hodges was upended by Hobbs just before the hour-mark but Comas produced a superb save to deny Dean Stow from the spot. The disappointment only seemed to spur Hartley on as James Tennant went close before Liam Eagle shot narrowly wide. At the other end the lively Martin shot wide of the upright before the same player drew a save from Harris. Northwood continued to search for the goal to make the game safe, with Martin sending a curling shot just past the post. And Woods’ formational fluidity was in evidence again as Ochoa moved back into midfield with Isaac Olurunfemi assuming the right-back role. The visitors were looking increasingly dangerous, as Baxter, Webb and Paul Hodges all threatened, but the Northwood rearguard stood firm. And Woods were able to breathe more easily as they were awarded a penalty four minutes from time as the tireless Newman was caught by Callum Eagle, Martin seeing his penalty saved by Harris but making no mistake with the rebound. Kojo Gyimah was introduced for Martin as the clock ticked down and Montella almost added a fourth, but was denied by an offside flag as he bore down on the Hartley Wintney goal, bringing the curtain down on an impressive Northwood display.

Alan Evans looks back at Northwood events of a decade ago PHOTOS by JAMES BROWN

T

oday we continue with our popular feature where we look back to events here at Northwood Park from exactly a decade ago. This has meant a review of our first season back at Step 4 of non-League following the first-ever relegation in the senior club’s history as we succumbed to the drop in our second season of Southern Premier Division football having been transferred across following two years of Isthmian Premier competition.

After a slow start to the season, there had been an upsurge in fortunes. Firstly a series of solid home wins was followed by a brilliant FA Trophy replay win over Isthmian Premier side AFC Hornchurch and then the first away league win of the season, a 3-1 success at league leaders AFC Sudbury with 18-year-old Elliott Buchanan

changing manager and a whole host of players in recent weeks. And after the Woods had made a reasonable start to the match, the visitors took the lead after 20 minutes with a deflected strike from Michael Brothers. Although Northwood went close to levelling, Mitch Swain needed to make a couple of important stops before the break to keep it down to just the one goal deficit at half-time. But just five minutes into the second-half the impressive Adrian Abramian equalised with a low shot into the bottom corner and from there it seemed just a matter of time before the Woods would go on and win the game. Abdul Yoki went closest, firing against a post but the winner finally came after 74 minutes and it was route one stuff with Swain’s kick sending Abramian through on goal and steered a shot past the ‘keeper. Later chances went astray but it was still a much-needed three points. A week later Northwood travelled to Ware for a game that was played in ludicrous waterlogged conditions. It was a shock that it was passed fit to play and the Woods were clearly not up for it as they found themselves two goals behind inside 76 seconds. Yes, that’s right just 76 seconds!

netting his first Northwood hat-trick, taking his tally to six goals in three games and into double figures for the season; the boy was getting noticed. The FA Trophy run finally came to an end with a narrow 2-1 defeat at AFC Wimbledon in front of a crowd of over 1,500 where the Woods, through Buchanan, had caused a real scare with the opening goal in the very first minute. Now it was time to try to climb the table. The Woods had a great chance to get back to winning form in the League as they began December with a home game against bottom club Wivenhoe Town, though the Essex side had responded to a poor start to the season by

26

Bradley Hewitt slipped and it was 1-0 after 12 seconds as Chris Ellerbeck netted. Then there was still time for the Woods to kick-off, lose the ball, allow Scott Neilson to shoot against

TEN YEARS AFTER the post and Paul Burton put in the rebound. Conditions actually got worse and Adrian Abramian had an effort cleared off the line but after 25 minutes prolific striker John Frendo latched onto a long ball and fired home for a third and it was pretty much game over. It stayed that way until half-time and when Abramian pulled a goal back on 53 minutes it raised hopes briefly. The Woods striker had a header well saved shortly afterwards but then was surprisingly substituted. Ware added a fourth on 74 minutes with the best goal of the game though and it was another defeat for Northwood on their travels.

Buchanan swooped with a shot that Peacock was unable to keep out despite desperate attempts. The following Saturday it was back at home for the visit of Waltham Forest and there was a starting debut for John Christian in place of Simeon Howell in the centre of midfield after he had joined from Wealdstone. The Woods were suddenly in full form for this one and equalled their best ever Isthmian League score as they powered their way to a 6-0 victory.

Two days later Northwood started their first-ever defence of the Middlesex Senior Cup with a home game against the newly formed Hayes & Yeading United – the Woods had beaten Hayes in the Final back in April – and their Conference

South opponents would have been looking for revenge. And when the visitors took the lead after just twenty minutes through a Stafforde Palmer penalty, following a foul on Palmer by Bradley Hewitt, it looked like going that way. But Northwood worked hard to get back into it and had a penalty of their own which Elliott Buchanan had saved by ‘keeper John Peacock. However, he shrugged that off soon afterwards as the Woods were awarded another penalty and this time Buchanan tucked it away. It was all-Northwood in the second-half which saw the return of Danny Murphy after a long spell out with injury and what proved to be the winning goal came on 73 minutes when Abramian’s shot came back off a defender and

The two in-form strikers were too hot to handle and after just ten minutes Adrian Abramian played a good ball into the path of Adrian Abramian and he slotted coolly past goalkeeper Jason Willis. Abramian then latched onto a ball from Ryan Tackley to extend that lead on 24 minutes before Tackley netted the third direct from a free-kick that flew over everyone and into the top corner from distance. It was 4-0 before half-time after Danny Hart’s free-kick caused havoc in the area and Bradley Hewitt poked in from close-range. It was less exciting after the break and Forest went close through Lloyd Opara but a fifth goal came Northwood’s way on 70 minutes as substitute Danny Murphy picked out Abramian at the far post and he fired home for his second of the game. Then, after 83 minutes, Buchanan jinked his way past his marker to round Willis and fire into an empty net to complete the scoring. The Woods were finally nearing halfway up the table and we will have more from everything Ten Years After in our next programme. www.northwoodfc.com

Ollie Hogg broke the deadlock to give the Ducks the lead seven minutes into the second half from the penalty spot, only for Max Webb to equalise within two minutes. But Jack Wood popped up 5fiveminutes from time to earn the Ducks a crucial win. Hartley Wintney are eighth, but have games in hand and won 2-0 at home to Bedford Town. Rowan Vine broke the deadlock 2 minutes after the break and Paul Hodges made sure for the Hampshire side 20 minutes from time. Bottom-markers Arlesey Town picked up only their eighth point from twenty-four matches in a 0-0 home draw with Fleet Town, while there was an important win for Barton Rovers, who moved up to fourth-bottom after beating Chalfont St Peter 2-1 at Mill Meadow. Charlie Jones gave last season`s playoff finalists a 16th minute lead that Jimmy Hartley quickly doubled 3 minutes later. All the Saints could muster in response was a last-minute Ben WardCochrane effort. www.northwoodfc.com
