elcome back to Northwood Park this afternoon, and we are pleased to see all our supporters new and old, and also extend our welcome all connected with Arlesey Town; we trust they enjoy their stay with us and have a safe journey home later.

Arlesey had far better of the exchanges between the two clubs last season, winning both Southern League fixtures with 3-0 scorelines. This time around, though, was better from the Woods’ point of view; we played at Arlesey back in August, and first half goals from Meshach Williams and Mahlondo Martin gave us a 2-0 interval lead. The home side pulled one back through Elias Moses, but Evans Kouassi’s stoppage time goal made sure of the points. Late Thursday afternoon brought the shock news that manager Simon Lane had been poached by our divisional rivals Egham Town, and he resigned his position in order to take up the reins of the Surrey club. So much for the plans for his Northwood project, which would see young players developed, brought through and guided forwards in their football careers; half a season and Simon is gone. It’s such a pity, as there was plenty of excitement around the club when the campaign got underway just 24 games ago. Still, I expect that his #NorthwoodRising hashtag will quickly reappear as #EghamRising… Simon’s last game in charge turned out to be Tuesday’s home fixture with promotion-chasing AFC Dunstable, which features a stirring fightback from a two-goal interval deficit to take a point from a 2-2 draw with the second-placed outfit. The visitors went ahead after just five minutes, extending their advantage a similar period before the interval. But three minutes after the restart top scorer Jermaine Osei collected a cross from Lewis Hobbs and turned to shoot home. Northwood’s equaliser arrived on 81 minutes when Mahlondo Martin crashed home a great free-kick, and was well deserved on the second half showing. Thanks for your support here this afternoon! Our next Evo-Stik League South, East fixture is also here at Northwood Park – we take on Barton Rovers here next Saturday, 20th January; kick-off is at 3.00 p.m. as usual. We hope to see you then!

ood afternoon, and welcome to Northwood Park to our visitors Arlesey Town for this Evo-Stik League South fixture.

I’ve had to rewrite these notes just before publication deadline due to Simon Lane’s shock decision on Thursday afternoon to resign from his post as Northwood manager, just half-a-season into the long-term project which we agreed. And on top on this, on Friday morning I entered the clubhouse to discover that we had been burgled following a darts match the evening before. It never stops here, let me tell you, so as I await the arrival of the police, these notes are not as lengthy as I would like and I shall write more for the website next week. However, I will say that Simon and I have had a couple of chats lately to address a few areas where I felt we needed to improve and I had nothing but positive signs from him to suggest that he was still in it for the long haul and that we were building something for the future. So I was completely shocked to receive this news. It was especially disappointing that I had a good conversation with my fellow Chairman at Egham on Saturday, and all the while he was clearly plotting this move to recruit our Manager.

stock and think about how to go about finding a permanent replacement. In the meantime, enjoy today’s game and get behind the lads as they go for those three points! Up the Woods!!

CLUB MATTERS

ALAN EVANS All change on the playing front and 50 up for the season It wasn’t quite the plan at the start of the season but for various reasons, we have had to cast the net far and wide this season in respect of registering players for the first-team. Goalkeeping issues early on meant that we have now played nine different players between the sticks with Spanish-born Xavi Comas the current holder of the gloves after coming in to replace Brendan Hazlett when he went away for the Christmas period. We started of course with exTottenham ‘keeper Harry Voss with us on loan from Bishop’s Stortford but he was badly injured in training and we then fielded a string of stopgaps including Mohammed Ayoubi, Montel Joseph, Borja Loeches-Teixeira, Brannon Daly and the ill-fated Andrew McCorkell (two games, got sent off, gave away a penalty and conceded seven in one game!). Matt Nolan also ably stood in for Hazlett on Boxing Day. But it’s not only in goal where we have seen changes and we have also had our share of centre-halves! Anyway, there were two new players making their debuts at Egham Town last Saturday with Tyler Hatherly joining the Woods from Hertford Town having been part of their side that was promoted from the Spartan South Midlands League last season after London Colney turned down their chance at a higher level. The second was Matt Hall who has signed on a dual-registration basis from National League South side Hemel Hempstead Town. A former Watford youngster, Matt had a year north of the border with Ross County before returning south last summer. Those two meant that no less than fifty players had made an appearance for Northwood this season and

4

Northwood v Arlesey Town

on Tuesday night that tally reached fifty-one as Mark McLeod was drafted in on dualregistration from Harrow Borough for his debut. Of course this means that many players have also moved on and the last two of these have been in the past two weeks. Tayshan HaydenSmith had been pretty much an ever-present since the start of the season and had picked up several Man of the Match awards for his hardworking midfield role but he has now taken up an offer to join Isthmian Premier side Merstham where he made his debut as a substitute at Leatherhead on Wednesday night as they lost 2-1. Then, on Thursday we transferred our second top scorer Mahlondo Martin to league rivals Chalfont St. Peter in a sidewise move that is always frowned upon; more for just a little more to cover expenses. Having finally found some goalscoring form which had seen him score five times in our last four games, it is very disappointing that a player chooses to move on to start afresh once again at a new club. Evans Kouassi of course left the club almost two months ago now following our defeat at AFC Rushden & Diamonds. He joined our National League South neighbours Wealdstone but unfortunately injury has ruled him out ever since but hopefully he will get back to playing soon. We do still hold his registration if he needs some game time. That same Rushden game also saw us lose impressive left-back Pat Adamson to a broken leg and we are all hoping that he will be able to return to the squad in the weeks to come. The aim of course is to have a more settled side as the rest of the season progresses and one that we can then build on for next season but

in the meantime, I will no doubt be kept busy with arranging for players to be signed-on or transferred up until the deadline at the end of March! FA Vase Memories For those older Northwood fans, the FA Vase always conjures up fond memories of victories past at Sudbury Town, AFC Sudbury, at home to Braintree Town and of course away at Durham City. It’s been a long time since we played in the Vase – 1999/2000 when we were beaten 2-0 at Chippenham Town; who went on to lose in the final – but the latest competition has reached the Fifth Round stage and for once there is a fair bit of local-ish involvement for games being played on Saturday 3rd February 2018. Leighton Town were relegated a couple of years ago back to the Spartan South Midlands League and they have done well top reach this stage where they travel to play West Midland League side Wolverhampton Sporting Club. Tring Athletic are a second Spartan South Midland club still in the competition and they are away to Western League outfit Melksham Town. One-time giants Windsor FC switched from Combined Counties to the Hellenic League this season and have an aged strike force of ex-professional Barry Hayles and ex-Northwood players Kieran Knight and Riccardo Cannon with over 100 years between them! The Royalists play at home to Wessex Leaguers Hamble Club. Two other Hellenic sides are still in there too. Bracknell Town have a replay to get through against Wessex League side Blackfield & Langley but should they win they will be away to either Newcastle Benfield or Coleshill Town while Thatcham Town are at home to Midland League club Bromsgrove Sporting. Other Hidden tables We may all get to see where we currently sit in the East Division table but there are always other tables available which give a different perspective of how we at Northwood FC are doing! The current attendance table, published by the Evo-Stik League, shows the league based on average attendances and after our lowest attendance of the season on Tuesday night against high-flying AFC Dunstable, the Woods dropped to ninth place in that one with an average of 117 at present. Our top league attendance so far was 243 while the lowest crowd is now just 71. As they do in the League table, AFC Rushden & Diamonds lead the way with attendances too, currently averaging 482; some 253 more than second-placed Bedford Town. Chalfont St. Peter and today’s visitors Arlesey Town are currently joint bottom with an

average of just 83. The League also produce a far-play table each week which takes into consideration cautions & dismissals throughout the season and the Woods are currently 10th best in that table while today’s visitors Arlesey Town are well ahead of us in 4th place, some fourteen points better off. Joint leaders now are Aylesbury United and Cambridge City with Hanwell Town in third. Finally, we can also view the “Respect Awards” table, sponsored by the Football Factory. Points can be picked up in each game for behaviour of Club officials & team benches, Dressing Rooms and Hospitality shown to Officials while at the club while deductions are made for dissent cautions or dismissals due to Foul & Abusive language. Barton Rovers are well ahead at present (despite not winning a home game all season so far) some 42 points ahead of AFC Dunstable in second place. Again Arlesey Town are doing well in fifth spot while we have slipped down to sixteenth place having played a lot few home games than most other sides where the majority of points can be gained. The next update should provide us with a better position. Programme goes Digital ONLY You should be aware by now that if you are reading these notes in the programme, you are almost certainly reading it on your phone, tablet or on a PC screen as from the new season we are no longer producing a paper version (apart from the one-off for Aylesbury United a while ago). The League changed their rules this season to state that the need to produce a programme for each match no longer had to be a printed version and for lots of reasons, we made the decision to end it. The quality of the programme should remain much the same though and to download it will now be free so savings all round. It also makes it more available to everyone. We have already had a massive increase in downloads of people reading the programme. You can either download it in a format that is easy to read or to print it out yourself at home should that be your preference. We hope you will embrace the change and enjoy it. However, we are aware that some people would prefer it to remain a printed edition and indeed, we even received an offer from one of our loyal and regular supporters to cover the losses that the club makes when producing a printed version. So, we will consider it further over the rest of the season but please let us know what you think, either in person at a game or by email to the club email address [email protected]

CLUB MATTERS Under-18s – Progress halted by the weather The Under-18s have seen a series of postponements and have not been without a game for the past five weeks. They are due to be back in action this Wednesday night when they play away at Hayes & Yeading United in another Sportswik Isthmian Youth League fixture. Their next home match is scheduled for the following week when Wealdstone are the visitors. Both games kick-off at 7.45p.m. Groundshare – London Tigers FC Likewise, the Tigers had a series of postponed games too but returned to action last week with a home league game against St. Margaretsbury which they lost 0-3 and they have now dropped to fourteenth in the table having also lost 4-0 at Hadley in midweek. Their next home game is scheduled for Tuesday week, 23rd January when they play Edgware Town who are managed by ex-Woods defender Fergus Moore and include former Northwood manager Mark Burgess in their line-up at the moment. Kick-Off will be

at 7.45p.m. so why not pop down for that one. Northwood season ticket holders get admission for half-price. And finally….. It’s a New Year. Could this be the year that a few of the people reading this step up to the mark and volunteer to make Northwood FC the community club that we would all like it to be. As always we have vacancies for several roles at the club that would help us to raise our profile and our professionalism. The first-team would still like someone to manage the kit, getting it transported from club to away games and setting it out in the dressing-rooms both home and away. Meanwhile the club itself still needs a group of people who could turn their skills to fund raising in many different forms. Without these roles being successfully, we will always be limited as to how much we can progress. I was pleased recently when Robin Piper offered to return to the club as it’s Match Day reporter after a long absence when I’ve had to fill in with that in addition to my many other roles. Is it now time for you to step up?

WELCOME TO

ARLESEY TOWN

A

rlesey Town Football Club celebrated their centenary in 1991, having been formed by a group of local people before the turn of the last century. The club initially played in the Biggleswade & District League, before joining the Bedfordshire County League in 1922. They left the league in 1926, but returned for a single season a year later. They subsequently played in the Parthenon League, before joining the London League in 1958. After leaving the London League in 1960, the club became a member of Division One of the South Midlands League in 1961.

In 1982-83 the club moved to the United Counties League, winning the Premier Division two years later. Rising costs forced Arlesey to resign from the United Counties League, moving back to the South Midlands League in 1991. 1994-95 saw the club win the league with a record 107 points, and they then bettered this achievement by beating Oxford City in the final of the FA Vase at Wembley Stadium. The Blues’ fifth South Midlands League championship followed in 1999-2000, and Arlesey were promoted to Division Three of the Isthmian League. Their first season in this new division was a success with the club losing just two matches in the process of winning the

8

Northwood v Arlesey Town

title, scoring an Isthmian League record of 138 goals with a record 100+ goal difference and earning promotion to Division Two. In 2006 the club were moved transferred to Division One North of the Isthmian League, before being transferred back to the Midland Division of the Southern League in 2008. In 2010-11 the club won Division One Central of the Southern League, earning promotion to the Premier Division. In 2011-12 the club reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time, where they lost 3-1 at Salisbury City. They repeated the feat the following season, losing 3-0 to Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena. The campaign finished on a knife edge as Arlesey missed out on the Premier Division play-offs by a single point. Although promotion was narrowly missed, the Red Insure League Cup was won in a two-legged final against Frome Town. But the club had a change of management, in November 2013 Rufus Brevett arriving to take them forward. Although his first season was steady, the following year was very difficult, and 2014-15 saw several changes of management as results failed to materialise. Brevett gave way after Christmas to ex manager Nick Ironton but again this failed

to halt the slide and he in turn left during the season, with Zema Abbey and brother Nathan returning as joint managers. Although this led to an improvement in playing style but they were unable to prevent relegation back to the Central Division. Last season saw Arlesey struggle to get to grips with the style of the new division and early form resulted in them propping up the division but a second half resurgence saw Town push to finish in a midtable position.

NORTHWOOD

AFC DUNSTABLE 2

TUESDAY 9TH JANUARY 2018 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH NORTHWOOD PARK

orthwood displayed all their battling qualities as they recovered from a two goal deficit to N record their second 2-2 draw in four days against high flying AFC Dunstable, writes Robin Piper. Woods welcomed back Tom Gilbey to a defence still missing Brad Hewitt while skipper Lewis Hobbs

was deployed at right-back. Former Harrow Borough midfielder Mark McLeod was brought in for his Northwood debut, with Lewis Ochoa and Jack McDonnell missing from Saturday’s draw at Egham.

Dunstable have been in excellent form in recent weeks, unbeaten in nine games coming into this match, with eight wins taking them up to second in the table and their confidence was in evidence from the first minute as top-scorer Jermaine Hall shot narrowly wide with a 20 yard effort. At the other end, Harry Newman was quickly into the action as he created an opening for Jermaine Osei but the Woods striker dragged his shot wide of the far post. The game had set off at a frantic pace and the opening goal was not long in coming. As Northwood looked in vain for an offside flag, Hall and BJ Christie combined to set up Drew Roberts for any easy finish with five minutes on the clock, to continue the experienced striker’s excellent scoring record against Northwood. Newman was seeing plenty of the ball and another burst down the left flank lead to a teasing cross to the far post but there was no red shirt to apply the finish. And Newman was linking well with Mahlondo Martin as the latter twice got the round the back of the Dunstable defence but was unable to deliver a decisive final ball. Despite enjoying their fair share of possession, Woods were struggling to create any clear-cut chances and it was the visitors who were threatening to add to their lead. Woods keeper Xavi Comas was quickly off his line to deny the advancing Christie as he looked to latch onto Hall’s throughball before the unmarked Terry Griffiths should have done better as he almost got on the end of Newman Carney’s floated free-kick into the box. Dunstable continued to threaten and Roberts went close to grabbing his second goal of the evening with an audacious long-range attempt which shaved the post with Comas beaten. However, the visitors were finally rewarded for their efforts as they increased their lead on 41 minutes, Griffiths heading home unchallenged as he got on the end of Carney’s corner – although there was feeling the ball might have gone out of play before arriving on the defender’s head. Northwood required a good start to the second period if they were going to find a way back into the match and their wish was granted as Osei executed a smart shot on the turn to reduce the arrears on 48 minutes following Hobbs’ low cross into the box. Despite a scare when Hall went close for the visitors, Northwood were growing in confidence with a succession of attacks and Osei was denied by keeper Jamie Head, who produced a couple of smart saves to keep his team in front. Northwood maintained their second half improvement and deservedly drew level on 81 minutes after they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Dunstable box. Martin stepped up to take the free-kick which beat Head at his near post for the Woods striker’s fifth goal in four games. Dunstable almost immediately regained the lead as they broke quickly into the Northwood box but Comas was on hand to produce a smart save to deny Hall. lsaac Olurunfemi and Nebay Haile were introduced for Wilson Chingoka and Newman respectively to add some fresh legs for Northwood in the closing minutes. But it was Comas who was called upon to deny Hall once again in stoppage time to ensure that Woods deservedly took a share of the spoils.

EGHAM TOWN NORTHWOOD

2 2

SATURDAY 6TH JANUARY 2018 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH RUNNYMEADE STADIUM

orthwood overcame a patchy second half performance to salvage a draw on a sticky surface N at the Runnymede Stadium, writes Robin Piper. Woods were immediately on the attack in the opening minute with Osei finding space to get a shot on target but ex Woods goalkeeper Aaron

Bufton made a comfortable save. At the other end, Hall made a timely intervention with a wellexecuted tackle to deny Brendan Matthew as he looked to get on the end of Matt Wood’s throughball. And the hosts threatened again as they had an appeal for handball against Comas turned down as the Northwood ‘keeper collected a long ball over the top on the edge of his box. Having survived a couple scares, Woods began to gain the upper-hand. Bufton was called into action again to deal with a Wilson Chingoka header, while Martin picked out Osei who sent a fierce volley wide of the target. And Northwood deservedly took the lead on 20 minutes as Harry Newman made progress down the left flank before threading a perfectly weighted pass through to Chingoka, who delivered an emphatic finish for his fourth goal of the season.

Egham were quickly on the attack as they looked for a response to falling behind, Woods blasting over from a good position before former Northwood man Louis Stead headed wide from a Matthew cross. But Northwood continued to look dangerous on the break with Osei directing a header straight at Bufton following Martin’s hanging cross to the far post. The hosts were looking increasingly dangerous as they delivered a strong finish to the opening period with the lively Woods being denied by a last-ditch Lewis Ochoa tackle before the Sarnies’ striker was almost in on goal again but was crowded out by the Northwood defence. At the other end, McDonnell did well to find Martin in a dangerous position but Lewis Cole was on hand to divert the danger for Egham. Woods made a change at the break with Isaac Olurunfemi replacing McDonnell in the right wing-back position. And the visitors had some defending to do as they conceded a couple of early corners. But Northwood’s vulnerability to the set-piece was exposed as Stead flicked on Lewis Cole’s corner for Woods to head home to restore parity on 48 minutes. And Woods went close to adding another as he flashed a shot wide of the far post after good work from Stead. Northwood were struggling to get a grip on proceedings but a rare moment of cohesion involving Chingoka, Olurunfemi and Osei created an opening for Martin but he was crowded out by the Sarnies’ rearguard. And Egham upped the pressure with a series of attacks, Comas producing a point-blank save to deny Woods, while the latter dragged another shot narrowly wide of the target. In between, Stead rattled the Northwood crossbar with a fierce drive. The hosts continued to press and Callum Webb and Rhys Paul tried their luck with long range shots which failed to seriously trouble Comas in the Northwood goal. Woods made a change on 69 minutes with Newman making way for Romelle Alomenu. And Osei went close for Northwood as he shot narrowly wide after being set up by Martin. However, Northwood were made to rue that miss after sloppy defending allowed Woods to send over a cross for Matthew to bundle the ball home to give Egham the lead on 74 minutes. And Matthew went close again as he stung Comas’ fingers with a fierce shot. Woods made another change as they looked for a way back, Nebay Haile replacing Ochoa with the visitors switching to a flat back four. And Haile’s introduction paid dividends as he was involved in Woods’ equaliser with four minutes remaining, the substitute initiating the move before Osei played in Martin who shot beyond Bufton. And Northwood spurned a glorious chance to take all three points in stoppage time as Martin crossed for Osei, but with the goal at his mercy a cruel bobble meant the Woods striker failed to make any contact to ensure that that the honours remained even.

TUESDAY 26TH DECEMBER 2017 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH BEACONSFIELD ROAD

he Woods were unable to follow up Saturday’s impressive victory as they failed to hold onto T an early lead against play-off hopefuls Hayes & Yeading in a Boxing Day clash in front of a surprisingly low crowd, writes Alan Evans. Once again Manager Simon Lane had to bring in a goalkeeper; the ninth of the season, for this tough derby match as Brendan Hazlett and Xavi Comas, who had made his debut a few days earlier, were both away for Christmas. In came youngster Matt Nolan on dual registration from Enfield Town. Brad Hewitt returned to the defence so David Taylor pushed back into midfield to replace Wilson Chingoka after he reported ill that morning. There was plenty of action straight from the start with Harry Newman getting in an early cross which was cut out at the near post by Hayes’ keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle while Matt Nolan was soon called upon to keep out more of a direct effort from out wide by Toby Little. But the Woods then took a prompt lead when Lewis Ochoa slipped a fine ball down the left channel which put former Hayes winger Mahlondo Martin in between two defenders down the middle and he finished in fine style to make it 1-0 to Northwood. It raised the confidence of the Northwood side and on 13 minutes another good ball released Newman again down the left and when his cross eluded two home defenders, it perhaps caught Martin by surprise at the far post as he wasn’t prepared for a shot at goal. Instead he played it across to Tayshan Hayden-Smith who set up Isaac Olorunfemi for a shot which took a deflection but was still comfortably saved by McKenzie-Lyle. Hayes & Yeading were still looking dangerous as well, with Little causing problems on the left. The home side then pulled themselves level after 20 minutes as a ball into the box led to a flurry of legs and when two Northwood defenders were unable to connect to clear Hayes’ top scorer Manny Duku was able to flick a shot into the roof of the net. Suddenly United were on top and ex-Woods striker Ismael Ehui was next to go close as he found space for a powerful strike that was straight at Nolan but the young keeper still did well to keep it out. On 35 minutes the home side benefited from a couple of deflections that went their way and Laste Dombaxe had a clear strike at goal but Nolan was across to push it wide once again. But on 44 minutes Ehui played a ball wide to Little, and he drove in a cross which Lewis Hobbs tried to cut out but only succeeded in diverting inside the near post to leave Nolan stranded and Hayes & Yeading in front. Northwood struggled to threaten after the break, and Nolan had to make another block to deny Duku after a good through-ball from Ola Olajubu. It took until the 64th minute for the Woods to make a dangerous move and it was Martin who provided it as he left Dombaxe trailing as he raced into the box. He cut the ball back to the edge of the area but Taylor was arriving just too late and the ball was cleared. Northwood hopes were finally snuffed out after 78 minutes when Frank Keita latched onto a through-ball and was then caught by Hobbs just inside the box with the Referee pointing straight to the spot. Duncan Culley tucked the spot-kick away to make it 3-1. It got worse for Northwood five minutes later as a poor clearance was returned quickly by Priestly Farquharson and when the bounce was misjudged by Hobbs, Duku was onto it in a flash to place a shot beyond Nolan and make sure of all three points. Nolan showed his shot-stopping prowess again early in stoppage-time as he pushed wide a strike from Keita and then the Woods countered and grabbed a consolation when Martin was put through wide on the right by Hobbs and he cut in to finish well for his second of the game. There was still a late opportunity for Duku to complete his hat-trick but he sliced his shot wide of the target and the game came to an end with a 4-2 scoreline.

Alan Evans looks back at Northwood events of a decade ago PHOTOS by JAMES BROWN

T

oday we continue with our popular feature where we look back to events here at Northwood Park from exactly a decade ago. This has meant a review of our first season back at Step 4 of non-League following the first-ever relegation in the senior club’s history as we succumbed to the drop in our second season of Southern Premier Division football having been transferred across following two years of Isthmian Premier competition.

After a slow start to the season, there had been an upsurge in fortunes. Firstly a series of solid home wins was followed by a brilliant FA Trophy replay win over Isthmian Premier side AFC Hornchurch and then the first away league win of the season, a 3-1 success at league leaders AFC Sudbury with 18-year-old Elliott Buchanan

On Saturday 22nd December 2007, the Woods travelled to play away at Canvey Island who still fancied themselves to get involved in the play-offs at least. Danny Hart’s loan spell from Barnet had come to an end so a fit again Danny Murphy replaced him in the only change from the side that beat Forest a week earlier. And was an end-to-end game with both sides showing plenty of attacking prowess. The Gulls had no less than two goals chalked off in the first-half, one for offside and one for a foul while Northwood went closest when Adrian Abramian saw an effort clashed back off a post. Then came controversy in the final ten minutes. After 81 minutes a defensive slip from the home side allowed Abdul Yoki a free run at goal only for him to be denied by some brave goalkeeping from Ricky Wiseman. The ball was then switched to the other end and after Mitch Swain had made a fine save to keep out a shot from Clyde Roberts. Roberts followed through on Swain on the floor and clearly fouled him as he bundled the ball over the line but the whistle for a foul never came and suddenly Canvey were in front. After six minutes of treatment, a concussed Swain with a head injury then had to make way to be replaced by Ben Harris yet strangely

netting his first Northwood hat-trick, taking his tally to six goals in three games and into double figures for the season; the boy was getting noticed. The FA Trophy run finally came to an end with a narrow 2-1 defeat at AFC Wimbledon in front of a crowd of over 1,500 where the Woods, through Buchanan, had caused a real scare with the opening goal in the very first minute. Now it was time to try to climb the table and after a 6-0 thrashing of Waltham Abbey that equalled the club’s best Isthmian League winning margin score, they had moved towards halfway in the table.

22

Northwood v Arlesey Town

the Gulls were also forced into a change as Wiseman had injured his hand when saving from Yoki and was substituted at the same time by Mel Capleton. Almost immediately Yoki played in Abramian and his square ball

TEN YEARS AFTER was knocked in by Bradley Hewitt who had been thrown forward to make another striking option. It ended 1-1 and while a good point, the consensus was that they could have grabbed all three if not for a poor refereeing decision. That takes us to Boxing Day 2007 and a home game against third-placed Edgware Town who had lost just two games all season under Steve Newing’s management. The Wares included a selection of ex-Northwood players including Gavin Hart, Kevin Chakaodza and Johnny Moore in their starting line-up. With Adam Theo ruled out with injury, James Fisher came in for a debut in defence but Mitch Swain had recovered enough to play. As it turned out, both sides were a bit lacklustre on the day and played out a goalless draw; the first of the season.

followed for substitute Michael Gordon on the left flank with Murphy dropping back to leftback. Their good work was undone though just before the break when Ozie Foster got on the end of a Paul Campbell cross to put Town 2-1 ahead. Enfield could have wrapped it up in the secondhalf with a series of strikes that flew wide and the Woods also lost Buchanan to injury as he was replaced by youth player Jack Bennett. But they stayed determined and in stoppage-time

A few days later and it was back on their travels for Colin Payne’s injury-hit side. Adrian

they grabbed another point with a 2-2 draw as James Fisher stabbed home after a corner wasn’t cleared.

Abramian was ruled out and replaced by Jerome Hall and Dwane Williams was replaced by new signing and similarly named Dwain Williams who made his debut in midfield. The Woods made an excellent start as Ryan Tackley’s through-ball found Hall who buried his shot for his first league goal since February. Unfortunately, Adam Theo was adjudged to have handled in the box and Enfield were level after 14 minutes when Ricci Crace converted from the spot. But the Woods were still looking good with Elliott Buchanan going close on a couple of occasions and Danny Murphy being denied by home ‘keeper Andre Foster. The Woods lost Tackley to injury so another debut

For the opening game of 2008, Northwood travelled to the far from salubrious surroundings of the Cricklefield Stadium, home of struggling Ilford. And they got off to the worst possible start as Danny Downer gave the home side a 14th Minute lead. The Woods struggled to get to grips with a difficult surface but worked hard and they eventually found an equaliser before the break when Elliott Buchanan was picked out by Danny Murphy and he slotted home. Ilford went close to regaining the lead when Theo headed off the line but eventually Northwood were in front on 82 minutes as Bradley Hewitt headed on an Abdul Yoki throwin and Buchanan stabbed home his second. Yet, Ilford then hit back in similar fashion. A long-throw wasn’t dealt with and Kevin Skinner converted from close-range to make it four successive draws for the Woods. We will have more from everything Ten Years After in our next programme. www.northwoodfc.com

AFC Dunstable beat the Moles with a brace from Jermaine Hall after 32 and 62 minutes.

Seventh-placed Ashford Town dropped to six points behind the top six after losing 2-1 at Thame to second-bottom Aylesbury United. Ollie Hogg broke the deadlock to give the Ducks the lead seven minutes into the second half from the penalty spot, only for Max Webb to equalise within two minutes. But Jack Wood popped up 5fiveminutes from time to earn the Ducks a crucial win. Hartley Wintney are eighth, but have games in hand and won 2-0 at home to Bedford Town. Rowan Vine broke the deadlock 2 minutes after the break and Paul Hodges made sure for the Hampshire side 20 minutes from time. Bottom-markers Arlesey Town picked up only their eighth point from twenty-four matches in a 0-0 home draw with Fleet Town, while there was an important win for Barton Rovers, who moved up to fourth-bottom after beating Chalfont St Peter 2-1 at Mill Meadow. Charlie Jones gave last season`s playoff finalists a 16th minute lead that Jimmy Hartley quickly doubled 3 minutes later. All the Saints could muster in response was a last-minute Ben WardCochrane effort. www.northwoodfc.com
