elcome back to Northwood Park this afternoon, and we are pleased to see all our supporters new and old, and also extend our welcome all connected with Aylesbury FC; we trust they enjoy their stay with us and have a safe journey home later.

Last season two late goals – in the 88th and 93rd minutes – gave Aylesbury a 2-0 win here early in the season, whilst a cold pre-Christmas December evening saw the sides share the points in a 1-1 draw at Haywood Road. Again, the goals arrived near the end, Jordan Jenkins putting Aylesbury ahead on 83 minutes only for Luke Heneghan to level with two minutes of normal time remaining. In fact, the Woods have a poor record against Aylesbury – since they were promoted to the Southern League in 2010, we have won just twice in fourteen meetings, with six draws and six defeats. Things really need to change…!! It seems ages ago since our last home match; in fact, it was three weeks ago, when the Woods chalked up an impressive 3-0 scoreline against a much-fancied Kempston Rovers outfit, leading scorer Jermaine Osei netting twice and Lewis Ochoa grabbed his first goal for the club since joining from Hanwell Town. We really should have then taken all three points at struggling Barton Rovers a fortnight ago, when despite Jermaine Osei getting on the mark again, a late and very controversial penalty award cost Woods two points. Then last weekend, a steady first half saw Northwood level at the break at AFC Rushden & Diamonds, but the well-supported home side powered ahead in the second period, and we ended up on the wrong end of a 0-4 scoreline. And unfortunately, young defender Pat Adamson was seriously injured in the closing stages of the game, and a hospital scan later confirmed that he suffered a broken leg. We wish Pat all the best for a speedy recovery. After today’s game, we have two fixtures on the road, starting with a trip to Thame United on Tuesday evening, whilst we have a shorter journey on Saturday, to Beaconsfield Town. The Woods are back here at Northwood Park on Saturday 9th December with a visit from AFC Dunstable at the usual time of 3.00 p.m. – don’t miss it!!

ood afternoon and welcome to Chestnut Avenue for today’s Evostik League fixture. We welcome our visitors from Aylesbury FC and trust you will enjoy your short stay here.

Ok, I didn’t see the Rushden game, but reading and hearing the feedback, the result was the right one although yet again individual errors have cost us, not for the first time this season. With a disappointing draw at Barton the previous Saturday, we really need to get back to winning ways today. Barton is a very well run club and are blessed with many helpers behind the scenes. Oh I wish........ Away from football, you will hopefully all now have seen the adverts for our very first Santa’s Grotto in December. Please tell as many people as possible and of course, as always, if anyone can spare some time to help, please let me know.

“ Hopefully you all now have seen the adverts for our very first Santa’s Grotto ”

We are also having discussions to bring back a firework display here for next year and beyond, so watch this space! More from me next time, as loads to do here...... Up the Woods!

ood afternoon everyone as we welcome our visitors Aylesbury FC.

down the slope we were still confident of emerging with the three points having deservedly gone ahead.

We return home after a couple of weeks away at tough locations for differing reasons. Our run of six unbeaten in the league with a number of good wins came to an end at AFC Rushden and Diamonds last week, who are certainly my favourites to win the league title.

However, not for the first or last time the referee intervened and saw a handball (subsequently admitted by one of their players as their hand) and gave them a penalty with a few minutes to go………

We went into that game top of the form league but crucially missing our top striker Jermaine Osei. This proved pivotal, given a few good chances that we created. However, we were ruthlessly punished in the last quarter of the game by four individual errors. The previous game, at Barton Rovers, on a very sticky pitch saw us pay for not finishing a host of first half chances, and even though the home side forced an element of pressure

Suffice to say that I wasn’t pleased. So our unbeaten run preserved but definitely two points dropped. Before those two games, in the four previous ones, many of which were at home, the guys continued to show their potential with excellent wins and we are hopeful that we return to Northwood Park today in the same vein. Enjoy the game. Up the Woods!

WELCOME TO

AYLESBURY he club has enjoyed a long history in senior T and junior football dating back to the 1930s under the previous names of Aylesbury

Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti & Zambra. The club gained many honours including runners up in the Aylesbury District League, which they joined in 1954, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe & District League first and senior divisions, and moved to the present location at Haywood Way in 1987.

After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983; in 1996 two senior teams were formed under the Belgrave name and at the start of the 2000/01 season, the senior Belgrave team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into

6

Northwood v Aylesbury

Division One after two seasons. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division in 2004, and in their first season claimed third spot. Season 2006/07 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC. Two years later the club enjoyed good runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup before losing to Gosport after a replay, and losing to Leiston Town in the 4th round of the FA Vase. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi-professional side managed by Mark Eaton and coached by Trevor Griffiths being announced. This prompted the club committee to vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone. The club enjoyed a fantastic run in the FA Cup in 2009/10, being last level five team in the country, and they won both the Spartan South Midlands League and League Cup to gain promotion to the Southern League Division One Central, and finished eighth in their first season. The 2015/16 season ended with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play-off

positions, but had the consolation of their first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon and Gareth Risbridger took the helm, supported by Paul Bonham, Ryan Wiffin and Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon and Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin, adding Ryan Collings to his back room staff for the 2017/18 season.

AFC RUSHDEN & D. 4 NORTHWOOD

SATURDAY 18TH NOVEMBER 2017 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH HAYDEN ROAD, RUSHDEN

orthwood’s six-match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end as they crashed to a heavy defeat at N title-hopefuls AFC Rushden & Diamonds with all the goal coming inside twenty-five second half minutes, writes Alan Evans. With just seven minutes on the clock a well-delivered Rushden free-kick from Joel Gyasi presented Tom Lorraine with a free header but he steered it wide of the far post while three minutes later Joe Curtis tried his luck from distance but was well adrift.

The Woods were struggling to get a foothold in the game and after 11 minutes Ben Farrell latched onto a loose ball that flew goalwards until goalkeeper Brendan Hazlett flew across goal to push it wide for a corner which the keeper also punched clear. It took 14 minutes for Northwood to finally break into the final third with Mahlondo Martin getting forward and sending over a good cross but goalkeeper Ben Heath was able to intercept it well. Diamonds were soon back on the attack with Richard Robbins being put through after good work from Gyasi and he cut in before forcing Hazlett into a good block at his near post. Martin managed to get the first shot on target for the visitors a minute later as he also cut in from the right but his strike lacked the power needed to trouble Heath between the sticks. After 24 minutes Michael Buckley picked up a yellow card for his first foul of the game in the middle of the park. It was to hamstring the Woods midfield for the rest of the game as he had to be careful for such a long period but he was also next to shoot for goal; his effort always arrowing wide of the upright. Northwood were gradually getting into the match and after 34 minutes further good approach work from Martin led to Pat Adamson feeding Evans Kouassi out wide and his cross had Newman stretching for a header which flew wide of the goal. The home side were still getting the lion’s share of the refereeing decisions though, going to ground easily and Lewis Hobbs was somewhat unlucky to pick up a yellow card for an innocuous trip but the Woods were getting closer as Kouassi put in an inviting cross but there was no-one to slide in. Just before the break it was back at the other end with Lorraine getting his head to another Gyasi cross but again Hazlett was equal to it, pushing the ball over the bar but it was almost Northwood who nicked a lead in stoppage-time. A ball played forward had Heath racing out of goal to clear but, as happened to many players during the afternoon, he slipped on the greasy surface and it gave Martin half a chance. He did well to go for a first-time shot from a tight angle but an excellent defensive block from Sam Brown kept it out. So, it was still all to play for as the second half began and Kouassi was first to go for goal as he did well to find some space but then shot wide. Rushden were beginning to threaten more as the half wore on with Luke Fairlamb starting to cause problems for young defender Isaac Olorunfemi, beating him before seeing a dangerous cross-shot blocked by Hewitt. And after 57 minutes, just after another run and cross from Martin had flown across the face of the goal, the home side got their breakthrough with a superb strike. It was Fairlamb that produced the cross again and when Hewitt’s clearing header dropped just outside the box it was Richard Bunting who met it with a cracking half-volley that flew inside the post to give Hazlett no chance. Despite the goal, the Woods showed good spirit to try to get back on level terms quickly with Kouassi’s turn and shot deflecting wide for a corner and then Hobbs got forward to set up Martin for a similar strike that forced Heath into a good save. After 64 minutes Hewitt just got his head to a corner but the ball flew over the top. Wilson Chingoka replaced Buckley for some fresh legs in midfield and the home side picked up their first booking as Gyasi pulled back Newman but after 67 minutes Diamonds notched their second killer goal when Lorraine knocked a cross down for Farrell to score with an excellent finish into the top corner. It was game over six minutes later when a rare mistake from Hewitt failed to clear his lines and Brown drove the ball home from close range, then after 82 minutes substitute Ben Diamond was put through and he finished really well to make it 4-0.

BARTON ROVERS 1 NORTHWOOD

1

SATURDAY 11TH NOVEMBER 2017 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH SHARPENHOE ROAD

anager Simon Lane classed this as two points dropped after conceding a late equaliser from a M disputed penalty against a Barton Rovers side who are yet to record a win at home this season, writes Alan Evans. There was just one change to the side that had started in the previous week’s victory over Kempston Rovers with Evans Kouassi returning while Tayshan Hayden-Smith dropped to the bench for a bit of a rest. The home side had made several new signings following their disastrous 7-0 loss at Hartley Wintney a week earlier including the vastly experienced goalkeeper Matt Finlay, and he was to prove an important addition for Rovers.

The Woods were looking to notch a fifth successive league win and started with plenty of confidence, pushing Barton onto the back-foot for much of the early stages with Kouassi combining well with Jermaine Osei but it was Michael Buckley who notched the first effort on goal though he fired well wide. A Mahlondo Martin cross was cleared for a corner and a good strike from a Buckley free-kick produced the first save as Finlay stretched to push the ball wide of the upright. Buckley had another effort deflected wide while a good run from full-back Isaac Olorunfemi led to a shot that was always just wide as Northwood continued to dominate but without finding the breakthrough. Barton finally created an opportunity after 24 minutes as a quick break saw Tom Peverall find Danny Watson in space but his first-time chip sailed well wide of the target. Back at the other end and Kouassi shot wide after a good ball from Osei and then an excellent move again involving Osei linking with Kouassi produced an accurate cross and Harry Newman’s header was palmed over the top by Finlay in goal. The home side managed one more chance on 36 minutes as an attempted header away by Brad Hewitt saw Ewan Fieldhouse back across goal and another header from Jamie Nicholls was plucked out of the air by Hazlett. Northwood hit back again and should have led before the break. Osei and Kouassi combined once more with the former shooting low but again seeing Finlay get down to it and save well. Then Martin fed Osei down the left and he cut in to make some space before a crisp strike flew across goal and clipped the far post. It was up the slope for the second half for the Woods but in the very first minute Osei worked his way into the box and was felled by Dan Newton for a clear penalty. It was the in-form Osei who took responsibility for his first spot-kick of the season and he sent Finlay the wrong way to put Northwood into a deserved lead. The Woods seemed happy to sit back a little on that lead and they appeared to be very comfortable so Barton made a couple of changes on the hour with a double substitution. One of them, James Hockney made a quick impact with a ball that found Kyle Lincoln out wide who cut in but shot miles over the bar. After 69 minutes Hazlett was suddenly in action, keeping out a Newton header and then pushing away Watson’s effort from the rebound. But that was a rare threat from the home side and generally Northwood were defending solidly while also creating very little to secure the points. As the game entered the final ten minutes, Hayden-Smith replaced the limping Osei while Wilson Chingoka came on for the hard-working Lewis Ochoa. And all seemed to be going well but after 85 minutes a ball into the box was blocked and the Referee spoiled an otherwise impeccable performance by deciding on a handball offence that surprised everyone and even he described as “an unlucky one” after the game. Watson took full advantage of the gift by rolling in the penalty and levelling the scores. There was only a brief amount of time to react. Kouassi jinked across the edge of the box but lacked composure with a shot that flew well over while Hockney had an effort for Rovers that was blocked. Finally, in the third minute of stoppage-time, Kouassi’s testing cross was palmed out by Finlay on the edge of the six-yard box and when Chingoka managed to recover it and find Buckley, the Woods midfielder curled a shot that missed the far post by just a few inches.

KEMPSTON R. 0

SATURDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2017 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH CHESTNUT AVENUE

he Woods extended their run of good form with a fourth consecutive victory with this solid and T impressive defeat of a Kempston Rovers side that never recovered from conceding two early goals. There were a couple of changes for Simon Lane’s team with Pat Adamson return to the left-

back position after two months out with a hamstring injury while Mahlondo Martin started in place of Evans Kouassi who had picked up a little bit of hamstring strain himself, writes Alan Evans.

And it was Martin who kick-started this match from an early stage as after just five minutes he attacked down the right, beating his marker and sending over a pinpoint cross which was swept home by the Woods new marksman Jermaine Osei. Just over a minute later there was a similar move down the opposite flank as Harry Newman left two defenders in his wake before crossing and Osei was there again to fire past goalkeeper Martin Conway for 2-0. It was the striker’s eighth goal in just seven appearances since signing on dual-registration from neighbours Wealdstone. The visitors were stung and picked up an early booking too when Grant Fryer hacked down Newman but they did eventually settle and midway through the half, they began to make some inroads. After 22 minutes Jake Newman got the better of Brad Hewitt as he twisted and turned in the box and he rolled the ball back to Sam Macrae whose low strike crept only just wide of the upright. Two minutes later, former Woods winger Luke Heneghan set up Robbie Goodman and his strike deflected off the block from Hewitt but spun up and into the safe arms of goalkeeper Brendan Hazlett. The Woods still looked dangerous on the break and Michael Buckley sprayed a good ball wide to Martin who cut in and tried a first-time shot that flashed across Conway but wide of the far post. The Walnuts looked particularly threatening from set-plays. On 33 minutes a deep free-kick was headed back across goal by Fryer and it seemed Newman may get in at the far post but was denied by a good block from Lewis Hobbs who just toed the ball off for a corner. From that Fryer had a free header which had plenty of power but flew over the top. Four minutes later Hewitt got his head on an Ash Fuller cross though the ball still reached Ben Shepherd on the far side of goal but there was no control on his attempted volley with the ball soaring high and wide. Just before the break Osei picked up a yellow card for a foul when challenging Fryer for a ball in the box while Fuller was also yellow carded for dissent after the halftime whistle. It suggested that there might be a feisty undercurrent in the second-half but to be fair that never developed. It was Kempston who came out looking for a way back into the game though. Fuller fired a shot that wasn’t far wide and then a Fuller chip to the far post was again met by Fryer but his header was across goal and also wide of the target. Soon after, Newman had another good turn and shot well blocked by a Northwood defence which was working hard across the line. After 58 minutes Harry Newman was stopped in his tracks once again and Lewis Ochoa tried his luck from a long-distance free-kick but it always going wide of the post while a long mazy run from Martin could have produced a chance but the pass never came and he was crowded out. The Walnuts seemed to be running out of ideas when the Woods put the game out of their reach on 76 minutes. It was Newman that was the creator again with a battling run that saw him get the better of the full-back and his cut-back to Ochoa saw the midfielder finish in style with a shot that flew into the top corner for his first goal for the club. Kouassi was introduced for the final ten minutes and he was quickly involved, exchanging passes with Tayshan Hayden-Smith and then seeing his strike well saved by Conway. Kempston’s final chance came after 87 minutes when a long-range effort from Goodman was comfortably saved low down by Hazlett who would have been delighted to maintain another clean sheet as the Woods continued to climb the table.

PYRAMID PANORAMA

B

ALAN EVANS

efore our usual browse around the nonLeague Pyramid that surrounds us, I thought it might be a good idea to explain the restructure that is planned for the end of this season and how that affects promotion and relegation in this campaign, as quite a few people I’ve spoken to lately seem to have no idea!

As I’m sure most of you are aware, currently at step three of non-League there are three Leagues (Evo-Stik Northern Premier, Evo-Stik Southern, and Bostik Isthmian). All three Leagues have two feeder Divisions within their control at step four where we also currently sit. From 2018/19, a fourth League at level three will be introduced, covering the central area of England (which will also be run by the Southern League), thus reducing travel time for some clubs. However, this fourth League will have just one further Division below at step four (which is going to be run by the Isthmian League). So, in total, step three will then have four Leagues, and step four will have seven feeders divisions. To fully enable the new set-up to integrate additional teams, for the coming season only, just one club will be relegated from each of the three current step three Leagues. Now the bit that most affects the Woods. From the current six step four Divisions, 19 clubs will be promoted – 6 as champions, 6 as runnersup, the highest ranked third placed team from any of the three Leagues/six Divisions with the highest points per game ratio (with the seventh placed team within that League competing in their play-off games), and 6 play-off winners.

16

Northwood v Aylesbury

As at step 3, at step 4, only one team from each of the six Divisions will be relegated. From below our level, promotion from the 14 feeder Leagues at step 5, will see 26 clubs moving up to step 4, 14 being the Champions, and the other 12 being the highest ranked based on points per game from whatever division (not necessarily the runners-up). For next season all Step 3 Divisions will have 22 teams (rather than the 24 they currently have while Step 4 Division will only have 20 clubs in each (as opposed to 22 in ours and 24 in the Bostik League). Anyway, let’s now have a quick look around what’s happening in the non-League Pyramid but also with a view to the local area and a slant towards all things Northwood. The FA Cup Not too many non-League sides remain in the FA Cup at the Second Round proper stage but two of the National League sides have Northwood connections. Managers of Boreham Wood in Luke Garrard (right) and Woking with Anthony Limbrick (above right), who beat Blackpool and Bury respectively in Round One, both played for the Woods in 2005/06. Another player who had a dual-registration spell at Northwood,

defender Richard Orlu, is currently turning out for Woking. Around the nonLeague Pyramid Hampton & Richmond Borough have picked up in recent weeks and have now moved into fifth place in National League South and are the highest-ranked Middlesex non-League side at present. Wealdstone have also been going well but last Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Oxford City saw them slip to twelfth, though only four points adrift of the play-off places. St. Albans City and Hemel Hempstead Town are both also still in the top nine though Hemel have recently lost star striker Charlie Sheringham to a professional contract in the Bangladesh Premier League. No local sides are struggling at present. Step Three As mentioned earlier, it’s only one team to be relegated from each of the Premier Divisions this season and at the moment that position belongs to Worthing in the Isthmian League as they are five points adrift of Harlow Town. Just five points separate ten clubs that sit above the Hawks though and that brings in Harrow Borough who have fallen away after an excellent start to the season. Staines Town, whose side currently includes three exNorthwood players in Danny and Bayley Brown (left) plus Elliott Buchanan up front, are currently the best placed Middlesex side in the table as they sit in fifth place, just inside the play-off positions and just ahead of Hendon for who Niko Muir still leads the goalscoring charts. Wingate & Finchley are mid-table but with games in hand. At the very top Dulwich Hamlet are seven points clear of Folkestone Invicta but have recently very publicly announced financial issues with their owners. Big-spending Billericay Town, who had an FA Cup shock of their own

last week when losing to Leatherhead, are in third place but with five games in hand and have only dropped five league points so far. In our own Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division, Slough Town are the stars at present and have a televised FA Cup tie against Rochdale to look forward to on Monday night while sitting in second place, six points behind leaders King’s Lynn Town but with three games in hand. King’s Lynn lost star striker Grant Holt recently to an assistant manager’s job in Barrow. Hereford are another team going great guns in all competitions, beating Hitchin Town 5-0 in front of more than 2,000 last Saturday and they are also well placed alongside other former nonLeague giants of Kettering Town and Weymouth. The big story last week was at Merthyr Town where financial problems have risen yet again. Lots of player and board resignations meant they had to field a youth side at Chesham United and they crashed to a 13-1 defeat having been 9-0 down at half-time. For the relegation spot, it looks like being a battle between bottom side Gosport Borough and Dunstable Town. The two met last Saturday with the Hampshire club winning their first three points of the season but they are still two points behind and both are almost twenty points behind Merthyr at present. Of the two promoted sides from last season, Royston Town are doing quite a bit better than Farnborough. Step Four Former Woods striker Michael Murray bagged a hat-trick for Potters Bar last Saturday in their 4-1 win over lowly Norwich United with another ex-Woods man, Steve Brown (right), netting the other. The Scholars are still going okay, and if they win their games in hand they would be pushing for the playoff places though Norfolk-based Dereham Town, Canvey Island, AFC Hornchurch and Haringey Borough have all started well too. Our FA Trophy conquerors Maldon & Tiptree are also picking up after a slow start, while Heybridge Swifts are also expected to climb now they are out of the FA Cup. Facing that one daunting relegation spot at the moment are Romford, Norwich United, Cheshunt or Aveley, whose start

PYRAMID PANORAMA at their new ground has not really gone to plan so far. In the South Division, Shoreham have fallen victims to “registration irregularities” and have had six points deducted leaving them with just two points from 18 games and they face an uphill battle to avoid being in that one relegation spot. Feeder Leagues Berkhamsted are still unbeaten and just ahead of Welwyn Garden City in the Spartan South Midlands League and those two look likely to battle it out for the title this season at this stage. Wembley are the best placed of the local Middlesex sides but they lost 3-2 here at Northwood Park last Saturday to our tenants London Tigers. Edgware Town and Oxhey Jets are both mid-table. Westfield are no longer unbeaten but they still lead the Combined Counties League by seven points with Walton & Hersham and

Bedfont Sports their nearest challengers. North Greenford United have picked up into a mid-table position alongside newcomers CB Hounslow but AFC Hayes are still struggling nearer the bottom. Elsewhere, one of the best records in nonLeague at present belongs to the Eastern Counties League leaders Felixstowe & Walton United who have already played twenty-one matches and have won twenty of them. However, though they are no less than twenty points clear, second-placed Coggeshall Town have five games in hand so could still challenge! Southall’s record in Division One of the Spartan South Midlands is pretty good as well – winning fourteen and drawing one of their fifteen league games to date while Hillingdon Borough have only won one at the bottom of that division. The worst record appears to belong to Clipstone Welfare in the Premier Divison of the Northern Counties East, having lost all nineteen league matches.

Alan Evans looks back at Northwood events of a decade ago PHOTOS by JAMES BROWN

T

oday we continue with our popular feature where we look back to events here at Northwood Park from exactly a decade ago. This has meant a review of our first season back at Step 4 of non-League following the first-ever relegation in the senior club’s history as we succumbed to the drop in our second season of Southern Premier Division football having been transferred across following two years of Isthmian Premier competition.

After a slow start to the season and while still looking for their first away win of the season into November, a pick-up in their home form alongside a good start in the FA Trophy had helped raise spirits and when we left it in our last programme, the Woods had just drawn 2-2 at Isthmian Premier side AFC Hornchurch to

force a midweek replay thanks to two fine goals from youngster Elliott Buchanan. Manager Colin Payne was able to call upon Adam Theo after his one-match ban and also Ryan Tackley after injury for the Tuesday night replay and after the draw had been made the previous day it was also known that the winners of the tie would play away to the wellsupported AFC Wimbledon in the next round. As expected, the Urchins started strongly,

26

Northwood v Aylesbury

though their attacking prowess was a little thwarted by the thick layer of autumn leaves which had blown onto the pitch in the usual corner following a wet and windy afternoon. Goalkeeper Mitch Swain was in fine form to deny Kris Lee early on but after 21 minutes Bradley Hewitt spoiled an otherwise impeccable start to the half by tripping Lee and conceding a penalty. However, for the second home game in succession, on-loan ‘keeper Swain guessed correctly to save Joe Keith’s penalty. Swain’s heroics seemed to inspire Northwood and there were a series of opportunities to give the Woods the lead with Adrian Abramian, Elliott Buchanan, Abdul Yoki and Dwane Williams all going close as they got on top before the break. And after surviving a couple of early scares in the second-half it was the Woods who grabbed the elusive opening goal after 57 minutes with Yoki giving goalkeeper Dale Brightly no chance with a low drive from the edge of the box. Hornchurch were rocked by the goal and almost conceded a second straight away as Tackley’s enticing cross just evaded the lunges of both Abramian and Buchanan. The Urchins almost levelled though when Swain produced another excellent save to deny Lee and after 65 minutes Northwood showed how it should be done with a crucial second goal, Abramian holding the ball well before setting up Buchanan who finished with aplomb. It set up a nervy final twenty

TEN YEARS AFTER minutes or so, especially so when Hornchurch finally got their breakthrough with Swain at last beaten by Lee on 77 minutes. And although there were chances at both ends in the closing stages, it was Northwood who had done enough to hold on to their victory and earn a shot at AFC Wimbledon at the next stage. That game was still a few weeks away though and before that they faced three league games to try and improve their position in the table. However that would start on Saturday 10th November 2007 with a really tough away game at the league leaders AFC Sudbury who were still unbeaten at home having dropped just one point in six matches. There was just one change to the side again, this time with youngster Danny Brown coming in at right-back to replace Jazz Rose and the first halfhour of the match was a bit non-descript with

both sides being restricted to long-range efforts. The Woods finally created the first chance of the game with Bradley Hewitt nodding down a Ryan Tackley free-kick but Abdul Yoki was unable to guide his diving-header past goalkeeper Nathan Munson. Though Sudbury were also beginning to show some of their attacking intent, Mitch Swain saved comfortably from Chris Bacon’s header and it remained goalless at half-time. After the break Northwood were forced into a change as Tackley succumbed to a first-half knock and was replaced by Rose but it was the Woods who were looking the more dangerous with Elliott Buchanan heading a Danny Hart cross onto the crossbar while Munson saved

from the young striker’s follow-up effort. After Swain had parried Gareth Heath’s fiercelystruck free-kick, Northwood then took a 66th minute lead as the excellent Adrian Abramian found Buchanan on the edge of the box and his low strike squirmed through the hands of Munson and trickled over the line. Despite being the division’s highest scorers, the Suffolk side seemed devoid of any ideas despite a triple substitution. And they were wiped out by two further goals from Buchanan in the final ten minutes as the young striker completed his first-ever Northwood hat-trick. The home side did find a consolation in the closing stages but the Woods had notched their first away win of the season and were really now on the march up the table.

Colin Payne fielded a full reserve side on the following Tuesday night away at Harefield United in the Middlesex Charity Cup and despite a goal from Sam Holland, son of club favourite Rob, they slipped to a 5-1 defeat against a Hares side that included another ex-Woods favourite in Gary Williams and perhaps more importantly an impressive forward in Sean Sonner. Unfortunately, the warm-up game for the FA Trophy tie at AFC Wimbledon failed to maintain the Woods form. At home to an Aveley side under new management and with a completely new side, the Woods never managed to get their game going at any time and they went down 0-2 with both goals scored by Bradley Barnes. We will have the news from that FA Trophy tie at AFC Wimbledon and more from Ten Years After in our next matchday programme.

Northwood v Aylesbury

EVO-STIK LEAGUE, SOUTH

ROUND-UP

Focus of attention in Tuesday night’s games in the Evo-Stik League South, East was more on the bottom end than the top. Bottom-markers Arlesey Town are six points adrift after losing 2-1 at Hanwell Town, who moved up a place to thirdbottom, relegating Aylesbury United to second-bottom spot. Joe Chandiram proved to be Hanwell’s hero on the night at The Powerday Stadium, netting a brace in the 21st and 30th minutes. Taylor Rhiney reduced the deficit 16 minutes from time to make it a nervy finale, but the hosts held firm to increase the gap between them.

TODAY’S FIXTURES Ashford Town v AFC Rushden & D. Barton Rovers, last season`s play-off final runners-up, moved up to seventeenth in the table, level on points but a place below Aylesbury FC after beating the Moles 1-0 at Haywood Way. What turned out to be the only goal of a nervy game came after just 6 minutes from Ivan Machado. At the other end of the table, Beaconsfield Town are now fifth after winning 1-0 at the New Eyrie against Bedford Town. Wes Daly’s 17th minute effort eventually proved enough for the visitors.

Bedford`s neighbours Kempston Rovers moved back above Eagles into ninth after winning a best-of-five encounter with Ashford Town, who they also moved above, at Hillgrounds. Two goals in a minute from Josh Crawley gave the Walnut Boys a 2-0 lead by the 10th minute. Jabir Laraba reduced the arrears just before half-time, and then Will Boye equalised with 20 minutes remaining. But Jake Newman won it for the hosts in the 81st minute. On Monday evening, Cambridge City entertained fellow promotion-chasers AFC Dunstable night looking to move to within a point of long-time leaders Moneyfields. However, City suffered a frustrating evening at Westwood Road. Despite dominating large parts of the match, City were unable to breach a well-drilled visiting defence. After a goalless opening 45 minutes, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock after 65 minutes through Leon Cashman. And then in the 85th minute, AFC Dunstable confirmed victory that lifted them up to fourth place, a point behind City, when Jermaine Hall added the second goal. Aylesbury United were beaten 2-0 at home by Hartley Wintney on Wednesday evening. Jake Baxter gave the visitors a deserved lead ten minutes before half time, before a disputed penalty for handball brought about the second which Dean Stow leathered in, on 76 minutes. That was about all there was to dispute though, Aylesbury being comfortably beaten and had it not been for several glaring misses and good saves by Jack Sillitoe, the scoreline might have been higher. www.northwoodfc.com
