elcome back to Northwood Park this evening/afternoon (delete as appropriate), and we are pleased to see our supporters new and old, and also welcome all connected with Egham Town F.C.; we trust they enjoy their stays with us and have a safe journey home later.

The visit of the Surrey club twice within five days was just the excuse that I needed to produce a joint matchday programme, and it will be interesting to see how both clubs approach the two games, the BigFreeBet Challenge Cup on Tuesday being followed by Saturday’s Evo-Stik League South fixture. Egham, now under management of Chris Moore assisted by Wayne Carter – both former Northwood players – have started the campaign very well; last weekend’s 4-1 defeat of Aylesbury was their fourth victory in five League outings. The completely revamped Northwood squad have also had an encouraging start to the season – although not in the F.A. Cup, as usual! – although Saturday’s trip to relegated Cambridge City saw a narrow 1-0 reverse. Hopefully in these games against Egham, we shall a reprise of the outstanding performance against Hayes & Yeading United in the last home game. A feature of pretty much every Northwood game this term has been the entertaining and creative football being played by Simon Lane’s young (other than Brad) squad, and they have regularly attracted praise from opposing managers and supporters. It’s been great to watch! Following this week’s two games against Egham Town, the Woods travel to play old rivals Uxbridge next Saturday, 23rd September, before they return to action here at Chestnut Avenue with a visit from Ashford Town on Tuesday 26th September – don’t miss it!! Many thanks for your support, and we hope to see you here again very soon!

elcome to Chestnut Avenue for our two matches here, in the League Cup on Tuesday and Saturday’s game in the League. We welcome our visitors from Egham Town FC and trust you enjoy your short stays here.

On the pitch; a disappointing defeat at Cambridge City last Saturday. We were undone by ourselves in a poor opening 15 minutes, during which period we conceded the game’s only goal. Once we re-grouped, we got ourselves back in the match and dominated for periods, creating enough good chances to have won. We look to get back on track in these two games here at home. We welcome back ex-Northwood players Chris Moore and Wayne Carter who have taken over the helm at Egham this season. We wish them well in their new venture. As we continuously improve here, we are now looking for more volunteers to join us, especially on matchdays, when there is an ever-increasing list of things to do. Shortly, we will be opening our club shop and museum and as well as looking for items from ‘yesteryear’ to put on display, we will also need someone to help in the shop for a few hours per week. Please let me know if you can assist us.

the games; we will be having a minutes silence before the game as well as playing some of his favourite songs and having some refreshments and food in the clubhouse. It’s an important day for me personally, so please feel free to join me. My Dad made many friends here and you’re all welcome to raise a glass in his memory. If you could let me know if you’re attending, I’d appreciate that. Further reminders will appear in future programmes. Enjoy the games. Up the Woods!

“ We are looking for more volunteers especially on matchdays ”

The 21st October marks the anniversary of my Dad’s passing and our home game that day against Aylesbury United will be named ‘Pete Barry Day’. Everyone is welcome to come along and pay your respects; I will be unveiling a plaque in the area my Dad stood to watch www.northwoodfc.com

ello all, and welcome to Northwood Park for the visit of Egham Town, whether it be Tuesday’s game in the League Cup or Saturday’s Evo-Stik League encounter! Following our harsh exit from the FA Cup (I’m still not over it!!) we have had just two competitive games since my last programme notes this was written before Saturday’s game at Cambridge City.

The small matter of Hayes and Yeading at home in the league on Bank Holiday Monday followed the away win at Arlesey Town. Both matches were played in sweltering conditions and the boys acquitted themselves extremely well In both games to bag a maximum six points. Some of the comments made by many supporters after the Hayes game about the quality of the 4

Northwood v Egham Town

football was super to hear, and it’s the supporters we are working hard for every day. It is fair to say that we have had an extremely tough start to the season, given the fact that we have played both the promoted sides in Hartley Wintney and Moneyfields, who have started like they’re on fire, and two of the three clear favourites for the title in Hayes and Yeading and Cambridge City respectively. Given those facts ,even though I am never fully pleased, we have largely performed very well indeed. Our fitness has been a major factor in the success so far, and pays homage to the hard work the boys undertook during the summer. Undoubtedly there is still some tweaking and embedding of our processes to be done for this new young squad.

But it’s been a positive start and the feel-good factor is in evidence here at Northwood Park these days. Long may that continue!! Enjoy the game. Up the Woods!

WELCOME TO

EGHAM TOWN

T

he present club came into being in 1963, and having played in the Parthenon League in 1964-65 season, Town played in the Surrey Senior League in 1965, and then moved into the Spartan League, claiming the title in 1971-72. They were then elected into the Athenian League and captured the Second Division Championship at the first attempt in 1974-75 and finishing as First Division runnersup the following season. When the Isthmian League expanded in 1977, the Sarnies were duly elected but after finishing 6th in their first season success always eluded them. They have reached the fourth round of the FA Vase once in their history – the 1984-85 season. They narrowly missed promotion from the final season of the regionalised Division Two in 1990–91, when what was Divisions Two North and South was reorganised for the following season as Two and Three. Egham finished third in Division Two South with a tally of 87 points and 100 goals – both would have been good enough in almost any other season to secure one of the two promotion spots. In that season, they also had the best ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round before losing at Telford United. The 1991–92 season saw the Sarnies reach the Finals of the Surrey Senior Cup and Loctite Trophy but lose both. The club then went into a decline that culminated in

6

Northwood v Egham Town

relegation from Division Two of the Isthmian League in 1997–98. The club was promoted to Division One South of the Isthmian League but were switched to the Southern League in 2004, which proved disastrous. In the 2005–06 season they played in the Isthmian League Division Two but were then moved into the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Season 2006–07 began promisingly, but more managerial upheaval and injuries to key players saw the club finish a disappointing 10th with 58 points. The following season the same number of points were accumulated, but a couple of heavy losses in the early part of the season led to a season long battle against relegation. Despite pre-season optimism, the club continued to struggle during 2008-09 and former player Steve Baker was appointed manager. Baker’s first full season saw the club finish 4th after a long unbeaten run, which success gave the club byes for the first two rounds of the FA Vase. However early in 2010– 11 Baker was replaced by John Hamsher. The 2012-13 season proved to be Egham Town’s season, coming out as Combined Counties Premier Division champions after a neck and neck title chase with Guernsey FC. But the season got off to a shaky start, after the management team of John Hamsher

and Wayne Noad left the club to take charge of Chipstead, to be replaced by Lee Passmore. Thereafter the campaign just got better and better, with some fantastic performances against Windsor, Cove, Badshot Lea and a memorable 3-1 home win against eventual runners-up Guernsey seeing the Sarnies creep up the table before taking up residence in first place. Appalling weather disrupted every clubs’ preparation, but Egham were relentlessly picking up points and set a club record of 14 straight home wins before collapsing inexplicably by 1-6 to relegation threatened Hartley Wintney. But Egham won the title – and promotion to the Southern League – on 4 May 2013 with a 1-0 win against Bedfont Sports. Season 2013-14 saw a vibrant Egham Town looking forward to the challenge of football back in the Southern League, much better prepared than in 2004-05, aiming initially to better their previous mark in the Southern League, which was achieved fairly comfortably. Despite the clubhouse, the pitch and the surrounding area being badly flooded for weeks on end the club spirit held and in a very competitive division the final finish of 11th, and a run to the Semi Final of the Surrey Senior Cup, left the Sarnies in a confident mood to tackle season 2014 – 2015. Egham Town were shaken on 4 October 2014 when Lee Passmore resigned his post as manager for personal reasons, Jack McKinlay and Neerav Patel following him. Continuing a club policy of trying wherever possible to promote from within the club the reins were handed to Luke Muldowney, the team captain, with the hugely experienced Richie Byrne assisting him. Unfortunately this only lasted 21 matches as after two heavy defeats and with the club sliding down the table a change was required. Egham Town were next managed by Koo Dumbuya, a very well respected coach who used to play for the Sarnies. He was assisted by Trevor Norris, father of goalkeeper Jamie, and in his own right a manager and coach with a very impressive track record. The Sarnies progressed to the Semi-Finals of the Red Insure Cup. Slough Town were beaten 4-2 at the Runnymede Stadium, then Egham won 2-1 at Godalming Town and 5-4 on penalties at Burnham after coming from 0-2 and 1-3 to finish 3-3 at the end of normal time. Then they beat North Greenford United 2-1 at home before travelling to Premier Division leaders and Premier Division promotion challengers Poole Town. Mitchell Gutteridge gave us a half-time lead, the Dolphins levelled then Reis Stanislaus banged in a 35 yarder. Egham stretched Poole all the way and they only

secured their 3-2 win with three minutes to go. Results were mixed thereafter and there was a novel switch as Dumbuya and Norris took each other’s role. It did not really work, and results into the start of season 2015-2016 led initially to Norris leaving then, with one match and one win (2-1 at home to Aylesbury United) with Dumbuya and recently installed coach Ahmet Akdag in charge, the appointment of exciting young manager Gary Meakin. The new man came to the club with experience at several good quality non-league clubsTwo games in Meakin guided Egham to a club record away win as they walloped Uxbridge 7-0, then recorded the same score 11 days later at Arlesey Town. Egham recorded their first ever win on the road in the FA Trophy with a 1-0 success at Slimbridge, where earlier the Sarnies went out 2-3 aet in an FA Cup replay. Egham reached half way in the 2015-2016 season in 3rd place after successive 1-0 wins against promotion rivals St Ives Town and AFC Rushden & Diamonds coming just before Christmas. The season included two 7-0 away wins at Uxbridge and Arlesey Town, and finished with the club going into the last day with everything on a knife edge. Egham were in third place when they travelled to Royston Town. Both sides were on 82 points, two behind leaders Kings Langley. When Egham took the lead the Sarnies were champions, for all of eleven minutes. Then a combination of Royston levelling and Kings Langley scoring the only goal of their game at Petersfield Town meant that the club finished third and faced St Ives Town in the play-offs. The Sarnies took the lead twice but with the score at 2-2 after extra time the visitors prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out. Finishing in third place was a superb end to a thoroughly entertaining season. Egham went in to the 2016-2017 campaign with a settled squad and embarked on a record equalling FA Cup run that saw Bracknell Town (2-1), Arundel (5-1), V C D Athletic (2-1) and Faversham Town (1-1 away, 1-0 in the replay) beaten before losing in front of a large crowd to Vanarama side St Albans City 0-1. The league results were not too bad, then a late surge saw the Sarnies on the fringe of the play-offs. That berth was secured with a win at Beaconsfield SYCOB, their last home game under that moniker, and a 2—0 win at home to Barton Rovers in the last game of the normal season led to them facing Farnborough in the play-off semi-final. However, the

7

home side were too strong for the Sarnies and prevailed 4-0. In the close season Gary Meakin quit; Chairman Pat Bennett appointed Chris Moore as his next manager. Chris, a hero since he came off the bench to score a late winner at North Greenford United towards the end of the previous season, recruited Wayne Carter from Uxbridge to be his assistant, and also Gary Farrell as his coach. He has also added to a squad depleted after Meakin’s departure with some excellent signings and the club are looking forward to the challenges of a very important season in non-league football.

ON THIS DAY 2009

Despite racing into a two-goal lead – thanks to two excellent efforts from Eugene Ofori (pictured in the game) – Northwood had to settle for a draw in this F.A. Cup first qualifying round tie against Wingate & Finchley. Woods started the game strongly, and probably should have added to their tally in the first half, before the visitors pulled one back from a controversially-awarded penalty just before the interval. Wingate levelled the scores twelve minutes into the second half, and despite both sides having chances of grabbing the winner, it’was back to Summers Lane for the replay the following Tuesday evening. CLUB MATTERS SECRETARY

ALAN EVANS Records end and also fall

Congratulations…..Oliver Hawkins

Our 3-1 success at Arlesey Town a couple of weeks ago was the club’s first away win of 2017, a run of fifteen games without success which stretched back to 28th November 2016 when we notched a 3-0 victory at Ashford Town (Middlesex). It also ended a long run of

Former Northwood striker Oliver Hawkins scored a hat-trick in that success over AFC Hayes and two weeks ago his consistent performances in the National League for Dagenham & Redbridge earned him a transfer to the Football League with Division One club Portsmouth. Allocated the number nine shirt, he was thrown straight into televised action a few days later as he made his debut for Pompey in a home game against Rotherham and in front of a crowd of 17,118. Unfortunately it was the visitors who took a surprise 1-0 victory. Ollie, now 25, joined the Woods from Hillingdon Borough in March 2011 and made a total of 111 appearances for Northwood scoring 39 goals before moving to Hemel Hempstead Town in 2013. We wish him every success as a professional footballer.

seventeen matches with a win overall. We then followed that with our Bank Holiday Monday 2-0 defeat of Hayes & Yeading United which ended a run of seven matches without a win here at Northwood Park and only our second three-pointer at home in 2017. Hopefully there were will be more of the same to follow as the season progresses. Incidentally it was also the first time that the Woods had won both games over a Bank Holiday period for five years. It was back in 2012 that we followed an FA Cup win, 5-2 at Aylesbury United with a 6-0 thrashing of AFC Hayes on the Monday.

Season Ticket Offer Once again the Club have made our cut-price season ticket available to all supporters for the new season. For only £40.00 you can gain access to all of the remaining League matches being played by the first-team this season, so less than £2.00 per match. There are application forms available in the clubhouse this week and if you fill it out and pass the money to us, you will get

entry for Saturday’s League fixture as part of the package. Alternatively you can order it direct by card at your leisure via the website. The price also includes admission to each of our Under-18s midweek youth league matches too. There are other benefits of the Season Ticket too. It gives you access to the Clubhouse at any time and also allows you to book it for private functions should you wish. We still have a few remaining Season Tickets available for collection from me this afternoon. Programme goes Digital ONLY If you were here for our opening home league games you will already be aware that if you are reading these notes in the programme, you are almost certainly reading it on your phone, tablet or on a PC screen as from the new season we are no longer producing a paper version. The League changed their rules this season to state that the need to produce a programme for each match no longer had to be a printed version and for lots of reasons, we made the decision to end it. It is a change that will be strange for both Ken Green and myself as between us we have produced virtually every printed Northwood programme since Ken first started them in the 1970s. The quality of the programme should remain much the same though and to download it will now be free so savings all round. It also makes it more available to everyone. We have already had a massive increase in downloads of people reading the programme. You can either download it in a format that is easy to read or to print it out yourself at home should that be your preference. We hope you will embrace the change and enjoy it. However, we are aware that some people would prefer it to remain a printed edition and indeed, we have even received an offer from one of our loyal and regular supporters to cover the losses that the club makes when producing a printed version. So, we will consider it further over the next few weeks but please let us know what you think,

either in person at a game or by email to the club email address [email protected] Under-18s – FA Youth Cup After a tough opening game in the newlysponsored Sportswik Isthmian Youth League which saw them crash 0-5 at home to league leaders Camberley Town, the Woods youngsters have put a couple of much better results together. A week after that opening match they took on Staines Town here at Northwood Park and recovered from conceding an early goal to win 2-1 thanks to goals from Femi Azeez and Josh Thomas. Then, last Thursday night they began their FA Youth Cup campaign with a home game against Haringey Borough. Again they went 0-1 down very early but once skipper Connor Maher had levelled with a fine strike midway through the first-half they went on to notch an excellent 5-1 success. Kyran Worrell put the game beyond our North London visitors with a hat-trick inside nine minutes to see the Woods lead 4-1 at

the break and despite visibly tiring, Ben Badal managed to add a fifth ten minutes or so before the end. They now finally face an away game in the next round – at Chesham United on Thursday 21st September but before that they have another League game at home in between our two games against Egham. That’s on Thursday 14th September when they play hosts to Bedfont Sports who still boast a 100% record so far. It’s a 7.45pm kick-off for each game and I’m sure the youngsters would appreciate your support. Groundshare – London Tigers FC You will have heard that we have allowed Spartan South Midlands League side London Tigers to have a one-year only groundshare arrangement here at

CLUB MATTERS Northwood Park this season. Their ground at Avenue Park on the Western Avenue (formerly Viking Sports) was pretty much ruined following a visit by a travelling community last season and they needed somewhere to play while they have the ground cleared and decontaminated. We had already decided to look for a new League for our reserve side after the Suburban League had involved increased travelling over the years and we have put our backing into a new Middlesex Under-23 Development League which is now planned. That doesn’t start until next season, 2018/19, so the groundshare suits all parties and next year we will revert to the important “reserve” side that will be a stepping stone between our top youth side and senior football.

free so if you can’t get along to the first-team away games then please pop along to see the Tigers. Their next fixture here at Northwood Park is on Tuesday 19th September when they take on St. Margaretsbury in a League Cup group game. Player Sponsors As the season is still fairly new, why not work out who your favourite Northwood player is and then choose to sponsor them. Elsewhere in today’s programme you can see the full squad and only a handful of players are already sponsored. It would be great to get the page filled up as early as possible this season.

Alan

Anyone with a Northwood Season Ticket can gain admission to their Spartan South Midlands League games for half-price, which will be £3.50 for adults or £3 for OAP’s. Like our own games, Under-16s are admitted

CAMBRIDGE CITY 1 NORTHWOOD

SATURDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2017 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH WESTWOOD ROAD, ST IVES

The first-ever meeting of these two sides at senior level went narrowly the way of the home side after they nosed ahead in the early stages and the Woods were just unable to peg them back in a close-fought contest, writes Alan Evans. The home side started like a train. In the very first minute Tom Knowles did well on the left and cut the ball back for Mason Spence to strike for goal and Joseph was straight into the action to dive and palm the ball over the bar. It was the full-back Spence who bombed forward again a few minutes later bit this time shot wide and then more action down that left flank saw Knowles exchange passes with Ross Paterson and force Joseph into a good stop at his near-post. And there was still only ten minutes on the clock when the pressure finally told. Joseph saved again from Ryan Sharman but the defence failed to clear and when Paterson latched onto it just outside the box the ball skidded off the wet surface and this time bounced through the hands of the diving ‘keeper. After that onslaught the Woods gradually began to get more of a grip on the game and began to threaten in attack with about half an hour on the clock. Evans Kouassi led the way with a pacy run that saw him find Meshach Williams who flicked the ball on to put Kouassi into the box. It was a great chance but he placed the ball wide of the near-post rather than shooting across goalkeeper Niall Conroy. Two minutes later the Woods won a free-kick in dangerous position but Kouassi was wide again with his effort and then there looked a certain equaliser on 36 minutes as Kouassi flew down the right, knocked in a centre that appeared to only need a touch from Martin at the far post. But he took an extra touch and was then quickly crowded out as he tried to find an angle to force the ball home when a cut back looked more favourable. Pat Adamson then got forward down the left well to feed Williams whose strike was gathered high by Conroy before Pat Kelly put in a cross which was too near the ‘keeper and then Adamson again attacked well but shot over the bar. Still the Woods swept forward and just before the break Kouassi knocked in an excellent cross which was met by Williams with a fine downward header which Conroy pushed up and onto the crossbar to keep City in the lead at half-time. The Woods were hoping for much of the same after the break but it was Cambridge who started the half better again. Joseph had to push out an accurate free-kick from Knowles and then another marauding run from Spence saw him combine with Lewis Wilson to fire for goal but again the Trinidad & Tobago Under-20s ‘keeper Joseph was equal to it. On 55 minutes Kouassi tried to go it alone, cutting in from the left and working to find some space before shooting but it was straight at the ‘keeper who saved comfortably while at the other end Joseph saved similarly from Ryan Towner’s effort. Northwood were still playing the better football but the final pass or shot seemed to be lacking. Some good work got the ball into the box and when McDonnell’s touch fell to Williams his effort was well over the bar. Then Kouassi burst down the right again and knocked in a tempting cross which eluded everyone, was scrambled out as far as Adamson but his strike was again saved by Conroy in goal. Substitutions were made on 73 minutes with Kojo Gyimah and Jean-Paul Antwi both getting their first action of the season for the Woods but it failed to refresh the Woods and actually stopped their momentum. Salim Relizani had a couple of efforts on goal which sailed wide while home substitute Oliver Snaith wasn’t far away with a low drive. Kouassi had the last chance for Northwood but he frustratingly shot wide two minutes from time and Towner went closer for City at least forcing Joseph into one last save, pushing the ball wide of the post to complete a good game for the Woods ‘keeper.

HAYES & YEADING UTD 0

NORTHWOOD PARK

By Guest Reporter Dev Bajwa Northwood looked to keep their good run of form going with a strong performance against Hayes and Yeading this bank holiday. With games coming thick and fast, the players had been instructed to play a “high pressure” game as they considered themselves the “supremely fitter” outfit when matched against their older, though more experienced, opponents. In a game, which benefitted from a very spirited start, the Northwood faithful would have been encouraged by the energetic showing of Tayshan Hayden-Smith, with the pacey attacker regularly attacking the Hayes back line in the early running. With Northwood attempting a variety of setpiece plays whenever the chance presented themselves, Hayes were well matched to deal with any pressure. The home side, however looked continually threatening with right-back Pat Kelly and marauding centre-midfielder Evans Kouassi pulling the strings, searching for that opening goal. And without either side having a clear-cut chance for the first 15 minutes, up stepped Tommy Boxer in a sea of white shirts who was able to benefit from some poor Hayes defending to head over the advancing Jack Smith to give the Woods the lead. This advantage encouraged the Woods even further to stamp their authority on the game with Wilson Chingoka and Kouassi forever causing problems for the ageing Hayes back line. Then, merely 8 minutes after conceding the first goal, the Hayes net rippled once again after a magnificent solo run from that man Kouassi before he scuffed a shot that crept past the diving Smith. 2-0 up now and the Woods are cruising to their second victory in a row, especially with the visiting crowd growing ever more restless with their Hayes players. Following a short water break it was anything but business as usual for the home side as the all-white Hayes came storming forward through Spyros Mentis and Gurkan Gokmen, the latter of whom brought out the best in goalkeeper Harry Voss just minutes before the break. The Woods went into half-time very satisfied but the same couldn’t be said for their opponents. My guess is their manager must have riled them up at half time as Hayes came storming out the blocks at the beginning of the second half. But each time they were confronted by the man-mountain that is Harry Voss who was dealing with everything comfortably. The same must also be said for Barnet loanee Lewis Hobbs who showed what his parent club was missing after some excellent positional play to deny and frustrate the opposition. Such frustration became apparent in Hayes’ own captain, Mentis who, after having already been booked in the first half for a late challenge on Williams, was flirting with the law again with a few late challenges flying about the pitch. Hayes were as lucky to end the game with 11 men as Northwood were to get their clean sheet. And in the end, a result that warrants Voss’ outstanding performance in goal, the Woods came away with a 2-0 victory to the delight of the West London faithful. www.northwoodfc.com

Alan Evans looks back at Northwood events of a decade ago PHOTOS by PAUL EVANS

T

his week we continue with our popular feature where we look back to events here at Northwood Park from exactly a decade ago. This means our first season back at Step 4 of non-League following the firstever relegation in the senior club’s history as we succumbed to the drop in our second season of Southern Premier Division football having been transferred across following two years of Isthmian Premier competition.

There had been yet another surprise from the FA during the summer. We had expected to remain in the Southern League with relegation to play alongside the likes of Hillingdon Borough and Brook House who were both in the then South & West Division of the Southern but no, the FA had other ideas once again and

title-favourites Canvey Island and at newlypromoted Brentwood Town. Next up was a midweek home game against fellow Middlesex side Enfield Town and there were a number of changes made following the poor result at Brentwood. The main addition was a starting debut for ex-Orient YTS midfielder Phil Holder but it wasn’t to be a successful experiment as he was replaced at half-time by former QPR youngster Chris Mills and by then the visitors were a goal up – James Dickie heading a corner past goalkeeper Liam Watson who was making his first start of the season. When Rudi Hall fired in an unstoppable freekick just four minutes after the restart it seemed that another defeat was on the cards for the Woods as Enfield continued to dominate and it got worse on 61 minutes when Richard Georgiou spotted Watson off his line and scored a third with a delightful lob. The introduction of the experienced striker John Lawford as a substitute did seem to kickstart Northwood into action though and just five minutes later Jermaine Hamilton controlled a ball over the top with some expertise before thrashing home his first goal for the club. It was a bit of a purple patch for Hamilton as he had three more chances in quick succession but unfortunately found goalkeeper Charlie Hassler in fine form in the Enfield goal. The Woods were almost gifted a second goal with ten minutes to

we found ourselves back in the arms of the Isthmian League and in Division One North with many trips round the M25 and into Essex! Our tenants Wealdstone had also been moved and would start their third and final season sharing Northwood Park with us in the Isthmian Premier where we would have loved to have stayed a couple of years earlier. And after the first three games the Woods had picked up just one point from a 1-1 draw at Waltham Forest while losing at home to

22

Northwood v Egham Town

TEN YEARS AFTER go as Hassler’s clearance rebounded off Lawford and was heading for goal before being cleared off the line by Dickie. So the Woods were still looking for their first league win of the season as they started out on their FA Cup campaign with a home game against Uxbridge on Saturday 1st September 2007 – ten years ago this week. And of course the two sides were fated to meet in the prestigious cup competition as former Northwood manager Tony Choules – following short spells in charge of Hendon, Hornchurch, Leyton and Maidenhead United – had taken charge at Uxbridge the previous year. His side included a heavy sprinkling of ex-Northwood players including the likes of Rob Bullivant, Danny Yeoman, Mark Dennison, Mark Nicholls and Dave Nolan while Gary Farrell, who had been instrumental in bringing current Woods manager Colin Payne to the club, had also left to join Choules as his first-team coach. A browse through the match-day programme, more specifically the “Ten Years After” article, made reference to something we have seen covered on TV during the last week – the untimely death of Princess Diana – which is now twenty years ago. And twenty years ago this week the Saturday fixtures were all postponed due to the funeral taking place. The Woods switched their trip to Cheshunt to the Sunday and it ended in a lacklustre 0-0 draw. The programme also reported that Colin Payne had appointed a new team of people to look after both the reserves Capital League side and the Under-18s in the Allied Counties League. Mark Barnham had made the switch from North Greenford to take over the Capital League side while Tony Day would be in charge of the younger team. They were to be assisted by Alan Groves, Mark Pye, Gez Reilly and Phil Hatcher.

It had been seven years since the Woods had enjoyed their best-ever run in the FA Cup, ultimately losing to Grays Athletic in a fourth qualifying round replay and losing out on a trip to Reading and that season had seen the Woods defeat Uxbridge 5-1 in an earlier qualifying round so a similar result would have been hoped for as they met once again! Uxbridge went into the game with a 100% league record compared to Northwood being winless after four games but the Woods had a boost as Elliott Buchanan returned to the starting line-up after illness and there was a debut for former Harrow Borough winger Abdulai Yoki. And the Woods started well with the pace of Jermaine Hamilton and Jerome Hall causing problems for the visitors. Hall was denied by Bullivant early on but after 17 minutes Hamilton raced down the left and knocked in a cross which Hall deflected to spin across goal and just inside the post for the opening goal. Uxbridge threatened to equalise many times but this was a determined Northwood side and both Dean Clark and Terry Hogan were well placed to head off the line each time goalkeeper Liam Watson was beaten. Tackles flew in and the Woods lost both Hall and Adam Theo to injury but they were not to be denied and in the final twenty minutes it was Northwood that dominated and they held on to the narrow 1-0 win comfortably. It would be away to Boreham Wood in the next round of the FA Cup but for now the Woods were celebrating an excellent victory. We will have more from Ten Years After in our next programme.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds lost their first game last Saturday, beaten 2-1 at Hayden Road in front of 429 against Beaconsfield Town. And the visitors had to come back from being a 37th minute Darryl Smith goal down to win, thanks to Elliott Carey after 63 minutes and Charlie Losasso 6 minutes from time. There are still four sides in the division yet to find a win in 2017/18; Arlesey Town, Aylesbury FC, Fleet Town and Hanwell Town all lost again on Saturday, with Arlesey going down 3-2 at home to newly-promoted Thame United, whose Lynton Goss bagged a brace and Daniel West the other – all after a Yemi Adelani brace had put the hosts 2-1 ahead. The Moles lost 4-1 at the Runnymede Stadium to Egham Town, whose Ryan Debattista topped and tailed Brendan Matthew and Mitch Wiseman efforts after Jon Montgomery had given the visitors an 11th minute lead. Fleet lost 3-1 at Hayes & Yeading United, whose Phil Appiah after 6 minutes, Spyros Mentis on 58 minutes and Andrew Ofosu 9 minutes later all found the mark. Newly-promoted Moneyfields are now the only unbeaten team in the division after they hammered Barton Rovers 5-1 at home with goals from Ryan Pennery in the 33rd and 81st minutes, sandwiched by a Steve Hutchings brace and one from Joe Briggs. AFC Dunstable top the fledgling table after beating Marlow 2-1 at Creasey Park, courtesy of a Nathan Frater brace Jordace Holder-Spooner replying.
