elcome back to Northwood Park this evening, and we are pleased to see all our supporters new and old, and also extend our welcome all connected with Uxbridge FC; we trust they enjoy their stay with us and have a safe journey home later.

Like ourselves, Uxbridge have hovered around or just below mid-table throughout the campaign so far, and we managed to achieve a self-inflicted defeated at Honeycroft back in September; a late aberration by debutant goalkeeper Andrew McCorkell cost him a red card and the Woods a share of the points as the home side won 2-1. Meshach Williams had put the Woods ahead shortly after the interval, the Uxbridge goals coming from Dave Thomas and Anthony Thomas. A couple of recent home games have seen the Woods slip to defeat due to late goals. A month ago, it was Chalfont St Peter who grabbed the points by scoring in the 87th and 94th minutes, then in our last fixture at Chestnut Avenue ten days ago, Bedford Town upset us all in a similar fashion – netting their late, late winner on the 95 minutes mark. There is a message to the squad there, and I’m sure that the management team are working through it with them… After the entire Southern League programme was wiped out by the snow at the weekend, along with many games at all levels throughout the country, there has fortunately been a rapid upturn in temperature over the past two or three days. Hopefully this evening’s game will go ahead as planned and will not be affected by the waterlogging which often follows freezing. This is the second programme versus Uxbridge I have put together over the past month – and I do not want there to be a third!! Thanks for your support here this evening; this really is appreciated by us all. Next Saturday, we are back in action at Northwood Park, with another Middlesex derby – this time the visitors are the club we have played more times than any other in our history, Hanwell Town. Kick-off is at 3.00 p.m. as usual; we hope to see you then!

ood evening and welcome to Chestnut Avenue for this Evo-Stik League fixture. We extend our welcome to our visitors from Uxbridge FC and trust you enjoy your short stay here.

My notes today are dedicated to the memory of three young men who were tragically killed in Hayes recently. The club held the funeral receptions for Harry Rice, 17 and Josh McGuinness, 16, last Wednesday. Having met with the families a few times and spent time with them, there are truly no words that can describe their devastation. On behalf of myself and all at the club, it was an honour to have you here in the worst possible circumstances. All of our thoughts and prayers are with you and we will have our own tribute here this evening. The families and many friends released balloons from the pitch and it may be that you have seen one around. The other boy who also died at the scene was George Wilkinson, 16, whose funeral was held the week before. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Up the Woods!

CLUB MATTERS

ALAN EVANS Re-arrangements Thankfully the snowy weather only led to the one postponed fixture for the Woods and that was Saturday’s away game against Aylesbury United. That has now been re-arranged for Wednesday night, 21st March 2018 to be played at Chesham United FC and with a kick-off at 7.45pm. It is the only other midweek game we have to play (apart from Easter Monday) so make a note in your diary.

Wingate & Finchley and is a third-year scholar with the Orient, possessing a squad number (32). He is joined by teammate Andrew CamiloTayaca, an 18-year old defender who is a second-year scholar, and is pictured below. Both have settled in well in the last couple of games.

Annual Community Club Day This year the club’s Annual Community Club Day will take place on the date of our last home game of the season – Saturday 21st April 2018 – which will include “Pay What You Can” admission to our fixture against Thame United that afternoon. As last year, there will be an Under-6s Festival of Football staged in the park in the morning and we are hopeful that all of our youth teams will be represented during the afternoon as we look to take our usual whole “One Club” photograph. Other events will be advised nearer the time. Player News There has still been plenty of comings and goings, keeping me busy with registrations and loan forms to both league and the FA in recent weeks. We have now registered no less than 77 different players this season and it’s hard to keep track of them all sometimes!

Another youngster who has made a couple of substitute appearances recently is more homegrown. Femi Azeez is still only sixteen but has been impressing all season for our Under-18s and has not looked out of place, especially when he came on against Chalfont St. Peter.

However, a few new players have come into the squad in the last few games. Two youngsters have joined on Work Experience terms from National League side Leyton Orient. Midfielder Charley Barker is 19 and has just completed a several month with Isthmian Premier side

Defender Hamilton Bunga is 22 years old but has recently played for Thurrock, Kingstonian, Ware, Arlesey Town and Royston Town before joining the Woods. Another youngster, striker Ned Clarke signed on a month’s loan for the Woods earlier this week from Wingate &

Finchley where he has been a regular goalscorer for their Under-23 side. He has just had a similar loan spell at Hanwell Town and is another 18-year-old. With Xavi Comas unavailable against Barton Rovers two weeks ago, we brought in our tenth goalkeeper of the season in 32-year-old Ashley Harris who was playing for Haringey Borough earlier in the season, playing in their FA Trophy fixture against Leyton Orient. Ashley is not completely new to Northwood as he played the first three games of our 2007/08 season more than a decade ago. We were also delighted to secure the services of central defender Sam Tring on a month’s loan from Evo-Stik South Premier side Kings Langley and he has been particularly impressive in the last few matches. Sam is 20-years-old and had previously played for Luton Town Cedars before joining Kings Langley and has made over 30 appearances for the Hertfordshire club. That loan spell came to an end on Saturday but we are hoping to have signed Sam up for a further month prior to tonight’s fixture. Finally, for our home match against Bedford Town we were able to welcome back young defender Lewis Hobbs to the club after his short spell with Southern Premier side Royston Town. Some players have also left the club. Goalkeeper Brendan Hazlett, who did really well for the Woods before going away for Christmas, has re-joined Beaconsfield Town. Matt Nolan, who made one appearance in goal for our game at Hayes & Yeading, has joined up with former boss Simon Lane at Egham Town while left-back Romelle Alomenu has returned to Royston Town this week. Lewis Ochoa is currently in Australia while Michael Buckley has decided to take a break from football for a while. Kojo Gyimah is currently on dual-registration playing for Cockfosters. Lastly, it was good to see Pat Adamson back on his feet at the last couple of home matches. It’s been three months since Pat suffered his broken leg at AFC Rushden & Diamonds following his

excellent start to the season and he is now on the road to recovery. The good news is that Jake is hoping to have a more settled side for the rest of the season! Other Hidden tables We may all get to see where we currently sit in the East Division table but there are always other tables available which give a different perspective of how we at Northwood FC are doing! The current attendance table, published by the Evo-Stik League, shows the league based on average attendances and after a series of disappointing crowds for our last few home matches, the Woods have dropped to thirteenth place in that one with an average of 110 at present. Our top league attendance so far was 243 while the lowest crowd is now just 71. As they do in the League table, AFC Rushden & Diamonds lead the way with attendances too, currently averaging 486; some 250 more than Bedford Town in second place. Tonight’s visitors Uxbridge are one place above us with an average of 111. Chalfont St. Peter are currently the lowest supported with an average of just 79 despite their recent good form. The League also produce a far-play table each week which takes into consideration cautions & dismissals throughout the season and the Woods are currently 3rd best in that table while today’s visitors Uxbridge are down in 17th place, some ninety points worse off. Leaders now are Cambridge City ahead of Aylesbury United. Finally, we can also view the “Respect Awards” table, sponsored by the Football Factory. Points can be picked up in each game for behaviour of Club officials & team benches, Dressing Rooms and Hospitality shown to Officials while at the club while deductions are made for dissent cautions or dismissals due to Foul & Abusive language. There is a new leader in this one as Aylesbury United have gone ahead of Barton Rovers though the Ducks have played more home games where more points are scored. We have risen slightly to sixteenth place but Uxbridge are doing very well in third. Programme goes Digital ONLY We are well into the season so you should be aware by now that if you are reading these notes in the programme, you are almost certainly reading it on your phone, tablet

CLUB MATTERS or on a PC screen as from the new season we are no longer producing a paper version. The League changed their rules this season to state that the need to produce a programme for each match no longer had to be a printed version and for lots of reasons, we made the decision to end it. It is a change that has been strange for both Ken Green and myself as between us we have produced virtually every printed Northwood programme since Ken first started them in the 1970s. We hope that the quality of the programme has remained much the same though and to download it is now free so savings all round. It also makes it more available to everyone. We have already had a massive increase in downloads of people reading the programme. You can either download it in a format that is easy to read or to print it out yourself at home should that be your preference. We hope you will embrace the change and enjoy it. However, we are aware that some people would prefer it to remain a printed edition and indeed, we even received an offer from one of our loyal and regular supporters to cover the losses that the club makes when producing a printed version. So, we will consider it further over the rest of the season but please let us know what you think, either in person at a game or by email to the club email address enquiries@northwoodfc. com

They were 2-0 down early on levelled things up before half-time with goals from Anthony Amankwa and Morgan Whittick. Staines then regained the lead only for Stanley Anum to make it 3-3 and then Aaron Feeney grabbed the late winner. On the next Wednesday night they attempted to follow that up in a tough away game at Wealdstone but crashed to their equal heaviest defeat of the season, losing 6-1. They are scheduled to play away at Hendon tomorrow night, 7th March 2018. They are not due back here until just before Easter. Meanwhile, a similar Under-17s side made it through to the Final of the Middlesex County Sunday Under-18s Youth Cup with a 5-3 victory over Headstone Manor. Connor Maher (below) netted a hat-trick and there was one each for Femi Azeez and Kyran Worrell. The final will take place on Thursday 26th April at a venue and against opponents yet to be decided but will be one of Harefield United U-18s, Ruislip Rangers U-18s, Acton & Ealing Whistlers U-17s or Conquest U-18s. Groundshare – London Tigers FC The Tigers recently ended a run of five successive defeats with a much-needed 2-1 win away at Biggleswade to move them away from the wrong end of the table. Their last two home games have been postponed and they are now scheduled to take place in late April.

Alan

Under-18s – First away win for two years The Under-18s have been back in action in recent weeks with a string of three matches. They were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by bottom club Ashford Town (Middlesex) but then made up for that by notching their first away win in the Sportswik Isthmian Youth League for two years when they came from behind to win 4-3 at Staines Town. www.northwoodfc.com

BEDFORD TOWN 2

SATURDAY 24TH FEBRUARY 2018 EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH NORTHWOOD PARK

he Woods were left dejected as in-form Bedford Town grabbed a winning goal in the fifth minute T of stoppage-time having worked hard to pull level and earn a point with a late equaliser, writes Alan Evans. Young defender Lewis Hobbs was back in the side after a short spell with Southern Premier outfit Royston Town, which allowed Tom Gilbey to move to left-back, Andrew Camilo Tayaca to switch over to right-back and Isaac Olorunfemi took a more attacking role in place of unavailable Harry Newman. Jermaine Osei was back up front after another spell out with his hamstring problem. Bedford had notched seven wins in their last seven league games and were building for a late push for the play-offs. And the Eagles were almost in front after just twelve seconds as Wilson Chingoka lost possession in midfield and a quick through-ball put in Paul Benson. The former Dagenham & Redbridge striker, currently on loan to Bedford from National League side Boreham Wood, shot low and well but the ball came back off the far post. The Woods rallied quickly though and after eight minutes a goalmouth scramble led to the ball falling to Osei but he hit a tame shot straight at goalkeeper Kyle Forster. There was a further opportunity on 14 minutes when Camilo Tayaca knocked in an excellent cross from the right which picked out Meshach Williams but his header was also gratefully clutched by Forster, who didn’t have to move. Bedford countered again with a good ball from Devante Stanley picking out Jimmy Hartley but his shot was saved at the near post by Xavi Comas and the Woods keeper denied Hartley again a few minutes later after the Bedford attacker cut in from the flank. The Eagles were then almost ahead after 30 minutes as Hartley combined with Callum Donnelly and he chipped into the box where Benson’s header was pushed away by an excellent reaction save from Comas. Bedford continued to dominate towards the end of the first half but the closest they came was when Ollie Swain hammered a shot wide after a corner dropped to him and then Bradley WoodsGarness had a tame shot comfortably saved by Comas. The Woods looked dangerous on the counter with Evans Kouassi and Isaac Olorunfemi threatening but the final ball lacked quality. The Eagles were still flying at the start of the second half. A Stanley shot curled wide and then Woods-Garness hooked over but after 55 minutes a free-kick conceded by Hobbs close to the corner-flag was drilled to the near-post where Steve Gentle added a glancing header which gave Bedford the lead. Ned Clarke replaced an out-of-sorts Chingoka after 61 minutes and the Woods enjoyed a good spell as they looked for an equaliser. Clarke had an effort blocked and when Osei turned the ball back into the area Charley Barker’s strike took a deflection but went straight to Forster once again. With ten minutes to go Stanley played a good ball through to Benson but some good defending denied him a shot at goal and three minutes later the Woods should have been level. A quick counter from a Bedford corner saw Williams feed Kouassi and his cross found substitute Paolo Montella in space but he blasted his shot well over with just Forster to beat. It seemed that the chance of a draw had gone but just two minutes later Kouassi centred from the left and after Bedford failed to clear, Williams latched onto the loose ball and tucked a shot inside the post to make it 1-1. The Woods appeared to be defending well and holding onto a good point until the Eagles swooped for the winner just before the final whistle. Stanley played a neat ball through to substitute Lee Roache who managed to get into the area before squaring the ball to where Benson was lurking and he poked the ball home to the delight of the visiting fans.

WELCOME TO

UXBRIDGE xbridge Football Club was founded in U 1871 and became founder members of the Southern League in 1894. They reached the final of the FA Amateur Cup in 1897–98, losing to Middlesbrough at Crystal Palace. In the 1906–07 season the club joined the Great Western Combination League and then the Athenian League in 1919 after World War I. In 1939 the club re-joined the Great Western Combination League and continued to play during World War II, before joining the London League in the 1944–45 season and transferring to the Corinthian League after two seasons. The 1959–60 season was a particularly successful season with the club being champions of the Corinthian League. This was a successful period in the clubs history as they finished in the top five of the Corinthian League on no less than eight occasions and crowds were averaging around the thousand mark. In 1963 the club were once again in Division One of the Athenian League, but this was a lean time for The Reds, they were relegated to Division Two in 1967 and financial problems beset them. Uxbridge gained national publicity in 1976 when England were looking for a side to play as part of their warm-up for the forthcoming World Cup campaign. Uxbridge took on a full strength

England at Wembley, losing 8-0. The club won the Middlesex Charity Cup for the fourth time in 1982, their first silverware for 22 years, and moved to the Isthmian League in the same year, winning promotion to Division One in 1985. The Final of the AC Delco League Cup was reached in 1986, where they met Premier Division champions Sutton United. The Reds failed to stop Sutton completing “The Double” though, losing 3-1 in the Final in front of over a thousand spectators at Imber Court. Uxbridge entered the London Challenge Cup for the first time in the 1992/93 season and in the eight seasons they entered the competition the Reds reached five finals, winning on three occasions, in 1994, 1997 and 2000. In 2001 the Middlesex Senior Cup was won for the fourth time; Harrow Borough were defeated 3-0 in the Final held at Honeycroft. 2004 saw the club moved across the pyramid to the Southern League and have reached the play-offs on three occasions. In 2004/05 they lost on penalties to Maldon Town, 2007/08 saw them lose to Oxford City, and in 2012 they lost to Bedworth United. During the last 40 years Uxbridge have had

only five different managers. Ron Clack was in charge for 18 years from 1970, followed by Peter Marshall for one season, Michael Harvey for three before George Talbot took the reins for 14 seasons in 1992.

he Sky TV cameras captured the biggest win of the F.A. Cup third qualifying round when they came to Northwood back in 2000, with Woods – managed by Tony Choules – romping to victory against their close rivals, but it was against the run of play when they took the lead on 39 minutes. Dave Nolan found Lawrence Yaku on the right and he danced past defenders Mark Weedon and Cleary and across the penalty area before firing home.

Suddenly the Woods had their tails up and they went further ahead two minutes later when Yaku’s back-heel found Steve Hale, and his shot whistled past Dawson, courtesy of a deflection. Damage limitation seemed to be the order of the day for Uxbridge until half-time but the plan failed; in the first minute of stoppagetime, Dave Sargent curled in a corner and Rene Street made no mistake with a powerful header from close-range. If Uxbridge were to give themselves any chance of a comeback in the second half, they needed an early goal, and they did pull one back after 56 minutes when a quick break found Chris Moore in acres of space and he raced into the box before finishing clinically with a shot into the roof of the net. As the game progressed, it was Northwood who took full control again with Yaku, despite being up front on his own, causing the visiting defence serious problems. On 84 minutes Yaku robbed Stuart Bamford of the ball out wide and raced towards goal; the Uxbridge defender tried to pull him back but he kept his balance and composure to shoot past Dawson and put the tie beyond the reach of Uxbridge.

Northwood: Paul Riordan, Andy Sherry (Gary Issott), Gary Williams, Danny Butler, Rene Street, Dave Sargent, Dave Nolan, Chris Gell, Steve Hale (Craig McIntosh), Lawrence Yaku (Scott Fitzgerald), Mark Hook.

And four minutes later Yaku was at it again, twisting and turning against Cleary and the Woods striker took the ball on, dummied Dawson and shot home from a tight angle to completed an excellent hat-trick. The final

orthwood’s recent barren spell continued as they shared the points with Barton Rovers who belied their lowly league position with a spirited second-half performance at Chestnut Avenue, writes Robin Piper. There were a couple of changes to the team which lost at Marlow, goalkeeper Ashley Harris returning to Northwood as stand-in for Xavi Comas, while there was a debut in attack for Ned Clarke who replaced Dernell Wynter following his arrival from Hanwell Town. The Woods were quickly into their strides, Evans Kouassi trying his luck from distance before Harry Newman drew a save from visiting keeper Matt Finlay with a close-range shot. And the early pressure persisted as Tom Gilbey went close with an inventive volley from the edge of the box which flew narrowly over the Barton crossbar. The visitors gradually began to settle and they spurned a golden opportunity to take the lead as Sam Oyineran shot wide from close in before Harris was called into action to deal with a long-rang effort from Ben Sawyer. However, it was the Woods who went ahead on 37 minutes when a slick move ended with Kouassi applying the finishing touch for his fifth league goal of the season. Northwood continued to enjoy the majority of the play, with Charley Barker pulling the strings in midfield. But despite their dominance, Woods were struggling to create clear-cut chances, with Chingoka’s shot from outside the box comfortably dealt with by Finlay. And it was Barton who finished the first period on the front foot as Oyineran flashed a shot across the face of goal before Harris produced a smart save to divert Paul Andrew’s header over the bar. The second half was slow to warm up before Kouassi livened up proceedings with a shot from the edge of the box which was well saved by Finlay. But Rovers were visibly growing more confident and they deservedly drew level on 58 minutes as Harris was left flat-footed by Jack Keating’s low drive from outside the box.

Paolo Montella was introduced for Clarke on the hour as Woods looked to freshen up their attack and the substitute was quickly into the action as his low cross found Kouassi, whose snap-shot was turned away by Finlay. At the other end, Harris dealt with a speculative strike from Hugh AlbanJones. Harry Newman made way for Hakim Nyariki while Declan Nche replaced a tiring Chingoka, but Northwood were struggling to make any real impression. And it was the visitors with former Wood Romaine Walker on as substitute, who were looking more threatening as Alban-Jones shot wide when well placed before Andrew Phillips found himself with only Harris to beat but he scuffed his shot and the chance was gone. Despite their efforts, Woods were growing increasingly ineffective in the final third and the contest gradually petered with both sides settling for a share of the spoils.

Woods pressed from the start to no avail throughout the opening 45, but three minutes after the restart Chris Seeby’s deflected shot looped over keeper Hasell into the net. But the struggling visitors gave Woods a scare when they drew level on 75 minutes, substitute Aaron Scott converting the loose ball after keeper Bobby Smith had fumbled Knight’s free-kick. TALKING POINT I

From THE NON LEAGUE PAPER’s

DAVID RICHARDSON

t’s the biggest shake-up in the Non-League game since 2004… and now the FA has revealed what it might look like.. From 2018/19, an extra division will be added at Steps 3 and 4.

The FA’s Leagues Committee has released provisional Step 3 and 4 league boundaries ahead of next season’s National League System restructuring.

At their meeting on February 6, the Committee decided the principles to be applied when allocating clubs at the two steps. The Committee decision was taken after hearing the results of two exercises, the first using the tables at the end of last season (2016/17) and the second based on the tables as of 2nd January 2018. It is emphasised by the FA that, for the time being, this is a guide only and they have deliberately not included names of clubs because the full allocation can only be made when the identities of the constituent clubs are known. It is clarified that this is for season 2018/19 and the make-up of clubs in future seasons may alter this approach. At Step 3, the decision is to implement a north division, a central ‘band’ from the east coast to the west of Birmingham, together with south west and south east divisions, as shown in The NLP’s graphic below. The Southern League is to administer the pink and yellow areas, the Isthmian League the green area and the Northern Premier League to administer the area coloured black. At Step 4, the seven areas will be divided as shown in The NLP’s graphic below. The Isthmian League has responsibility for the green, blue and orange areas, the Southern League administers the yellow and pink areas and the Northern Premier League in the area coloured black. The Northern Premier League is calling a meeting of its clubs to decide whether to remain with a north/south split or to change to an east/west allocation.

Alan Evans looks back at Northwood events of a decade ago PHOTOS by JAMES BROWN

T

onight we continue with our popular feature where we look back to events here at Northwood Park from exactly a decade ago. This has meant a review of our first season back at Step 4 of non-League following the first-ever relegation in the senior club’s history as we succumbed to the drop in our second season of Southern Premier Division football having been transferred across following two years of Isthmian Premier competition.

first-ever time in 2007. Victories over Hayes & Yeading and Edgware Town had earned them a semi-final fixture against Ryman Premier side Hendon and on Tuesday 19th February 2008, that took place at Northwood Park. A series of injuries, illness, suspension and cup-tied players meant that Colin Payne had to dig deep into his squad for the match though and the Woods got off to the worst possible start as Casey McLaren fired in off the post to give the Greens a ninth minute lead.

After a slow start to the season, there had been an upsurge in fortunes as we passed halfway. Firstly a series of solid home wins was followed by a brilliant FA Trophy replay win over Isthmian Premier side AFC Hornchurch and then the first away league win of the season, a 3-1 success at league leaders AFC Sudbury with 18-year-old Elliott Buchanan netting his first Northwood hat-trick, taking his tally to six goals in three

Northwood battled hard though and had a great opportunity to level seven minutes later as Phil Turner was hauled back in the box and a penalty awarded. But Ryan Tackley’s spot-kick was comfortably saved by Luke Blackmore in the Hendon goal. Former Bulgarian international Lubomir Guentchev then went very close to adding a second goal only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle from Adam Theo. Jerome Hall missed a good chance having run half the length of the pitch but Hendon dominated up to half-time with Mitch Swain making a series of saves to keep his side in the game. Danny Brown replaced Turner at half-time and the Woods looked more dangerous after the restart with Dwain Williams going close on two occasions. But Hendon still looked threatening as well and

games and into double figures for the season; the boy was getting noticed and he then signed for Conference side Stevenage Borough in January! When we left the story last, after a 0-0 draw at in-form Aveley, the Woods had lost just once (at leaders Dartford) in fifteen matches and had secured a safe mid-table position. It was about carrying on that run and finishing as high in the table as possible. There was also still the Middlesex Senior Cup to compete in, looking to defend the trophy a very young Northwood side had won for the

TEN YEARS AFTER from time from substitute Iavor Guentchev to seal their place in the Senior Cup Final. Four days later it was back to Northwood Park for a League game against second-placed AFC Sudbury who the Woods had managed to win away at for their first league away win of the season back in November. It was still the only time that Sudbury had lost at home all season so they were certainly looking for revenge. Browsing the programme for the match, there’s a note that our bar staff member Patsy Harris was thanking people for coming to her 60th birthday party held at the club. Just a couple of weeks ago, Patsy celebrated her 70th birthday at the club in similar fashion!

headers while Abdul Yoki forced ‘keeper Nathan Munson into a flying save. And Yoki then wasted a golden opportunity, put through on goal by Hall but he delayed his shot too long and was denied by a last-gasp tackle. The visitors defence proved too tough to penetrate as the game wore on and in fact it was Sudbury who went closest in the final stages, Heath rolling a shot inches wide of the post. It was a rare home defeat for the Woods.

The Woods were unbeaten at home since November and welcomed Bradley Hewitt, John Christian and Matt Baxter back to the starting

line-up. The first-half proved to be a closefought battle with neither side creating many chances in front of goal. Baxter had a flicked header saved while Jerome Hall fired a firsttime shot over the bar. For the visitors, Stuart Broadley blazed wide when well-placed and Mitch Swain saved bravely at the feet of Gareth Heath. But just five minutes after the break, AFC Sudbury grabbed a crucial lead when Heath headed home a Matty Clements cross to put the Suffolk side in front. The Woods responded on the hour by bringing on Lee Holland for Dwane Williams and this allowed Christian to move into his usual midfield role. The Woods looked more dangerous and dominated possession with Hewitt going close with a couple of

A week later, Colin Payne’s side looked to put that setback behind them away at struggling Wingate & Finchley. Lee Holland started instead of Dwane Williams while Danny Murphy was ruled out with injury and was replaced by new signing Manny Sackey at left-back. The opening half-hour was fairly uninspiring with neither goalkeeper being tested and it wasn’t until the final minute of the first-half that the Woods managed to break the deadlock. Michael Gordon capitalised on a defensive error and raced through before rounding goalkeeper Gavin King and applying a cool finish. However, the home side dominated the game after the break with a disjointed Northwood side barely venturing into their opponents half. Mitch Swain had to be at his best to keep them at bay though and a few missed chances also meant the Woods stayed ahead. Dwain Williams picked up a second yellow card late in the game for Northwood’s first red card of the season but the ten men held on to the narrow 1-0 victory. We will have more from everything Ten Years After in our next programme.

EVO-STIK LEAGUE, SOUTH

ROUND-UP

With a white-out at the weekend, we look at the previous Saturday’s games in the Evo-Stik League South East, when only AFC Dunstable and Chalfont St Peter managed to win in the top six. Leaders AFC Rushden & Diamonds suffered defeat for the first time in twenty league and cup games as they went down 2-1 at the Runnymede Stadium to an Egham Town side who hadn’t won in nine! An Ashley Lodge goal after 20 minutes gave the Sarnies a lead that Joel Gyasi cancelled out in the 40th minute. But Egham were only on level terms for 2 minutes as Michael Kalu restored their lead – and it was one they held.

Second-placed Beaconsfield Town were beaten by the odd goal in seven by Diamonds’ neighbours Kempston Rovers at Hillgrounds. Robbie Goodman netted a hat-trick for the Walnut Boys, with Tre Mitford and Callum Webb reducing the deficit to one. Ben Shepherd made it 4-2 in the 78th minute, and Kempston survived, despite an 86th minute third from Luke Neville.

Hartley Wintney went down 3-1 at Chalfont, whose Jake Cass gave them an early 8th minute lead. Alan Hedley added a second after 23 minutes and after Tyron Smith had reduced the deficit nine minutes later, a Ryan Haugh goal 18 minutes from time settled the points in the Saints favour. Hayes & Yeading United were the other top six side to lose as they lost 2-1 at home to Ashford Town. Goals in the opening 7 minutes from James Cottee and Romario Jonas stunned the hosts, whose Manny Duku replied after 21 minutes. AFC Dunstable beat Uxbridge 2-1 at Creasey Park with a Terry Griffiths brace on 33 and 70 minutes sandwiched by a 62nd minute Dylan Kearney reply. Cambridge City lost 1-0 at Thame United, whose Dan West scored the only goal after 16 minutes. Early season leaders Moneyfields won 2-0 at struggling Aylesbury FC with goals from Steve Hutchings after 43 minutes and a late Howard Neighbour effort. Bottom side Arlesey Town are looking like needing snookers to avoid the drop after losing 2-0 at home to Aylesbury United, whose Sonny French bagged a brace in the 27th and 38th minutes. It didn’t help Arlesey’s cause that second-bottom Barton Rovers found some form to beat Marlow 4-0 at Sharpenhoe Road with goals from Robbie Parsons in the first half and Andrew Phillips, Ben Sawyer and Danny Jarvis in the second. Third-bottom Fleet Town shared a 0-0 draw at Calthorpe Park with Hanwell Town. www.northwoodfc.com
