Message of the Director Dear
Colleagues
and
Partners,
Last week we celebrated World Press Freedom Day and UNESCO was closely involved in celebrating it in Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Tanzania.
Moreover, the office also
contributed towards the main event that took place in Accra, Ghana on 2 to 3 May 2018 in leading the parallel Session on National Mechanisms for Safety of Journalists. As a result, the African Union announced the creation of a working group on safety of journalists and a platform to present safety of journalists concerns under the African Union Peace and Security Council. This week Rwanda is hosting the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development from 7 to 8 May 2018 and UNESCO will be represented by the Deputy Director General at this important event. ITU and UNESCO jointly established the Broadband Commission in 2010 with an aim to expand broadband access in every country — at all stages of development — to support achievement of the internationally agreed Development Goals. In Kenya, UNESCO is organizing a Regional workshop Advancing Education for Sustainable Development Policies in Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya from 8 to 10 May 2018. The workshop will provide technical support to Member States to integrate the ESD (target 4.7) through formal, non-formal and informal education structures in order to ensure quality and inclusive education and lifelong learning for sustainable development and societies. All the Education National Programme Officers will be in Nairobi and will provide national backstopping for implementation of this very important priority. I
wish
you
a
productive
week
!
