Message of the Director Dear

Colleagues

and

Partners,

Last week, from 21 to 23 May 2018, I attended the R/UNDG Meeting for Southern and Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, where a lot of emphasis was laid on UNRCs and UNCTs positioning for results. Important reflections on the positioning of the R/UNDG within the UN wide reform has led to a number of proposals on the need to establish compacts with RCs at the country levels as well as compacts with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). These collaborative frameworks are important to ensure that the UN engagements with governments, the African Union, and its Regional Economic

Communities

On 21 May UNESCO celebrated World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, in Rwanda, with a national workshop on Media Diversity and Cultural Pluralism, where the 2018 Global Report on Reshaping Cultural Policies was presented. Many young people and stakeholders participated, showing interest in the inter-sectorial work of Culture and Communication and Information, in cultural (music, film industry, art) and investigative cultural journalism using digital platforms and technologies. It was also an opportunity to highlight the engagement of a wide range of ministries involved in implementing the Rwanda Culture Policy, through the 2005 UNESCO Convention for the Protection and Promotion

Diversity

Expressions.

UNESCO also participated in a consultation and experience-sharing workshop between the Horn of Africa and the Sahel Region on Peace-building and Prevention of Violent Extremism through Education at the African

Union

in

Addis

Ababa,

Ethiopia.

I also hope that you enjoyed World Africa Day, which we celebrated in a twitter campaign around the seven Aspirations of the Agenda 2063 of the African Union, with UNESCO work in Eastern Africa. Next week on 29 May 2018, the Regional Office for Eastern Africa will review the first quarter of the work carried out in Eastern Africa region and we look forward to fruitful engagements around the impact of I
