As part of my MLM prospecting routine, I usually turn to Facebook for free leads. Facebook has over 1.3 billion people that all give away their occupation, hobbies, friends and daily activities on their profiles! Most network marketers don’t realize what a huge opportunity this presents for them to build their business. I get most of my leads from Facebook absolutely free. My method is simple and easy to duplicate and is directly opposite to what most network marketers do on Facebook. So what do most network marketers do on Facebook? Most network marketers join as many groups as they can and then proceed to spam their opportunity links into these groups. Some resort to auto posting software that automates the spamming process and inevitably the Facebook police tracks them down and these guys end up in “Facebook jail”. I know because I've been there. Yes, I've been to Facebook jail for spamming Facebook groups. My account was suspended for weeks. So if you are currently making yourself guilty, please stop this futile exercise as you are basically wasting your time while branding yourself as a loser and at the same time running a risk of getting an email from Facebook informing you that your account has been suspended.

The better way to do things is to quit the public groups and opt to “PM” or “Private Message” people you have identified as possible prospects. My method is to contact people that I think I’d like to work with and find out more about them. Remember, when you’re MLM prospecting, your core objective is just to be a friendly networker whom they like and trust. Just make a friend and don’t worry about the “recruiting” part.

The most common way to prospect on Facebook is either requesting friends or you getting a friend request from others. What happens 9 times out of 10? The person that requests you to become a friend will most likely send you a message about their Network Marketing business telling you it’s the best opportunity around and that you will make millions with very little investment. Now some of you that are reading this are exactly like those people sending friend requests to others and then blasting your links to them. Ask yourself, do I like it when this is done to me? Certainly not and the only thing this does is to brand yourself as an amateur. Your goal is to brand yourself as an expert.

There are 3 golden tips on how to prospect on Facebook. Tip#1 Your main objective is to Create Relationships. This is a very simple strategy but most skip this. A lot of people have an instant gratification mentality and believe that they have to get their business opportunity links out to their prospects within the first 30 seconds. This is wrong and is a characteristic of an MLM amateur. MLM Pro’s will not do this. Instead, they will go out to create a relationship first. They understand that people only buy from and do business with people whom they KNOW, LIKE and TRUST. Do your very best to create relationships first, find a connection whether it be with where they live, their occupation etc. and get to know them. This will put your prospect at ease and they will put their guard down and listen to you.

Tip#2 Ask The Right Questions So many people miss this step and beware... it can cost you dearly. You need to ask the right questions to lead the conversation. You need to ask questions such as: How long have you been in Network Marketing? Who introduced you into Network Marketing? Why did you get involved in Network Marketing? What marketing strategies are you using to build your business and what’s working? Are your current marketing strategies creating enough leads for you? What strategies do you use to convert your leads into business partners. Asking the right questions is a vital part of the process. It also helps to brand you as a leader in the mind of your prospect as leaders ask relevant intelligent questions. Those probing questions tells your prospects that you know much about this industry and helps to establish your authority in their mind. These questions will also tell you more about that person and will also help you to see see if you have anything you can help them with. Which leads me into my last tip.

Tip#3 Only offer a look at your opportunity as a possible solution to their problem. This obviously means that you first have to make a friend, ask the right questions then see how your opportunity can possibly be a solution to their problems. Never go into a conversation offering your opportunity before building the relationship - that’s why most people fail at prospecting. The rule is to post at least 5 to 6 general or small talk messages before you even start to steer the conversation in the direction of business or network marketing. Most network marketers are impatient and are determined to present their opportunity as the solution to the world's problems. They then proceed to ram and spam their opportunity and their affiliate links into their prospect's face. Listen my friend, you must create a relationship first, then ask the right questions to uncover their frustrations and problems. When you know their frustrations and problems, you can then start to think how your opportunity can be a possible solution to their problem.

You have to listen carefully and reverse engineer their problems so you can find a fit with offering them your opportunity. Depending on how your prospect answers the questions above, you can then proceed to offer your solution.

With that being said, here is an example of how a typical conversation might go... NOTE: Prospecting on Facebook is a numbers game so try to work up to a schedule of sending about 6 - 10 messages per day. Do not add them as a friend, until they ask you to or until you ask them if it is OK. Facebook suspects foul play if you send too many friend requests each day. To play safe, I ask THEM to add ME as you'll see on the next page ...

Me: Hi James … Rodney Johnson here. I saw your post promoting your business and I see you are also from Cape Town … wonder what else we have in common? Tell me a bit about your business and what it is you do?

James: I’m in the greatest opportunity of the century that’s set for explosive growth. Our products are the best and everybody in my team is already driving BMWs. All you need to do is to maintain posts and update the page regularly. It comes with all the necessary tools and self-service interface that is easy to use, even for beginners. This is cost-effective, and very easy to manage. Make sure not to use your public page for promoting your business. Your public page is for branding you as a regular real person with real life aspirations and successes.

Post lots of lifestyle pics for example, you and your family eating out or you and your family doing fun stuff or the stuff that others just dream about. People will start to wonder how you get it right to eat out five times a month or how you get to visit and experience all the things they only dream about. Be creative you don't have to spend much money, just have your cellphone ready to take a pic and upload. Your personal page should brand you as a fun person to be around. Your Fan Page is where you will post most of your business and network marketing related posts. Post lots of videos and training articles where your intention is to share valuable network marketing tips and tricks. Also post pics of you with other MLM leaders and company officials etc. This is called branding by association. A pic with a celebrity is the cherry on the cake. Take lots of pics when you attend MLM events. Your Facebook Fan page is your first step towards branding yourself as a sought after sponsor. As a Networker you must brand yourself. Always remember, your prospects need to “know, like and trust” you before the will do business with you.

Make sure your profile on both your personal page and your Fan Page is 100% complete and up to date. Remember to have two professional looking pics as profile pics on your Facebook personal page and your fan page. Put pics of yourself not pics of cartoon characters of other avatars. Avoid pics that make you look silly, unprofessional or amateur. Remember to smile and look happy on your profile pic.

Increasing your Edge Rank... Also remember to share and like posts of others...especially people you would like to have on your team. The more you Share, Like and Comment on other people's posts, the more they will see YOUR posts in their newsfeed. This technique is also known as increasing the edge rank (strength of the relationship) between you and someone else. The more two people interact (like, share and comment) on each other’s posts, the stronger Facebook assumes the relationship between the two to be. This results in your posts being featured prominently in the timeline of the other person.
