What can you do to make a difference to Manchester’s future? Manchester: A Certain Future is an ambitious plan to tackle climate change and create a safer, greener future. To achieve this, we need to   work together and take action; as tenants and home-owners, community groups and individuals, businesses and not-for-profit and   public agencies. We have to radically shift the way we think, the way we work and the way we live. We need to work together to create a safer future. We can, and we will. The plan aims to reduce our contribution to global warming, but recognises that the climate in Manchester, like everywhere else, is going to change over coming decades, whatever actions we take. This is because large amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse gases have already been released, both during the last century and the first few years of this one. By the middle of this century, it is already likely we will experience an increase in average temperature of up to 3.6°C, with wetter winters, drier summers, greater seasonal variation and more frequent extreme weather events.

The good news is that as we take up the climate challenge, our city will benefit significantly. In the years ahead, low carbon cities will have a clear market advantage over those that have not made the transition. We will benefit from new “green collar” jobs and clean enterprises. We will have adapted to a changed future and be healthier, greener and safer as a result. How can the plan help you? You’ll find resources, downloads, events and news on the website www.manchesterclimate.com . You’ll also find over 150 actions you can take some are intended for businesses, but many are small changes we can all make in our everyday lives. If you want to develop an action plan for your business or organisation, you can select actions and build a plan on the website.

Manchester’s goals, set out in the plan, are to: 

Reduce the city of Manchester’s direct emissions of CO2 by 41% by 2020, based on 2005 levels. (This means a reduction from current levels of 3.2 million tonnes of CO2 per annum to less than 2.0 million. That means a reduction from 7.3 tonnes per head each year, to 4.3 tonnes). Engage all individuals, neighbourhoods and organisations in Manchester in a process of cultural change that embeds ‘lowcarbon thinking’ into the lifestyles and operations of the city.
