SCHOOL OF MEDIA AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY Damelin Digital Photography Certificate DESCRIPTION This programme is designed to introduce learners to the digital photography industry. Successful learners are able to demonstrate specialised skills and techniques such as producing professional photographs from the initial conceptual stages to the final product. Knowledge of the history, theory, ethics and practices of photography, as well as presentation, are included in this programme. Learners will be able to digitally manipulate photographs after completion of this programme.

PROGRAMME OUTLINE Photographic Technology  Learners will be able to evaluate the performance of a range of digital materials, techniques and technologies Digital Imaging  Demonstrate the ability to utilize the different tools of photographic editing software package  Manipulate photographs digitally according to a brief Lighting Principles  Apply and demonstrate knowledge of light, lighting principals, equipment and techniques  Apply different camera, studio and location lighting techniques Entrepreneurship  Creativity and entrepreneurship  South African business environment History of Photography  Demonstrate knowledge of the history of photography from early days to present

Professional Practice  Relate practical studies in photography to a professional context.  Photographers’ understanding of professional ethics and responsibilities. Application of photography  Create photographs in different genres, demonstrating knowledge of techniques  Interpret visually communicated messages Fundamentals  English 1st language  South African 2nd language (or alternative prescribed electives from the same programme for foreign language learners less than 5 years in South Africa)  Mathematical literacy Workplace Learning This programme includes a compulsory Workplace Learning component. Workplace Learning provides important opportunities for professional and personal growth. It addresses specific competencies identified for the acquisition of this programme which relates to the development of skills that will make the learner employable and will assist in developing his/her personal skills

DURATION One year full-time study according to programme requirements.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Candidates accessing this programme should demonstrate their ability to read, analyse and reflect on study material at least on Grade 11 level. Candidates should be able to demonstrate:  

Knowledge, comprehension and application of language at Grade 11 or equivalent. Basic knowledge, comprehension and application of Mathematics at Grade 10 or equivalent.

FUNDAMENTALS CREDIT ACCUMULATION TRANSFER (CAT) Should a learner have passed Grade 12 with a 1st and 2nd South African Language and Maths, he or she may apply for exemption based on the table below.

A final summative assessment will be conducted to determine whether the exit level outcomes have been achieved.
