Homecoming to honor ’74 Alexis state finalists

This year’s homecoming football halftime wll honor the 1974 Alexis football team on the 35th anniversary of their championship appearance. Members of that year’s runners-up will be introduced during halftime with a reception to follow the game at Cloud Nine in Monmouth where the championship game film will be shown. Homecoming will be held on Friday, October 16, with the Red Storm hosting Peoria Heights at 7:00 p.m.. More information will be available at the beginning of the upcoming school year. Members of the 1974 team may contact United Athletic Director Tony Kozelichki at 734-9411 to confirm plans to attend that night’s festivities. This past year’s homecoming honored the Yorkwood state championship football team on the 25th anniversary of their championship season. The 2010 homecoming will be highlighted by the induction of the first members of the United Athletic Hall of Fame.

By Julie Gunter After breaking their own record for the longest 1A state final game with a 19-inning endurance test, the United Red Storm Softball team brought home silver metdals and a big trophy for the second year in a row after a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to the Cobden Appleknockers. This hair-raising game started off with a hitch, as it was delayed for rain before the Storm even had time to take the field for warm-ups. It was critical that the final be played no later than June 6, as five of the members--four of which were starters--would leave for Mexico at one o’clock the next morning. However, the rain went away, and the pitching match began. The Storm led everywhere but

on the scoreboard throughout the entire game, with one error, 12 hits, and stand-up pitching by veteran Katie Bertelsen. Fans were on the edges of their seats at one point, when bases were loaded for the Appleknockers and a bloop to center field could have lost the game for the Storm, but Megan Patterson sped for a scooping catch, and they lived to die another inning. Finally, with a runner on third, Cobden’s catcher hit a screamer to left-center, and nothing could be done to keep the game alive. Players were welcomed home with a ceremony by dedicated fans, and while tears were shed, the smiles shone brighter. “I couldn’t ask for a better bunch of teammates,” said Kaitlyn Winkler as she spoke to

the crowd. Extra innings were played in the last three games of the season, as the Storm won a 9-inning Supersectional against Dakota and an 11-inning semi-final against Tri-Valley. Added to the team’s successful

season was a Conference Championship and a tournment win at Rockridge. While losing the outstanding senior leadership of Bre Christian, the team will remain intact for next year’s season..

Goodbye to United’s exchange student By Bast Chaikhunsombat With May gone and June just a few days from its end, I sit here to write my final story of the year. It’s a sad ending as the school year flew by too fast. My experience here was bigger and better than I ever thought, and it’s something I will always remember. For the most part, this past month was pretty calm. I did go to Iowa City with other exchange students, the last trip we would take together. My friends and I spent two days and a night together. We went to the outlet store where everything appeared to be on sale. Watching the softball team was especially exciting this spring. It seemed as if they could never be beaten and they were truly the pride of our school. I talked with a friend in my home country who has been the school president this year. We talked about the “Music in

the Garden” that’s held every year, similar to United’s spring concert. In fact, we talked about musical planning for two hours Finally, thank you Anton Kozelichki, who helped me with grammar, along with Katy Schrader; Bethany and Victoria Fredrickson who said “Hello” and “Hola” to me; Jillian Rundle, Julie Gunter, Katie Allaman, Elizabeth Johnson and Stasha Giese for their work on this paper; and Mr.Tony Kozelichki and all my friends at United High School, Thank you all so much.

Gas contract to save District #304 thousands By Stasha Giese On Thursday, May 14, the school board met for the last time of the 2008-09 school year. Topics mainly concerned the upcoming school year. It was decided that United will use the services of Halcomb Oil to fuel the buses for 2009-10. Halcomb will charges $1.86 for a gallon of gas and $1.66 for diesel, both with a flex of $.05 over market price. The new contract will save District #304 $12,000.00 alone on the Monmouth-Roseville busing costs, for which a new contract has ben approved. The district will also save $42,000.00 on the south campus routes. The board has not yet estimated how much more will be saved on the other routes, but all will prove to be financially suitable. It was also decided to stay with Jerry’s Dairy for the milk contract and with Interstate Baking for bread, buns and other baked goods.

The right to waive the following holidays was also passed: Veteran’s Day, Lincoln’s Birthday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Columbus Day and Casmir Pulaski Day. This decision does not mean that school will not be held on those holidays. Instead, the state-mandated procedure gives the district flexibility in setting its yearly calendar with options to hold or cancel classes on those holidays depending upon when each falls in the yearly cycle. By a 6-1 vote, with Marshall Schrader casting the lone dissenting ballot, it was decided that the school board should have a right to waive tuition of a full time district employee’s child, if that employee lives out of the district. The current annual out of district fee falls at $7,200.00. A new state board of education policy allows districts to apply for such a waiver. United board members agreed

The turbine will be set up at the junior high, with several hundred dollars per year electrical cost savings anticipated. Following closed session the board voted to rehire Mrs. Linda Kozelichki as Family and Consumer Science teacher and Ms. Natalie Kopriva as junior high science and high school physical science teacher. The board also regrettfully accepted Fayla Bodenhamer’s resignation as Scholastic Bowl coach at the high school. ---------------------------------------At the June 11 board meeting members approved an amended 08-09 budget with expenses of $12.4 million and expenditures of $11 million.

Fund balances are expected to be around $2 million when the fiscal year end on June 30. The board was informed the United Foundation will award nearly $11,000 to purchase laptops and science equipment for fifth grade studnets, a global positioning system for the junior high, and a Smartboard. Changes to the high school and junior high handbooks were approved. Superintendent Jeff Whitsitt presented elementary principals Dan Renwick and Tom Gilliland with “U-Made a Difference” awards. Renwick is retiring after 18 years as an administrator in the Alexis and United districts, while Gillilan leaves after 35 years in the Warren and United districts where he served as an English teacher and elementary principal. The next Board of Education meeting will be held July 9.

Economic stimulus funds to go to special ed By Elizabeth Johnson Local school districts are a part of President Obama’s economic stimulus package enacted earlier this spring. The United School District, because it is part of the Knox-Warren Special Education Cooperative, will receive a flat rate that can be used on special education improveents. The money, $60,000, was originally supposed to be used this year, but because the 2009 fiscal year is coming to an end on June 30, Superintendent Jeff Whitsett has decided to use it next year in order for the district to have time to assess what

specific areas would best benefit from the grant.. One idea under discussion would be to use the money for a one time project that multiple districts could benefit from. Mr. Whitsett is working with the Regional Office of Education and other local districts to see if pooling several area districts’ grants would be possible. Although there are no set plans at the moment, Whitsitt told board membes at the April meeting the money will be very helpful in the near future in an area (special education) that sees increased expenditures on an annual basis..

Class of ’09 celebrated at awards night, graduation By Katy Schrader Graduation 2009 took place at the Monmouth College’s Huff Center on May 24 at 2:00 p.m. as 66 graduates walked in pairs down the red carpet led by Junior Marshals Duncan Nall and Julie Gunter. They strolled to the traditional tune of Pomp and Circumstance, written by Edward Elgar and performed by the United Band. Class member Jessy Battenburg opened with a prayer and was followed by Bre Christian’s salutatory address and Patrick Olin’s valedictory address. Both spoke of past experiences, hard work, future dreams, and the importance of friendships. Following these speeches, the Senior Choir beautifully performed the song I Will Remember by Sarah McLachlan. Next, the United Choir performed For Good written by Stephan Schwartz. Both songs were performed under the direction of Mrs. Judy Gilliland. School Board president Mr. Richard Elliott then handed out diplomas to the successful graduates with a handshake for each. The ceremony was closed by class member Katie Allaman who spoke and ended with a prayer. Graduation came to an end with the graduates returning in pairs down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstance. The United High School Class of 2009 chose a quote by Sir Winston Churchill as their class motto: “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.”

By Katie Allaman United High School recognized its outstanding students at United Pride Night on Wednesday, May 6, at 7:00 p.m. High school Principal Mrs. Amy Schmitz opened the evening by welcoming the students, their families, friends, and community. Then the awards portion of the night began, starting with scholarships and then awards. The first awards presented were the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Sgt. Spring music program features a twist

By Elizabeth Johnson United High School’s annual Spring Concert was held on Monday, May 11 and featured many entertaining acts from students as well as teachers. The opening number for the High School Choir was a Grease medley that included Summer Nights, with soloists Stasha Giese and Charlie Vestlal, You’re the One that I Want, Rock-n-Roll Party Queen, and more. They also sang My Boyfriend’s Back, with soloist Megan Hardesty insulting a real go getter, Charlie Vestal. Hardesty’s “boyfriend,” Joe Wood, came and scared Vestal off, while Hardesty

and Wood shared an embrace. The Swing Chior also performed that night and sounded wonderful singing Moon River. Along with a vocal performance, the Swing Choir also danced to Puttin’ on the Ritz. They worked very hard to get each step just right and it payed off. The entire Choir had an excellent time performing and dancing to these numbers. As for Jazz Band and the regular band, everyone involved played their hearts out and it showed with their renditions of Satin Doll and Caravan by Duke Ellington and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.

This year’s concert also feaqtured individual talents with Joe Wood playing a Led Zeppelin guitar solo. The Drum Line also performed with one small mistake but they laughed it off and finished spectacularly, as usual. Another “guest” act featured Spanish teacher Rick Johnson singing The Cheeseburger Song (and forgeting most of the lines) by Jimmy Buffet, while elementary principal Tom Gilliland and superintendent Jeff Whitsitt teaming to perform Roy Orbison’s Pretty Woman and Peaceful Easy Feeling by the Eagles. A high school faculty group

also “performed,” utlilizing a variety of percussion instruments. Although this was different from what most expected, United High School’s Spring Concert proved to be one of the best yet and Mrs. Gilliland did an excellant job bringing it all together.

United students, groups keep busy until the very end Volunteer Club By Anton Kozelichki On Friday, May 8, members of United Volunteer Club went to Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg to help junior high students around the area in a program called “Welcome to the Real World.” “Welcome to the Real World” is a program put on every year by the University of Illinois Extension. It helps the students realize what it will be like when they get into and out of college and have to fend for themselves. The students were eighth graders from Knoxville, Churchill, United, and Monmouth-Roseville Junior Highs, just to name a few. Overall, there were 677 students from surrounding area schools in attendance. The students had many opportunities. The students had to get a checking account, along with a debit card. If a student’s debit card was stolen, that person would see what happens to people in real life, like how much is paid for getting a new debit card. The kids found out how to write checks and how to use them properly. They would then go around to make purchases for housing, transportation, insurance, utilities, groceries, clothing, and entertainment. The students would find out that additional money would be added on for purchases. Transportation would have an additional $150 for gas, oil, etc. Utilities must add an additional $40 for cell phones and another

$40 for premium cable channels. Because of these additions, students found out how to use there money wisely and not waste it so they didn’t have to go back to the bank.

ICTM By Julie Gunter Once again, the United ICTM team placed in the top ten at state. On May 2, at the University of Illinois in ChampaignUrbana, the mathletes brought home a seventh-place over all finish. The Junior/ Senior 8-person team made up of Jessy Battenburg, Katie Allaman, Bre Christian, Peter Elliott, Mollie Murdock, Duncan Nall, Julie Gunter and Carissa Youngquist, scored 45 points for a fourthplace finish. Patrick Olin and Peter Elliott placed fifth in the Junior/Senior 2-person teams. The Pre-Calculus team of Christian, Elliott, Olin, Battenburg, Brandon Lee, and Chris Olson placed sixth. Lee and Olson also brought home seventh in Calculator competiton along with Zach Steele, Nick Cavanaugh and Brad Cook. Another seventh-place award went to the Geometry team of Cavanaugh, Alex Gavin, Gina Long, Taylor Toops and Joe Wood. The Algebra I and II teams both took ninth place. Algebra I team consisted of Cook, Daniel Adee, Logan Douglas, Jake Gavin, Cecilia Prentice and Christian Schrader while Algebra II team had Murdock, Nall, Steele and Youngquist.

The Fresh/Soph Relay team of Wood, Prentice, Douglas and Jake Gavin won tenth-place medals. While this was the first year for the team to compete without Mr. MacIntosh as official coach, his presence was felt throughout the season and the team benefitted from his and Mrs. Schmitz’s help.

FCA By Stasha Giese The end of the year has been a time of inspiration and bonding for United’s FCA members. On the Wednesday before students were dismissed for Easter break, Rick Johnson took students to Colona to see a presentation of the stations of the cross put on by members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Stations of the cross is a series of 14 prayers recited with the aid of 14 pictures to portray Jesus’ journey from Pilate’s home to Calvary. On Saturday, April 23, Julie and Marshall Schrader put on a FCA party in honor of this year’s seniors. For dinner Marshall grilled hotdogs for everyone to eat. Following the meal Mr. Johnson presented posters with Bible verses he had bought for all of the seniors. He then had each pick out two and students wrote goodbye messages on them. The rest of the night was full of ping-pong, roasting marshmallows, and other various activities. The evening was mixed with new memories and reminiscing about old ones, and was defi-

nitely a success. Just because it is the end of the 2008-09 school year does not mean that plans are not being made for the next. Mr. Johnson is in the middle of making plans for a retreat to help kick off the next school year. It is planned to be held at Camp Summit in North Henderson. As of right now the date is not concrete. He would like to have it some time in September.

FFA By Bethany Fredrickson The United FFA hosted a blood drive and CPR training day May 15. This was a very successful day with participating students becoming certified to do CPR, and eventually saving lives with the blood that they donated. On May 16 some FFA students headed to Burlington, IA with advisor Brian Cirks for a paintball trip. Up next on the FFA calendar was the annual lunch cookout outside the ag shop. Third and fourth graders from both West and North campuses visited the high school ag shop for a petting zoo on May 29. The state FFA convention was held in Springfield on June 9-11. Among these students, Ellen Reeder ran for State FFA President. During the convention Jake Armstrong and Grace Simpson were honored and received their state FFA degrees. Armstrong and Simpson will be traveling to Washington, D.C.. They are going to the Washington Leadership Conference on June 23-28. On this trip Arm-

strong and Simpson will be touring the city, learning citizenship and service duties.

Co-op class seeks business partners The United High School cooperative education program places seniors in part-time job settings to help them build job and career skills. Students have worked in a variety of job settings including local farms, a dental office, supermarkets, etc. Participants attend classes in the morning, including a career skills/co-op class taught by the program coordinator, Mr. Joel Zink. They are then released for the afternoon to work at their various jobs for a minimum of 15 hours per week. Their job performance is monitored by the coordinator quarterly during the school year. Placements for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year are now being made. If your business would like to participate in this program, please contact Mr. Zink at 7349411. Especially needed is a computer entry/office position for a student with a high-level of computer aptitude and a farming position for a student with extensive farming experience.

Late season difficulties doom baseball, track teams’ post-season plans By Victoria Fredrickson A once promising season came to a sudden halt as the Red Storm baseball team finished the season under .500 with a record of 1415. During the final week of the season, the Red Storm lost six games in a row including a 1-0 heart breaker to Abingdon in the first round of regionals. The Red Storm would also drop out of contention for the Lincoln Trail Conference title. “The season was full of should of, could of, would of,” said Coach Rick Johnson. After sweeping a double header against Galva, in which Chris Olson, who is known for his speed rather than his power, hit a long home run to left field, the Red Storm would then again go on to win for the second time to Alwood/Cambridge. The following week, the Red Storm split a double header against West Central. Most of the starters were gone for that game due to ICTM. Later the Red Storm would split another double header against Princeville and then would beat rival Aledo for the second time this year. On May 9, the Red Storm played Annawan/Wethersfield, needing to sweep the Titans for a conference championship. They would come up short getting beat 8-4 in the first game, and smoked 10-0 in the second game. May 18 saw United face cross town rival Monmouth/Roseville with the game being played at a neutral site (Monmouth College). The Red Storm would get shut down by Cory Jensen, who struck out his first nine batters.

Shane Creighton would then come in and strike out another four batters. On May 21, the Red Storm faced the Abingdon Commandos in the first round of regionals. They would get beat 1-0 in a tough game. “It was a tough season for the team, especially the six we are losing. They are classy, great leaders and quality ball players,” said Johnson. Team leaders for the Red Storm were CJ Ravel who had a batting average of .392 and also led the team in runs batted in with 34; Patrick Olin led the team with home runs with 4; Alex Gavin led the team with an earned run average of 2.55; Nick Hull and Patrick Olin had a good strike out to walk ratio of 3-1 with Hull striking out 75, while walking 25 and Olin striking out 36, while walking 18. Ravel, Olson and Sheldon Welch were named first team all conference, with Hull being named honorable mention. By Anton Kozelichki A once bright beginning for both the boys and girls’ track teams ended with injuries and bad hand-offs, but broken records highlight the 2009 United track season. Scott Duncan, who had a high jump of 6’ 5” earlier in the season, injured his hamstring at the sectional meet in Sherrard after a jump of 5’ 7”. He could not

A late season injury likely cost junior high jumper Scott Duncan a spot in the state finals continue and was unable to make it to state. At the girls sectional in Monmouth, several relay teams were hoping to advance, but were unable to. The 4x100 team of Victoria Fredrickson, Carissa Youngquist, Mollie Murdock and Blake Callihan had very high hopes of making it to state after having a time one second below qualification earlier in the year. The 4x200 team of Fredrickson, Youngquist, Jessica Price, and Callihan were also unable to advanced coming up short by one

high school, but she contributed greatly in the 4x100 and 4x200 teams. “I wish Vic could’ve been on the team all four years,” Bohan said. “She helped these girls a lot and made them a better team.” While the girls were shattering records, the boys’ team was breaking some of their own. Scott Duncan broke the record in high jumping, jumping 6’5”. The 4x100 relay team of Ricky Moore, Brandon Trego, Aaron McDonald and Scott Duncan broke the record with a time of 47.8 seconds. The 4x200 team of Moore, Jeremy Livingston, McDonald and Duncan broke the record with a time of 1:40.8. Christian Schrader was the freshman/sophomore conference champion in the 400 meter dash and recorded the second best time at United. Ricky Moore recorded the second best long jump at United, lumping 17’7”. Duncan Nall recorded the second best discuss throw, throwing 114’8”. “This year was an improvement over last year’s track season,” said Coach Dennis Mann. “This was due mostly to having a larger team. We were able to fill all of the relays and all but the hurdle running events.”

However, there were many positives to look at for this years teams. The girls’ track team broke seven school records. Carissa Youngquist broke the record for the open 100 meter dash with a time of 13.1 seconds. Blake Callihan broke the record for the open 200 meter dash with a time of 27.99 seconds. Krysten Karns broke the record for the mile with a time of 6 minutes and 10.05 seconds. Mollie Murdock broke the record for the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 51.91 seconds. The 4x100 team broke the record with a time of 53.7 seconds. The 4x200 team broke the record with a time of 1:52.47. The 4x800 team broke the record with a time of 10:41.85. “This has been the best track team United has had, no doubt,” girls’ coach Barb Bohan said. “You just can’t break that many records without talent and we have a lot of talent.” One person who made a major impact was senior Victoria Fredrickson. This was her first year participating in track during

Future still bright despite pair of championship losses Record setting pitching by sophomore Katie Bertelsen wasn’t enough as a lack of timely hitting and a number of costly baserunning mistakes left the United Red Storm just short in their quest for a state softball championship. The girls dropped a 1-0, 19-inning affair to the Cobden Appleknockers, who defeated the Red Storm a year ago in 11-innings in the championship game. Bertelsen set several state records over the course of two games, hurling 28-innings between the semi-final game on Friday and the state title game on Saturday, shattering her own Class 1-A record of a year ago of 17 strikeouts in a tourney game with 28 in this year’s semi-final.

With only one senior graduating, United will return its entire starting lineup in 2010, while two-time defending state champion Cobden loses a pair of senior starters at shortstop and first base, but returns both pitchers who shut down United bats in each of the two championship games. Overall, the 1-A finals were like deja vu with United once again defeating Downs Tri-Valley in the semi-final game as the Storm did in 2008. In fact, only one of the four finalists from 2008 did not return in 2009. Named to the Lincoln Trail Conference’s all-conference first team were Bertelsen, Long, Sommer Foster and Rachel Kenney, with Kaitlyn Winkler, Katie Kaywood and Augusta Chandler all receiving honorable mention. Bertelsen was the conference’s leading vote getter, garnering all of the first place votes from the conference coaches. All area and all state teams had not been named at press time.
