CLERK OF THE CIRCUIT COURT

TEEN COURT

PURPOSE:

Of Clay County, Fl, Inc.

ATTORNEYS, BAILIFFS, CLERKS, JURORS Teen Court is a court for teenagers only. Every position in the courtroom is held by a teenager with the exception of the judge. The judge is an adult member of the Florida Bar Association. Youth, ages 12 to 17, act as the defense attorney, prosecuting attorney, bailiff, clerk, and jurors. A trial routine is followed. The prosecuting and defense attorneys make opening statements, the defendant takes the witness stand and is questioned, then both attorneys sum it all up in their closing arguments. The case is then handed over to the teen jury who will decide a fair and just punishment for the crime committed by the defendant.

Teen Court gives first-time offenders between the ages of 10 and 17 a second chance while holding them accountable for their actions. Youthful law violators must stand before a jury of their peers, plead guilty and accept all sanctions imposed upon them by the teen jury. When the teen defendants completes their sentence successfully the charges against them are dropped by the State Attorney’s Office.

GOAL: This award-winning program is based on the philosophy that youthful law violators are less likely to continue to be offenders when a jury of their peers decides their punishment. It provides a safe forum for young people to speak out against the criminal behavior exhibited by their peers. It engages youth in activities that decrease their risk of victimization and gives them an important and active roll in the community. Teens become the solution not the “problem.”

Teen Court jury duties, peer circles, and Saturday community service hours are held in the beautiful 1890 Historic Courthouse at 915 Walnut Street, Green Cove Springs, FL. This is the only Teen Court in the U.S. to hold court in its own courthouse. For more information please contact
