This Guide features candidates for mayor and city council of Greensboro. It is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Piedmont Triad, Greensboro News & Record, Greensboro Voters’ Alliance, and Democracy North Carolina. This non-par san Guide provides vital ps about vo ng and answers to ques ons sent to candidates.

WHO IS ON MY BALLOT? WHERE & WHEN DO I VOTE?

Two Elections in 2017 There are a lot of candidates for the mayor and 8 other members of the city council. The winners are decided through two elec ons: Vote in the Oct. 10 primary to decide who appears on the Nov. 7 ballot. In each elec on, you may vote for 1 candidate for mayor, 1 candidate for the council member represen ng your district, and 3 “at-large” candidates represen ng the whole city. The 2 candidates for mayor and for each district who get the most votes in the primary, and the 6 candidates for at-large seats with the most votes, will be on the Nov. 7 ballot. The winners are the mayoral candidate, each district candidate, and the 3 at-large candidates with the most votes in the Nov. 7 elec on.

Do I Need an ID to Vote? Because of a court ruling, you do not need to show an ID to vote except in 2 situa ons: (1) If you use Same-Day Registra on, you’ll need to show a document listed in the box on page 13. (2) If you are a new voter in the county and some informa on was missing on your registra on form, you may need to show a document listed in the box on page 13 or any current photo ID.

Same-Day Registration If you miss the deadline to register, you may use “same-day registra on” during Early Vo ng at an Early Vo ng loca on. Ask the elec on official for a registra on form, show an iden fying document, and vote a ballot – all on the same day. You cannot use same-day registra on on Elec on Day. The iden fying document you show must be one of these with your name and current address: • a NC driver’s license; • other government photo ID; • student photo ID along with a school document showing the student’s address (e.g., a campus housing list, invoice, or le er); • a u lity bill (cell phone, electric, cable, etc.); • bank statement or payroll stub; or • a document from any government agency (a bill, permit, le er, etc.) 13

How to Vote By Mail (Absentee Ballot) Any registered voter may vote by mail; no excuse or special reason is needed. Use the official request form at demnc.co/absform or ncsbe.gov. (Call tollfree 866-522-4723 or visit demnc.co/mail for help.)

including having two witnesses (or one notary) sign in the appropriate place on the envelope. Include their addresses on the envelope. To be counted, the voter (or near rela ve) must return the ballot in one of 3 ways: (1) to the Board of Elec ons office by 5 pm on Elec on Day; (2) to an Early Vo ng loca on during Early Vo ng; or (3) by mail so it is postmarked by 5 pm Elec on Day and received at the County Board by 3 business days a er Elec on Day. Take it inside the post office and request a hand-cancelled postmark if it is near the deadline. Mailing takes two first-class stamps.

The request form must be signed by the voter or voter’s “near rela ve” (see defini on of near rela ve on back of form). It must be received (not just sent) at the County Board of Elec ons by 5 pm one week before Elec on Day (the Tuesday before Elec on Day). A ballot and return envelope will then be mailed to the voter. Follow all the direc ons carefully, 15
