Minister’s Message

WA Seniors Awards 2015 are presented by the Council on the Ageing (WA) in partnership with the Department of Local Government and Communities

presented in partnership by:

The State Government is proud to support the WA Seniors Awards, which celebrate outstanding older Western Australians and remarkable individuals and organisations who work with and for them. The relevance of these awards continues to grow. Each year, the population of seniors in Western Australia increases. Almost one in five people are now aged over 60, a figure expected to move towards one in four over the next few decades. The WA Seniors Awards program, celebrating 30 years, is a partnership between COTA WA and the Department of Local Government and Communities. It is an opportunity to recognise those people, many of them quiet achievers, who contribute so much to the lives of older West Australians. The Liberal-National Government is dedicated to fostering a community in which seniors can enjoy a healthy and active life, remain independent and stay socially connected.

sponsored by:

Today’s seniors are more involved in the wider community than ever before, providing knowledge, skills and support as mentors, teachers, volunteers, workers, carers and family members. Older people contribute enormously to the economic and social well-being of our communities. I encourage you to nominate individuals and organisations for the WA Seniors Awards so their contributions can be recognised and rewarded.

Juniper’s Message Juniper is proud to sponsor this year’s premier award for seniors and congratulates the awards’ convenors in achieving 30 years of celebrating older Western Australians. As a leading provider of aged care and community support services, Juniper has a long history of serving our seniors, having opened our doors to our first residents in 1949. Since then we have grown to more than 1,600 staff and 500 volunteers who support more than 4,000 people in our retirement villages, home care programs and residential aged care services throughout the State ranging from Wyndham in the Kimberley to Albany in the Great Southern. As our population ages and demand for care and support services increases we are doubling our response with some of the most forward-thinking services available. Our workforce contributes greatly to the wellbeing of seniors and the communities in which we operate. Our volunteers make an enormous difference to the work we do and without them our response would be significantly diminished. We congratulate the WA Seniors Awards for 30 years in recognising and celebrating seniors and we look forward to commending finalists and winners when the Awards are announced on 1 October - International Day of Older Persons. Older people will continue to share their experiences, commit to giving back to the community and work hard to make a difference in people’s lives. The Juniper 2015 Seniors Champion Award recognises an outstanding senior for their commitment to Western Australian communities. Juniper acknowledges this spirit and encourages individuals, groups and organisations to participate in this year’s WA Seniors Awards and join us to celebrate the many wonderful achievements of our seniors.

Message from Maureen Angus Maureen Angus

Juniper WA Seniors Champion 2014 WA Seniors Awards The WA Seniors Awards are a wonderful platform from which to recognise the great work done by regular people in the community and I encourage all West Australians to get behind the awards and nominate a senior who contributes to making our State a better place to live. As winner of the Seniors Advocate Award and overall champion at the 2014 WA Seniors Awards, I was humbled and proud that the collective support and spirit shown in my small Aboriginal community of Ardyaloon (One Arm Point), and nearby Beagle Bay and Djarindjin, were recognised and highlighted. Seniors contribute so much to our communities,

whether in the remotest Aboriginal community or the inner city of Perth. When I established my Kimberley community’s first care service, it was to help the elders with day-to-day tasks such as shopping, transport and paying bills. Awards were not a consideration but being nominated for, let alone winning, a WA Seniors Award was a great honour and provided a wonderful confirmation to our community that we are on the right path. I also encourage everyone to take part in the many fun activities and events that will be held to celebrate WA’s fantastic seniors as part of Seniors Week, 8-15 November 2015.

Community Senior Volunteer Award Recognises outstanding voluntary or unpaid work by a senior serving the community. This includes contribution by a senior involved in: • Voluntary or unpaid work • Leadership • Working with service organisations • Serving on committees • Art • Education • Music • Sport Self-nominations are welcome.

e WA Seniors Awards 2015 Celebrating 30 YEARS

Val Firmin

2014 Bendigo Bank Community Senior Award winner An instructor of low-impact fitness classes for more than 20 years, Jurien Bay resident Val Firmin has been instrumental in encouraging seniors to stay healthy, active and socially engaged. Her aerobics classes brought fun and fitness to a large number of seniors in the community and she showed incredible dedication to her role. When Val recently retired from her fitness role, she made sure there would be a replacement for her classes and the Jurien Bay seniors now take part in a walking group. Val is a much-loved member of the community and she has gained the respect of not only the seniors, but also the many local sporting and recreation groups. 2014 Finalists Marie Kormendy Irene Thomas

Category TWO

Dr Janet Fletcher

2014 Intergenerational Senior Award Dr Janet (Jan) Fletcher is a volunteer coaching convener with Orienteering WA and has had a tremendous impact on the organisation, showing the skill and wisdom seniors can contribute to a sporting community. She has drawn on her professional qualifications in psychology and coaching to develop an intergenerational coaching approach pairing senior coaches with junior competitors. The idea helped older orienteers develop their

coaching skills and addressed the challenge of encouraging more juniors to get involved in the sport. Members of the coaching group, who are primarily seniors, have risen to the intergenerational challenge thanks to Jan’s inspiring leadership, support and strategic thinking. 2014 Finalists Nicolette Pratt Alan Salisbury

Seniors Advocate Award

City of Cockburn 2014 Age Friendly Communities Local Government Award

Maureen Angus 2014 Seniors Advocate Award

The City of Cockburn has a long standing commitment to involving seniors in planning an age-friendly community. Over the past 10 years, the city has developed an age-friendly strategic plan and consulted Cockburn seniors for its Seniors Strategic Planning Framework. It has also founded a regional seniors group made up of representatives of local seniors groups and clubs and in 2009 opened a seniors’ centre. The city has supported seniors to remain living in their community for longer with suburban revitalisation projects that facilitate smaller and more affordable dwellings. Community projects also encourage seniors to volunteer and stay active.

Jawi Bardi woman Maureen lives in Ardyaloon (One Arm Point), a remote indigenous town in WA’s north-west with a population of barely more than 300. As a senior who was taken care of by her family and who had regular visits from the Kimberley Aged and Community Services, Maureen thought she was lucky. But she knew other seniors in her community weren’t so fortunate. So she investigated how she could set up a support service in the town. Today, the Ardyaloon Community Care Service supports local seniors by helping them with organised care and supporting them with transport, shopping, cleaning and paying bills. The service has helped seniors stay at home rather than moving to residential care in Broome. Maureen’s commitment and passion has helped to boost social participation and reduced isolation among seniors in her community.
