Walking for Health Walkers are Welcome

“The Yorkshire Wolds; a softer crescent of hills, secret deep valleys and astonishingly pretty villages each with a gem of a church, an inviting pub and a duck pond mantled by willow trees.” Fergus Collins Editor of BBC Countryfile Magazine

‘Walkers are Welcome’ is a national initiative which started in 2007 and now has over 100 member towns who all promote walking activity and a warm welcome to walkers. There are 3 towns in the Yorkshire Wolds namely Market Weighton, Beverley and Pocklington that are already active and established ‘Walkers are Welcome’ Towns. Thanks to all of them for arranging walks and events as part of this festival. is a programme of events within the festival which celebrates and encourages town walking in the beautiful historic town of Beverley. Nearby Snaith has recently achieved WAW status and as a launch event is holding its own Walking Festival 14 to 20 September. Further details can be found at visithullandeast yorkshire.com

Walking for Heath is a national initiative aimed at encouraging the community to become more physically active through walking. East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Walking for Health Scheme currently has 19 different walk venues, with over 50 guided walks every month. Walks can range from 30 minutes for those who are just getting back into walking or two hours for those who want a bit more of a challenge. Although this event is taking place a week after the festival, Ed and Nicola Duggleby of Brickyard Farm, Beswick are kindly hosting this pleasure horse ride, which explores the little-known farmland between Beverley and Driffield. The ‘carrs’ are lands which used to flood and were used as seasonal pastures: now they’ve been drained, and the area is criss-crossed with dykes and other waterways. Mid-way round the circuit is the wildlife haven of wetlands, ponds and marshes at Tophill Low Nature Reserve, bordered by a long bridleway. Much of the route is over private land which is not normally accessible, including a couple of optional jumps, and there will be two route options of around 8 and 11 miles. The entry fee includes a BBQ lunch from the Duggleby’s homereared Belted Galloway beef and rare-breed lamb. Meet: Brickyard Farm, Beswick, YO25 9AX OS Grid ref: TA025481 Time: Between 9 and 12 (start times will be staggered) Cost: £21 Booking strictly through Ride Yorkshire.
