MAYOR KICKS OFF WATFORD RIVERWELL CLEAN UP Local school children joined the elected Mayor of Watford, Baroness Dorothy Thornhill, Watford Riverwell partners and local environment campaigners over the summer in a community clean-up of the stretch of the River Colne, which runs directly through the regeneration site.

FIRST JOBS AT WATFORD’S TRADE CITY The Trade City development, which is the new business park at Watford Riverwell, has secured its first tenant - Screwfix. They have taken Unit 7, which totals 6,400 sq ft and is expected to open in September 2017. The new industrial hub at Trade City, which is located along Thomas Sawyer Way, provides 12 units in total and will be completed shortly. It is anticipated to create around 180 jobs. The scheme offers on-site parking, landscaping, fully fitted office accommodation and the option to combine units.

The river and the surrounding area has been subjected to years of intensive industrial use and rubbish tipping. The clean-up forms a major part of the plans to restore the river’s habitats and to create new green open spaces for the community to enjoy. The clean-up included: ‑ A fun and informative session for children from Laurance Haines School. ‑ A litter pick on the banks of the river.

‑ A demonstration by local charity, Watford on the Water, on how his team will go about clearing debris and rubbish that has built up in the river.

More information and a film about the clean-up event are available at Riverwell-regeneration.com

HOSPITAL UPDATE West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust has submitted proposals to radically redevelop Watford General Hospital and expects to hear if these have been approved in late 2017. These plans are the responsibility of the Trust but the Watford Riverwell masterplan takes the hospital into account and will continue to support and facilitate its progress.

CARING FOR THE ELDERLY Watford Riverwell has teamed up with Mayfield Villages, a specialist care community developer and operator, to deliver a 250-unit care community. Around 40 per cent of people in Watford will be over 65 by 2030 and so demand for care/retirement accommodation is high and increasing rapidly. Part of the Audley Group, Mayfield will provide high quality care accommodation with a mix of on-site facilities, including a dining room, lounges and a health and wellbeing club. There will be 24 hour on-site care, and gardens will be provided for the residents.

ABOUT WATFORD RIVERWELL Formerly Watford Health Campus, the Watford Riverwell project is transforming a large area of land to the south of Watford General Hospital and Watford Football Club. Through effective partnership, Watford Borough Council and Kier Property are delivering an exciting new destination and working closely with West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
