“We Do Tourism Responsibly” Any visit to South Africa’s tourist destinations is of paramount importance to the growth of tourism in the country and to create jobs. The South African tourism sector cares about tourist safety and wants to ensure that time spent in any of the nine provinces of South Africa, whether for business or leisure, is pleasant and memorable. While the “I Do Tourism” campaign seeks to ensure that all tourists engage in tourism activities as responsible travellers, there are a few measures that travellers need to consider: •

Open your mind to other cultures and traditions: This will enhance your experiences, earn you respect and ensure a warmer welcome from the local people.

Always be tolerant and respect diversity while you observe social and cultural traditions and practices. •

Respect human rights: Exploitation in any form undermines the fundamental aims of tourism. The sexual exploitation of children is a crime punishable in the destination and at the offender’s home country.

Help preserve the natural environment: We all have a role to play to protect

local fauna and flora by not purchasing products made from endangered plants or animals. Report all illegal hunting and poaching to law enforcement authorities. •

Obtain knowledge about local cultures: Learn as much as possible about your

destination and take time to understand the customs, norms and traditions of the residents. Avoid behaviour that could offend the local population. •

Use registered guides and operators: It is safe to travel throughout the country; however, certain areas would be best explored through the services of a registered Tour Operator or Tourist Guide. Details of registered tourist guides can be found at the various Provincial Tourism Offices.

Get reliable information: To enhance your travel experience, details of where to

go and things to do can be obtained at the various local Visitors Information Centres located throughout the country. •

Buy local: Support local communities by purchasing goods that are produced in South Africa.

Use water sparingly: Water is a scarce commodity in many parts of the country and should be used sparingly by all, including tourists.

Be safe: Be alert and make responsible decisions about your safety when travelling. Never hike alone, but rather join a hiking group or friends. Follow safety tips provided by registered places of accommodation and by local authorities.

Do make an informed decision about your travel plans and enjoy a safe holiday season!
