PAST CHAMPIONS NADAL, ZVEREV, DJOKOVIC IN 2ND-ROUND ACTION •

No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal, No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev and No. 11 seed Novak Djokovic have combined to win 12 of the last 13 Rome titles. They return to Foro Italico on Wednesday when the second round in Rome concludes. Nadal has won a record seven Rome titles, but none since 2013. The Internazionali BNL d’Italia is the only clay-court event where Nadal has made four consecutive appearances without a title. He begins his 2018 campaign on Centrale against Damir Dzumhur.

Zverev made history in Madrid on Sunday by becoming the first player to win a clay-court title without losing serve since stats started being tracked in 1991. Even Nadal, who owns a record 55 clay-court titles, has never held serve throughout a tournament on clay. Zverev faced one break point all week, the fewest en route to an ATP Masters 1000 title since 1991. Rome native Matteo Berrettini awaits Zverev, who won the first of his three ATP Masters 1000 titles in Rome last year.

Djokovic, a four-time Rome champion, continues his comeback against Nikoloz Basilashvili. In other marquee matches, Grigor Dimitrov turns 27 against Monte-Carlo finalist Kei Nishikori, Indian Wells champion Juan Martin del Potro meets #NextGenATP star Stefanos Tsitsipas and Madrid finalist Dominic Thiem takes on Italian No. 1 Fabio Fognini. Thiem beat Nadal in the 2017 Rome and 2018 Madrid quarter-finals. They could meet once again in the quarter-finals on Friday.

SHAPOVALOV SEEKS ANOTHER MAJOR MILESTONE IN ROME DEBUT •

Denis Shapovalov became the youngest quarter-finalist and semi-finalist in ATP Masters 1000 history at Montreal last August. He emerged as the youngest quarter-finalist and semi-finalist in tournament history at Madrid last week. With a win in Rome over No. 15 seed Tomas Berdych on Tuesday, Shapovalov would pass Milos Raonic in the ATP Rankings on 21 May and become the No. 1 Canadian. The 19-year-old defeated Raonic 6-4, 6-4 in the Madrid third round on 10 May.

Shapovalov, now ranked a career-high No. 29, is trying to join five fellow #NextGenATP players as the No. 1 player from his respective country: No. 3 Alexander Zverev (Germany), No. 32 Andrey Rublev (Russia), No. 43 Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece), No. 154 Casper Ruud (Norway) and No. 180 Hubert Hurkacz (Poland). Tsitsipas, 19, faces former #NextGenATP star Borna Coric in the first round on Tuesday. He is already the highest-ranked Greek player in ATP World Tour history.

The last six first-round and first four second-round matches comprise the schedule, with Italian wild cards Marco Cecchinato and Lorenzo Sonego seeking spots in the Round of 16. Through two days of main draw play, Italian men are 4-0 at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Cecchinato bids for the biggest win of his career against World No. 10 David Goffin. Sonego is coming off the biggest win of his career over World No. 27 Adrian Mannarino and meets Peter Gojowczyk on Tuesday.

4-TIME CHAMPION DJOKOVIC MEETS DOLGOPOLOV IN ROME 1ST ROUND •

No. 11 seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia kicks off his campaign for a fifth Internazionali BNL d’Italia championship when he squares off against Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov in the first round at Rome on Monday. Djokovic has a 42-7 win-loss record in Rome, claiming titles in 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2015, as well as runner-up finishes the last two years. Dolgopolov will have to turn around a daunting head-to-head deficit if he hopes to claim an upset win, as Djokovic has won all five of their previous meetings on the ATP World Tour. This is only Dolgopolov’s second match since the Australian Open, as he has struggled with a persistent wrist injury this year.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori has had a solid season since returning from his own wrist injury woes, and will meet Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the opening round on Monday. Nishikori kicked off the claycourt season with a bang, reaching the fourth ATP Masters 1000 final of his career in Monte-Carlo, before falling to 11-time champion Rafael Nadal. Nishikori has dropped his two matches since then, though, retiring against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Barcelona, and falling to Djokovic in Madrid. Meanwhile, Lopez will try to grasp a victory in Rome, which has been rare for him of late. Lopez made the quarter-finals in 2010 but has achieved only one match win at Rome in the last six years.

The night match on Centrale sees Italian No. 1 Fabio Fognini taking on Frenchman Gael Monfils in an intriguing opening-round encounter. Monfils made the semi-finals in his debut appearance in 2006, but has won only one main draw match in Rome since then, and has played the event only once in the last five years. As for Fognini, he is still trying to make the first Rome quarter-final of his career; he shocked defending champion and then-World No. 1 Andy Murray last year to reach the third round, but dropped his next match – to Alexander Zverev, who would go on to win the title.

Two Top 10 seeds are in action on Next Gen Arena on Monday, as No. 9 seed David Goffin of Belgium faces Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, and No. 10 seed Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain battles American Jared Donaldson. Additionally, Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund, who has made his Top 20 debut this week at a new career-high ranking of World No. 19, meets Tunisian qualifier Malek Jaziri. Both Edmund and Jaziri experienced their first-ever ATP World Tour singles finals at clay-court tournaments earlier this year – Edmund at Marrakech, and Jaziri at Istanbul.

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN ROME 1) Fantastic Field: The strongest ATP World Tour field of the season is in Rome for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Eighteen of the Top 20 players will compete, headlined by seven-time champion Rafael Nadal, four-time champion Novak Djokovic and defending champion Alexander Zverev. 2) El Rey del Clay: Nadal is 14-1 in matches and 30-2 in sets on clay this year with his 11th MonteCarlo and 11th Barcelona titles. Though he will fall to No. 2 in the ATP Rankings on 14 May, Nadal would start a sixth stint as World No. 1 on 21 May if he captures his eighth Rome championship. 3) Spaniard’s Standards: Nadal has won the Rome title a record seven times, but not since 2013. He lost in the quarter-finals in 2015, 2016 and 2017 after falling to Djokovic in the 2014 final. Rome is the only clay-court event where Nadal has made four consecutive appearances without a title. 4) Comeback Trail: Djokovic is 6-6 in 2018 and seeking his first quarter-final of the season as he continues his comeback from a right elbow injury. The former World No. 1 is responsible for 19% of Nadal’s losses on clay, earning three of seven clay-court victories over his Spanish rival in Rome. 5) Mastering 1000s: Zverev, the World No. 3, won ATP Masters 1000 titles in Rome and Montreal, then reached another final in Miami, all before his 21st birthday on 20 April. The #NextGenATP superstar defeated Djokovic for the Rome title and Roger Federer for the Montreal title in 2017. Zverev plays in his fourth ATP Masters 1000 final on 13 May, in Madrid against Dominic Thiem. 6) Next King of Clay: After Thiem beat Nadal in the 2017 Rome quarter-finals, the Spaniard swept his next 21 matches and 50 sets on clay. Thiem ended both streaks in the Madrid quarter-finals on 11 May and could meet Nadal again in the Rome quarter-finals on 18 May. Thiem (3) is one of three men with three wins over Nadal on clay, joining Djokovic (7) and Gaston Gaudio (3). 7) Wawrinka Returns: Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka returns to the tour this week for his first match since 22 February in Marseille. Wawrinka is 3-4 in 2018 as he continues his comeback from a left knee injury. He reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final at Rome in 2008. 8) No. 1 Contender: World No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro is 22-5 in 2018, highlighted by his first ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells, where he saved three championship points to defeat then-No. 1 Roger Federer. Del Potro seeks his first semi-final in Rome and first on clay since 2012 Madrid. 9) Bigger is Better: World No. 8 Kevin Anderson and No. 9 John Isner are at career-high rankings following stellar starts to their respective seasons. The 6-foot-8 Anderson reached his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final last week in Madrid after winning his fourth ATP title in New York. The 6foot-10 Isner defeated Del Potro and Zverev to capture his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Miami. 10) 40-Love: Bob and Mike Bryan, who turned 40 on 29 April, will become the oldest World No. 1s in ATP Doubles Rankings history (since 1976) if they win the Madrid title on 13 May. Otherwise, the Bryan brothers will have another shot at No. 1 in Rome, where they are four-time champions.
