Welcome to our new school year As mentioned last week in our “quickie” we have 5 new Kindergarten students and one new family. We warmly welcome Hugh and Hannah S and their son Roman to our school along with congratulating Sarah M, Ethan B, Eden S and Archie McD on graduating from our Connections group to ‘Big School”. Our enrolment numbers have meant that we change from 3 full time classes, back to 2. Miss Hanns has very kindly taken on the role of our K-2 teacher this year, and unfortunately for the Primary kids, I am back on the 3-6 class. Mrs Faulkner returns to us again this year but in a slightly different role as Release from face to face teacher, Librarian and Learning Support Teacher. Mrs Kemp and Mrs Isbester are supporting our students again in the classroom along with some assistance of Mrs Hodges. Mrs Horan, who will be with us in an different administrative role, will still continue to support us - however as she is also supporting 11 other small schools I’m sure that you will understand she is not able to be at our immediate beck and call, as she has been. Mr Horan remains in charge of keeping our grounds in immaculate condition and Fay will continue to keep our facilities in tip top shape. Contacting the school I’m sure that everyone is aware of the procedures that we have in place for contacting the school. As all of our staff have a direct responsibility for supporting the most important part of our school- our students - your children, you would understand that we can not always be available to take your phone calls or answer your message instantly. If you do wish to contact us you can certainly phone and leave a message and we will attempt to get back to you during a break. You can also email [email protected] if you wish to pass on some information. I do realise that in our situation we do have an opportunity to get to know our school community quite well, but we hope that this does not compromise our roles as professionals. In saying that respecting the staff by giving privacy and only contacting via school, waiting to be invited into a classrooms etc would be very much appreciated. If you do have a concern or issue regarding our school, I strongly urge you to speak directly to the person involved first. In most cases this will lead to a resolution. If you are not satisfied then please contact the school office for support in trying to resolve your concern. Notes Home Our regular correspondence will be via this fortnightly newsletter. You can request an emailed version and we also post it online to our Skoolbag app for you to access. We will also send home notes on various occasions, so it might be worth setting up a routine to regularly check your child’s bag for any notes from us. It would also be appreciated if any notes back to us at school are addressed to the person concerned and that if you are sending in money to use a sealed envelope or sandwich bag with your child’s name, the amount enclosed and the purpose clearly written on the outside. Skoolbag is our regular means of communicating changes of routine to our school community and you can also submit absence notes electronically. This year we are also going to investigate permission notes being distributed and submitted this way as well. You can find the free app at both the apple and android stores by searching Skoolbag Bedgerebong (yes with an e). Ours has our yellow school tree badge as the icon. For the moment you can also find copies of all notes sent home on our school website www.bedgerebonp.schools.nsw.edu.au

Changes to routine/ phone messages after 2pm In order to ensure we look after the safety and welfare of the kids, particularly after a long day at school we ask that any changes to regular routines come to us in the form of a note. Quite often little ones can overhear conversations or misread situations and think that they are going somewhere with someone else, or may even decide to take themselves off to a friend’s place for the afternoon. This can lead to kids being left behind, and as much as we would love to be able to stay and supervise them, we all have after work commitments and may not be able to stay at school and watch them., not to mention the stress it can cause a child if they expect to get picked up and no one arrives. To address this we will always put the children onto their regular bus in the afternoon UNLESS we have a note from home stating otherwise. Absences from school A reminder that it is a requirement that any absence from school be supported by a note detailing the absence and student absences of 3 days or more require a medical certificate to accompany the note. If you need to pick your child up early or are bringing them in after school has started, please visit the office to see Mrs Horan to register the details. Mrs Horan will assist you in collecting or delivering your child to or from the classroom. School fees/resources At Bedgerabong School we do not charge school fees, all we ask is that the students have a renewed supply of the following - a glue stick and an eraser. This is all we ask. You can purchase them from our school office ($2 per glue stick and 50c per eraser) Children are more than welcome to bring their own supplies, such as coloured pencils, texts etc in a manageable size pencil case. We would also ask that each child have a home reading bag / library bag. Tootie Fruity Will resume this Wednesday. Tootie Fruity is our weekly Kitchen-Garden program where the children will be offered instruction in developing cooking skills and supported in developing an understanding of good nutrition and culinary practices. For this program we ask for an upfront payment for the term of $50 per FAMILY (not student) or if you’d prefer to pay weekly the cost is $8 per FAMILY. The menus are very kid friendly and the serving sizes are ample, however if your child is a little fussy or an enormous eater you may elect to pack something different or extra in their lunchbox each Wednesday. Pay on line Bedgerabong Public School now has available a Pay on line facility. You just need a credit card and go onto our web page www.bedgerebon-p.schools.nsw.edu.au and click on Make a payment enter in the child’s name and DOB and put what you are paying for in the reference. If you are paying for tootie fruity just use the eldest child as the child’s name and DOB. Crunch and Sip Our daily Crunch and Sip program has been in place for a number of years now and it's been wonderful to have so many families supporting it. It is simple, we ask that each weekday every student brings some fresh fruit or vegetable cut into small pieces to have at the start of each school day.

Vehicles in the school grounds In the interests of safety of our students, your children, we have continued to avoid having unnecessary vehicles in school grounds. The buses will continue to drop off and pick up the children outside the school gates and the gates will be closed for the day. It would be appreciated if visitors to our school utilised the areas either side of Golding Avenue (the road leading to the school) when parking or dropping off/picking up students and not driving in and out of the school grounds. Be very aware of the bus zone signs out there. You will also notice that a new bus turning area was constructed by the Council during the holidays so please avoid parking on it especially in the mornings and afternoons when the busses would be arriving and leaving. Thank you. Community Connections Community Connections will continue again this year each Thursday morning from 9.30am-11am. Given that we have a reduction in staff we are unable to have Miss Hanns available to run the playgroup program as she has in the past, however we are able to prepare sessions for our playgroup to be able to run themselves. For pour first session this Thursday we can catch up with any playgroup regulars and discuss needs and strategies. Small schools swimming carnival Our small schools swimming carnival will be held at the Forbes Pool this Friday- Feb 9th. We start at 9.15am so it would be appropriate to arrive just prior to 9am, unless your child would like a warm swim, then a bit earlier might be good. We usually finish by about 2.30pm. We join together with Bogan Gate, Caragabal, Eugowra and Quandialla schools for this event. This is a day for every child to participate so we expect that all of our students will attend. Mums and dads are also encouraged to stay and spend some time supporting the kids and maybe catching up with other mums and dads. At some stage we will require some parental assistance in timekeeping, so please be aware of this. We also have a 4 x 50m parent/teacher race relay, so feel free to bring your togs. I have a supply of green and gold zinc for our kids, and of course the children are required to wear their sports uniform over their swimmers coming into and leaving the poolincluding sunscreen and a hat! K-2 News Week 1 of Term 1 2018 is done and dusted. It was so good to see all of the smiling faces again along with our five new ones. With that I would like to extend a big welcome to Ethan, Archie, Roman, Eden and Sarah our kindergarten class for 2018. Week 1 in k-2 consisted mainly of revision of our fish philosophy, our class rules and expectations and our classroom routines. We all had the chance to hear about one another’s holiday adventures. We sat in a big circle and shared all of our great experiences over the past 6 weeks. In k-2 all students have a Home Reading folder. In this folder there is a home reading book and a classroom text. Please ensure your child does daily reading. Along with home reading every student will also have a homework book with 1 page of homework to be completed and returned on Fridays. Many students will also have a sight word folder which contains their words and checklist. Please try and test your child each night with the words found in their folder. Last but not least Kindergarten students will also find their Jolly Phonic sound books. We will cover 2-3 sounds per week in class. The book is for parents to use as revision at home. Any questions don’t hesitate to contact me at school. Miss Hanns Being fair shows you care – FISH for life

Big class news A great start to the year for the Upper Division or “Big Class” last week, with the kids being very supportive easing me back into the classroom. We have a group of 20 year 3-6 in our class and so far it’s been very encouraging seeing everyone get along so well and being so supportive of each other. We have spoken of class requirements - each student requires a glue stick and an eraser and a bag for home readers, especially if they are using school books for home reading. iPads should be at school each day and have at least 50% charge. At this stage the only mandatory homework for our class is home reading and it’s expected that everyone reads each night Monday - Friday and has their home reading record book signed and at school each school day. Years 3-4 for should be reading for at least 15 minutes each night and years 5-6 should be reading for 30mins each time. We have started our times tables mastery program called HOOTTS, we actually had 7 successful attempts at mastering the first times tables last week, making me and all of the kids very proud. The kids should also be working hard at home practicing their times tables. All of the children were asked to have their school workbooks covered by today and hopefully that’s been done. If you have had any issues in regards to covering books please feel free to contact me at school to discuss. Looking forward to an exciting year with the Big Class and bringing you lots of exciting things the kids get up to. Mr Faulkner Library This year library borrowing will once again take place on Tuesdays. As we now have access to our library room, books will be borrowed during class time. A limit of 3 books per child will be enforced and books can be borrowed for up to two weeks at a time. Students won’t be allowed to borrow more books if they have overdue library books. Please ensure your child brings their library bag on Tuesday and please be aware that a bag is a requirement for borrowing. If you have any questions about borrowing or the library please feel free to contact me at school. Mrs Faulkner
